He was the oldest son of Andrew Wilson Campbell and Lucy Reed Foster. Together, Dorcas and Jonathan raised seven children in Blue Grass, Iowa. After their fouth child was born, they became the leaders of the Andrew W. Campbell Clan when Andrew died in 1853 on the Oregon-California Trail while taking Jonathan's younger sister, Mary Campbell McCloud, to her husband Ross McCloud in the gold fields in Siskiyou County, California. Dorcas was born 21 Sept. 1826 in Wayne County, Pennsylvania.
