"Dr. James McCortney, a graduate of the Western Reserve Medical college in 1853, was admitted to membership in the Scott County Medical society early in 1857, having come to Davenport the preceding fall. Born in Pennsylvania, September 8, 1825, he died in Chicago on the anniversary of his birth, 1904. Dr. McCortney was for many years the principal Catholic physician of the city and enjoyed an extensive practice, which he relinquished, owing to failing health, only a few months before his death. He was one of the surgeons attending the prisoners on the island during the war and later held the office of coroner for an extended period.
