She graduated from Harlan High School in 1944. Her husband Byron James Smith preceded her in death in 1993. She worked as a bookkeeper for 25 years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Narcissus Chapter #269. She enjoyed playing bridge, knitting and sewing, and spoiling her great grandchildren. She organized and was president of the Residents Council of the Redmond Retirement Manor, Redmond, WA. She was proud of her Danish heritage and was a strong leader. One of her goals was to celebrate her 80th birthday and to witness her youngest great grandson's third birthday - both of which she achieved. She leaves her daughter, Anna Schwartz, of Plymouth, MN; her son, Bill Cary, of Omaha, NE; her brother, Jack Ingraham, of Spencer, IA; 16 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Christopher Reeve Foundation, 636 Morris Turnpike, Suite 3A, Short Hills, New Jersey 07078. He was preceded in death by his son, Jesse Arrick in 1985; one sister; and one brother. Mattie Johnson died Saturday, April 15th at the Exira Care Center. Survivors include 4 children, Irene Schmidt of Audubon, Ruby Welna of Omaha, Helen Smith (Thayer) of Belfair, WA and Franklin Johnson (Norma) of Omaha; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; 1 sister-in-law, Ellen Rasmussen of Audubon. Johnson, 108, of Exira, were conducted April 19, at the Exira Lutheran Church, with Pastor Bill Embree officiating. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. Casket bearers were her grandchildren: Gary Welna, Steve Johnson, Greg Johnson, Wendell Schmidt, Jerry Schmidt, Lynnette Spetman, Terri Nofsinger, Vicki Halley, Debbie Thomas, Kandi Berg and Kim Smith. Mattie Christina Johnson, the daughter of Rasmus and Christina Peterson Rasmussen, was born Oct. 14, 1897, on her parents’ farm in Shelby County near Jacksonville and died April 15, 2006, at the Exira Care Center. Mattie was baptized in 1899 and confirmed in 1911 at Bethany Lutheran Church northeast of Kimballton. She attended rural Audubon County School near Kimballton, then took sewing classes. She then helped other families. On Aug. 30, 1920, she was united in marriage to Carl C. Johnson in Des Moines. They farmed in Shelby, Carroll and Audubon counties. In 1938, they purchased a farm south of Exira. They raised grain, hogs and cattle. They farmed until they retired in 1951. They vacationed in California, then spent the winters in Texas. They lived on an acreage north of Exira, moved back to the farm, then moved to Audubon in 1980. Carl died on Aug. 14, 1983. Mattie moved to Omaha, NE, where she lived in her own apartment for several years, then lived with her daughter, Ruby for several years. In February of 2003, she moved to the Exira Care Center in Exira. Mattie was a member of the Exira Lutheran Church. One of the highlights of her life was when she had a ride on a motorcycle with her grandson, Gary, when she was 106 years old. Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were her sons-in-law: Lester J. Welna and Victor Schmidt; her parents; her brothers and sisters: Chris Rasmussen, Elmer and Anna Rasmussen, Minnie and Chris Lund, George and Beulah Rasmussen, Esther and Pete Hjuler, Clara and George, Sr. Oakley, Arthur and Verlene Rasmussen, Raymond Rasmussen and Mabel Rasmussen. Gross Thomas Joseph Gross, the son of Norbert and Dolores (Schnuettgen) Gross, was born on February 4, 1940, in Buck Grove, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Buck Grove. Tom was confirmed at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance and attended St. Paul's Catholic School graduating with the class of 1958. After high school graduation, he worked for Farm Best Pork Plant in Denison. He then joined the Iowa National Guard and served his country until his honorable discharge in November of 1978. He also farmed with his brother Jim for over 30 years. During that time, Tom also operated Gross Trucking. He worked construction and drove a truck until his retirement in 2005 . . . living in Harlan with his mother. Tom was a member of the Knight's of Columbus in Denison and later became a 4th Degree member of the Luke E. Hart General Assembly of Defiance and its Chalice Club. He was also a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance and the American Legion Post No. 707 of Defiance and Westphalia, Iowa, where he served proudly in the firing line for the honor guard for countless military rites. He enjoyed tractor pulling, restoring antique engines and, of course, his "Buggy." He especially enjoyed preparing barbeque for his friends and family as well as playing cards. Thomas died on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at home in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of sixty-six years, two months and seven days. He was preceded in death by his father, Norbert and his brother, Samuel. Survivors include his mother, Dolores Gross of Harlan, Iowa; his brothers and sisters: James Gross and his wife, Norma of Manilla, Iowa; Marcelleen and her husband, Fred Youngman of Dale, Texas; Mary Jane Brody of Omaha, Nebraska; Randall Gross and his wife, Virginia of Harvard, Illinois; Virginia and her husband, Paul Kruse of Harlan, Iowa; Lorie and her husband, Scott Bandow of Manilla, Iowa; twenty-three nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and many friends.
