McKeighan was born September 6, 1912, the son of Clyde and Melinda Tague McKeighan. He died Friday, November 10, 2000, surrounded by family, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 88. Earl was born on a farm near Panama, Iowa. He earned his diploma at Tenant High School, where he excelled in his studies and was well known for his ability as a baseball pitcher on the school’s team. As he pursued his occupation to the car business years later, he became certified as a Master Mechanic with General Motors in Lansing, Michigan. He met his sweetheart, Dorothy Kaufmann, when he worked on her mother’s farm near Westphalia, Iowa. They were united in marriage on Earl’s twenty-sixth birthday, September 6, 1938, at St. Boniface Church in Westphalia, and she survives. He and Dorothy were blessed with the birth of four daughters and a son. Combining his outgoing nature with keen business skills, Earl ran Sparky’s Standard Station in Harlan, Iowa until January 1940, when he and Dorothy moved to Denison with their first child, Anna Leona. Earl then operated McKeighan’s Standard Service Station at Main and Highway 30 until 1949. At that time, he purchased Rademacher Motors on South Main in Denison, later changing its name to B & M Motors (Bockelmann and McKeighan). Earl and partner Lou eventually moved the Oldsmobile and Cadillac dealership to Highway 30, near 20th Street, where Earl operated B & M until he sold it in 1973. Trying his hand at retirement, he grew weary of it a short time later and accepted the position of Parts Manager at the local Chevrolet dealership. Upon leaving the car business, he served as Deputy Sheriff in Crawford County. Earl was an active member of his community. He served on the Denison City Council, helping spearhead the drive for installation of storm sewers along Highway 30. He was organizer and treasurer of the local March of Dimes during the 1950's, as well as founder and treasurer of the Denison Gun club. His membership in the Knights of Columbus saw him serve as the group’s long-time treasurer. Earl was also a multiple gallon blood donor with the American Red Cross. In his leisure time, he was an avid bowler with the B & M Motors and Knights of Columbus teams, participating in several state tournaments. Earl enjoyed gardening with his wife of 62 years as well as fishing, hunting, and helping family and friends with a variety of projects. His orchard kept family, neighbors, and friends well supplied with various fruits and nuts. Being involved in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren is what Earl would list as life’s greatest accomplishment. Whether teaching them to bait a hook, throw a baseball or softball, reading them a favorite story, or showing them how to fix something, he gently and patiently helped them to learn. Playing pool or a card game with them or attending one of their many activities gave him untold pleasure. He was all anyone could ask for in a father or grandpa, passing on to future generations his philosophy that “It’s A Wonderful Life!” Earl was preceded in death by his parents, sister Virginia, brother Dale, half-sister Jean, son John, and daughter Linda. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, three daughters, Ann Lee of Sarasota, Florida; Mary Sanghvi and husband Ajit of Frederick, Maryland; Teresa Clark and husband Jim of Mt.
