The notes were posted by Ann McFarland, Suzette, and Val regarding a Barber family. I have been collecting information about the Barber family in Union Co. PA. I would be glad to email entries I've found to you. Ann, you asked about James Barber's father being a Pres minister. I don't know if his father was Samuel Barber but there is a reference to a Rev Samuel Barber of Mifflinburg, Union, PA in Union County Pennsylvania 1865-1875 by Mary Belle Lontz (1966). There are many other references to the Barber family as well. She lists records from a number of different Union Co PA sources. Adam Smith's, Rev War Soldier, of Northumberland/Union Co PA, dtr Anna Barbara Smith bn 1776 m. Michael Maize bn ca 1770. Adam had a son and grandson Michael. I believe the grandson Michael is the father of Noah Smith bn in Union Co in 1824/5. Noah appears in the Henry Barber household in the 1850 Stehpenson County Illinios Census. Does your James Barber have a brother Henry who settled in Stephenson County Illinois? Do you know of any connection between the Barber's and Smiths other than Michael Maize marrying Adam Smith's dtr. Anna Barbara bn 1776 and the Maize's and Barbers marrying? I believe the Mary/Marie Maize bn 1805 that Suzette and Val wrote of may be a dtr of Michael Maize bn ca 1770 and Anna Barbara Smith bn 1776. I hope I can be of help, or at least have something of interest to you. Marie Smith Peer

Tri-Center sophomore Elyse Miller, 16, was pronounced dead at the scene after a salvaged junk car slid from the semi-trailer carrying it and crashed into her car. Pottawattamie County Chief Deputy Sheriff Jim Matthai said investigators are examining all possibilities but so far, it appears that a broken chain allowed the junk cars to come free. "There were some broken links at the scene," he said. "So we think we have an idea, but we're still investigating all possibilities." Miller's passenger, B.J. Pauley, 16, of Neola remains in serious condition at NHS University Hospital in Omaha, where he was taken by helicopter ambulance after the crash. The collision occurred at 8:15 a.m. on Highway 191, about a mile north of Neola. Miller was driving her Dodge Dynasty north and the semi-trailer, driven by Justin Johannsen, 22, of Denison was driving south. Reports indicate that at the moment the two vehicles were next to each other, a junked car came loose and slammed into Miller's car which spun into a nearby, steep ditch. She was killed on impact. The semi-trailer also turned over into the ditch, a matter that investigators are looking into. Johannsen was taken to Alegent Health Mercy Hospital where he was treated and released for minor injuries. "This was a terrible thing for those kids," Matthai said. "There was nothing she could do. They were in the wrong place at the wrong time." Matthai said the department is in the process of talking to everyone that was involved in the incident, including the trucking company Johannsen works for, Diamond F Transportation of Denison. "They've been cooperative," he said. "We've talked with them and they've answered all of our questions. We're still investigating the matter." Once the investigation is complete, all of the evidence will be turned over to the Pottawattamie County Attorney's office for review of whether any violations were committed. The funeral for Miller is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Tri-Center High School. A memorial scholarship fund has been set up in Miller's name. Wednesday's stories Persia teen killed in crash with semi carrying junk cars NEOLA - Like many others her age, Tri-Center High School sophomore Elyse Miller was on her way to school at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday. Unfortunately, she didn't make it that far. Miller, 16, of Persia was killed in a car crash after a junked vehicle became detached from the semi-trailer carrying it and landed on Miller's car. Investigators believe she was killed on impact. Her passenger, sophomore B.J. Pauley, 16, of Neola was taken to NHS University Hospital in Omaha by helicopter ambulance. He was upgraded to serious condition, according to hospital spokesperson Kelly Grinnell. Tri-Center Superintendent Brett A. Nanninga said classes will resume as normal and the the school's crisis counseling team will be available to assist students, faculty and community members today. "This hit us in the morning just as school started," he said. "So it was pretty open until lunchtime and then we tried to get back to some kind of normalcy." The crash occurred at 8:15 a.m. about one mile north of Neola on Highway 191. The front half of Miller's car was torn open, and the semi-trailer rolled into a ditch where it turned over. Debris from crushed cars littered the side of the road as Pottawattamie County deputies, and Minden, Neola and Underwood fire and rescue crews used the jaws of life to extricate Miller from her car. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner. The driver of the semi-trailer, Justin R. Johannsen, 22, of Denison, was taken by the Minden rescue squad to Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs. He was treated and released for minor injuries. Nanninga said he arrived at the scene shortly after rescue crews. He said he heard some of the details of the accident come over the scanner and because of the time, was worried that one of his students could be involved. When he and the school's head custodian arrived on the scene, his fears were confirmed. "They were friends," he said. "She had just taken him home quickly to get some things, and they were on their way back to school." Nanninga said he had watched Miller grow up and that she was a positive influence in the school. She was involved in athletics, music, drill team and was a teacher's aide at the elementary school. "She had an outgoing personality," he said. "She was a good student, everything you can ask for in someone her age." In addition to her other activities, she had been a carrier for The Daily Nonpareil. Nanninga said he met Miller's father back at school. "He didn't know," he said. "He came into the office and asked, 'How's my daughter?' I didn't know how to tell him. What do you say?" The Tri-Center boys' basketball team was scheduled to play Griswold High School Tuesday night, but because of the news of Miller's death and Pauley's injuries, the game was canceled. "You tend to think that teenagers will get into troublesome spots occasionally," Nanninga said. "But these were two innocent victims of circumstance." Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker said the department is conducting a full investigation into the crash. It is unknown whether or not criminal charges will be brought up. "We'll have to see what we find in the course of the investigation," he said. ©Daily Nonpareil 2003 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Accident Kills Iowa Teen, Injures Another Both Teens Tri-Center Students POSTED: 5:06 p.m. CST February 4, 2003 UPDATED: 11:26 a.m. CST February 6, 2003 NEOLA, Iowa -- An accident near Neola, Iowa, killed one high school student and critically injured another student Tuesday morning. I'm trying to type the bios from the Past and Present of Shelby County Iowa, pub. 1915, and get them loaded to the USGenWeb page for Shelby Co. There is a bio for Carl LAGE which includes information about the SCHNOOR family. I'll post it here below and then send it to the site owner to post at the Shelby Co. site too: Page 1105. CARL LAGE. One of the enterprising businessmen of Harlan, Iowa, is Carl LAGE, who has been identified with the business interests of this city for the past twenty years. Like many of the successful businessmen of harlan, he is of German birth and the habits of thrift and industry for which the Germans are known wherever they settle in this country has made him one of the most substantial men of the city. He is strictly a self-made man and has attained his present success solely through his own unaided efforts. His career is a striking example of the opportunities which this country offers to enterprising men of foreign birth. CARL LAGE, a member of the firm of HANSEN & LAGE, was born in Schoenberg, Germany, September 26, 1860. He is the son of Hans and Anna (KLINDT) LAGE, both of whom spent all of their lives in the land of their birth. His father was born in 1821 and died in 1906, and his mother was born in 1822 and died in 1886. His father was a weaver in Germany and followed that occupation until he retired in 1890. Five children were born to Hans LAGE and wife: Thomas, Hans, William, Anna and Carl. The education of Carl LAGE was received in his native land and after leaving school he learned the glazing trade and followed that until he came to America at the age of twenty. Many of his countrymen had preceded him to this county, and when he arrived at Avoca, Iowa, April 2, 1880, he found many of them here to welcome him. He worked as a farm hand near Avoca for five years, after which he located at Omaha, Nebraska. He followed teaming in that city for about nine months, and then came to Shelby County, Iowa, and located in Fairview Township with his brother, Thomas. The two brothers rented a farm of one hundred eighty acres and farmed it until 1891. In that year, Carl LAGE left the farm, never to return. He went to Corley, Iowa, and clerked in a general mercantile store there for three years. In the winter of 1894, he returned to Germany and visited his parents and relatives for a few months, and in the spring of the same year, he returned to Iowa and located at Harlan, where he found employment in the general merchandise store of C. SCHOUBE. The following year, Mr. LAGE became a member of the firm of C. SCHOUBE & Company, and this firm continued in business under this name until 1898 when Mr. SCHOUBE died. The firm was then recognized under the name of Hansen, Lage, Nieman & Company and continued to do business under the new name until 1908, Mr. NIEMAN having died in 1907. The firm was then reorganized under the name of Hansen & Lage, and has continued to do business under this name since that time. They carry a general line of merchandise and they have their share of the patronage of the county seat and the surrounding community. The store is well stocked with goods, and by careful management has built up a business which speaks well for their enterprise. Mr. LAGE was married October 2, 1897, to Margaret SCHNOOR, the daughter of George SCHNOOR and wife, and to this union two children have been born, Hugo and Emil, both of whom are single and living at home with their parents. Mrs. Lage's parents were both natives of Germany and never left the land of their birth. Both are now deceased. Five children were born to George SCHNOOR and wife: Jacob, John, Ferdinand, Margaret and one who is deceased. Mr. LAGE is a member of the German Lutheran Church, as is his wife and children. He is also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Modern Woodmen of America, and the Brotherhood of American Yeomen. Politically, he has been identified with the Republican party and has served as councilman in his city. He is deeply interested in the welfare of his city and such measures as he deems advantageous for its welfare find in him a ready and enthusiastic supporter. Mr. LAGE and his family are prominent in the society of Harlan and their home is a hospitable center where their many friends delight to meet. (end) I hope this is helpful to you. Hello list, Another SCHNOOR relative is the focus of our investigation. FERDINAND SCHNOOR (b. 1865) was the brother of the two women who married into the LAGE family. He married (perhaps in Shelby County as well--don't know name of wife) and fathered two children in Shelby County, before moving to Alberta, Canada in 1907. His two children were HERBERT SCHNOOR, born either 1902 or 1904 (conflicts, here), and MINNA SCHNOOR, born in the fall of 1906. We'd love to find the marriage record/birth/baptismal records for these people. We believe they were Lutheran--perhaps there was a Lutheran church in Harlan that served these families? Thank you, once again. Linda Schnoor
Hello list, I've separated my two messages. The other great, great aunt we are researching is MARGARETHE SCHNOOR. She married CARL LAGE on October 2, 1897. I believe in Shelby County, again not sure. Would love to see if the marriage appeared in a newspaper at the time. Margarethe and Carl had two sons named Emil and Hugo. In 1920 the family is living in Harlan, on College Road. I believe Carl might still have been running his general merchandise store by the name of Hansen and Lage. Does anyone have any information on this store? Anyway, I don't know if Carl died between 1920 and 1930, but, Margarethe and her two sons move to California--to Oakland, specifically, in Alameda County. We have many theories--the business didn't work out, so they moved to California. Perhaps Carl died and the two sons decided to strike out for new opportunities in California. Their eldest son EMIL LAGE was (in the 1930 census) an electrical engineer. How interesting. HUGO SCHNOOR, it was noted, was a veteran of WWI. I haven't looked into any of those records yet. I guess we would like to see if there are any marriage records not only for MARGARETHE SCHNOOR/CARL LAGE, but maybe also for EMIL LAGE and HUGO LAGE. Can anyone provide suggestions for us? Thank you. Linda Schnoor, Springfield, Virginia (These two women are our great-grandfather's sisters, all immigrants from Schleswig/Holstein, Germany)
Hello list, I have found out more about the LAGE/SCHNOOR families we are researching. Two immigrants with the surname LAGE married into our family--actually marrying two SCHNOOR sisters. CAECILIA ("Celia") SCHNOOR married THOMAS LAGE in 1883. In Shelby County somewhere, we think. Would love to find a record of that, for starters. We know that she still lived in 1930, appearing in the Federal Census. She is 73 years old. Living on their family farm with 77 year old Thomas and their two sons. We don't know when Celia or Thomas died, but would love to find out the date and find obituaries for both of them. Any ideas? We would also like to find obituaries for their sons CARL LAGE and WILLIAM LAGE. CARL H. died in April of 1969, in Harlan. This from SSDI. WILLIAM died in August of 1983, also in Harlan. Is there anyone who can help us locate obituaries or give us any more ideas as to how to proceed from here. We've come a long way since a few years ago, but it has been "slow go" because I'm working on too many families at once, in all honesty! Thank you all. Linda Schnoor Springfield, Virginia
