Memorial services coordinated by Burns Mortuary of Hermiston, Oregon, will be held at the LDS Church in Hermiston on April 10, 2006. Harry was the son of Harry Emanuel Hansen and Mable Grace (Mitchell) Hansen, who were married 14 Oct 1915 at the Methodist Church in Harlan, Shelby Co., Iowa. Mable died in 1923 and for two years Harry Junior was raised by his Danish paternal grandparents in Harlan, Iowa. In 1925, his father married Mildred Ester Holtz at Shelby Co., Iowa. On 6 Dec 1928, daughter Lois Marie Hansen was born at Shelby, Shelby Co., Iowa. She later married Edward Hanske. In 1932, Mildred died. Lois was adopted by her maternal grandparents, with whom Harry Junior also lived for a year. In 1933, his father married Pearl Pauline (Petersen) Larson on 4 Aug 1933 at Avoca, Pottawatomie Co., IA. Pearl's son Laurence Timm Larsen (b. 23 Dec 1924 Council Bluffs) joined the family, and in 1934 son Michael Joseph "Joe" Hansen was born (Council Bluffs). The family resided in Council Bluffs in 1938 when Harry Junior graduated from high school, and through Harry Emanuel's death in 1950, Timm's death in 1987, and Pearl's death in 1996. Harry Junior served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps, and was stationed for a time in Pendleton, Oregon, where he met his future wife, Zelma Maurine Sutton, at a military base dance. She reminded him of his mother, and during their first dance, he declared that he had decided to marry her. On 18 Feb 1945, they were married at Pendleton, Umatilla Co., OR. Maurine was the daughter of Lester Carlyle Sutton and Stella May (Perkins) Sutton, who resided near Stanfield, OR. Harry and Maurine were married for more than 61 years. Harry earned his living as an electrician with Boeing Company and (briefly) with Lockheed Aircraft, and retired in 1982. During the Cold War, he helped build missile silos in North Dakota. His hobbies were raising and riding horses and learning about his ancestors through genealogy. The family resided in Washington, Oregon, and California. In 1973, they purchased a small farm outside of Stanfield, Oregon where Maurine's paternal grandparents had once resided. There Maurine continues to reside, next door to her son Wendell and youngest brother, Aaron. She has the support of hundreds of family members and friends to carry her safely through this difficult time. Messages of sympathy and support are welcome. Harry and Maurine had three children: * Carol Grace Hansen Hollingsworth Devine, b. 20 May 1949, Seattle, King Co., WA, now residing at West Richland, WA. * Wendell Harry Hansen, b. 10 June 1951, Seattle, King Co., WA, now residing near Stanfield, OR. * Jeffrey Lyle "Jeff" Hansen, b. 16 Jul 1967, Bellevue, King Co., WA, now residing at Hermiston, OR. Harry lived to see his five grandchildren grow to adulthood, and to enjoy the infancy of two of his three great grandsons. Following a prolonged battle with failing health, Harry died of heart failure while holding the hand of his wife, and suffered no pain. The family acknowledges with deep appreciation the tremendous support of the United States Veteran's Administration hospitals in Portland and Walla Walla through the final years of Dad's life. To all those who helped our father and mother research Dad's ancestral line, we extend our sincere thanks. Carol and Wendell will continue to advance the research as life permits. In 1959, the family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and Harry and Maurine became avid genealogists. Harry renewed contact with a multitude of distant relatives and collected invaluable genealogical information now of great assistance to Hansen, Mitchell, Sorensen and Ferguson researchers in Iowa and across the United States. His daughter, Carol, can be reached by email at carol.devine2@verizon.net for further information.
