Rawley, for peddling jewelry, without license, was fined $15 and costs. Jan 11, 1872 Justice's Court. Willie Webb, a young lad, was up before Justice Thorington, on the charge of stealing several and sundry things from the store of Chas. E. Daly. The Justice had compassion on him and sent Willie to the Reform School. Jan 13, 1872 The Courts Justices Court-The trial of the young lads, Frank Hand and Billy Huerling, for stealing an overcoat from A.W. Vanderveer, W.H. Lundy, of Rock Island, bought the coat. In progress before Justice Thorington, as we go to press. Police Court. Mollie Hill, or Mollie Wilson, which you please, a notorious person of the female persuasion, taken up yesterday for being drunk and disorderly, was up before Justice Peters. Case is in progress as we go to press. Jan 14, 1872 A Chawing Business. James Horath and John Wilhelmson got into a row today. James got drunk, and they had a squabble. Horath got Wilhelmson's finger between his teeth, and chawed it unmercifully-so badly that it is feared he will lose it. Wilhelmson this afternoon swore out a warrant before Justice Thorington, placed it in the hands of Constable Wunderlich, and now, perhaps Horath is in limbo. Wilhelmson is a butcher-firm of Wilhemson & Nargang. Horath was formerly a resident of this city, but now lives in Rock Island. Police Court. Chas. Bancroft was arrested this morning for vagrancy, lying about in the streets, without any visible lawful means of support. Justice Peters fined him $5 and costs, which being unable to pay, he was sent up. Have you been able to get more information? One source might be an obituary - sometimes the newspaper obituaries were quite complete. I did a quick search and found your people in the 1880 census (the names were quite mangled as you mentioned). Also, the Porter County, IN GenWeb site shows a Marcus Breiholtz (note spelling) in a 1930 census index as in Morgan Twp, Page 133B. I don't have much on the Claussen family but do have considerable information on the Rostermund family - Peter Jacob Claussen's wife was Anna Christina Rostermund. Davenport Democrat Davenport, Scott, Iowa Jan 2, 1872 Police Court Richard Roe got drunk and it cost him five dollars. He could have done it for half the money, but the policeman interfered. Richard was well dressed. James Riley was a drunk and disorderly, and drew on his banker for the usual fine and costs, and hunted up a quiet place to sober off in. Tom Gillen started a tramping dry goods house without any license except his own word that he was a "Chicago Sufferer." He couldn't stand $15 and costs , so went to jail.Jan 5, 1872 Justice court. Heran Lorenz, the young man of 16, who robbed his employer, Mr. McCullough of merchant tailoring goods, and sold them at ruinous rates about this city and Rock Island, has been adjudicated into the Reform School. The peculations amounted to about $300, according to his own admissions. He will have to wait several years for a vacancy in the said school, unless it is enlarged. Jan. 6, 1872 Police Court Patrick Heeney was prosecuted by Bridget Higgins, inasmuch as he was turbulent, and wickedly demonstrated in the use of threats, profane language, maliciously attributing defendants existence to quadrupedal origin; for which a fine of $4 and costs was righteously assessed Jan 8, 1872 Justice Court Frank Hand, Charley Hand and Billy Herling are up before Justice Thorington, on the charge of petit larceny. It seems these young gents are in the habit of watching their opportunity and stealing light articles left in halls and on counters in stores where a strict watch is not kept. Two of these chaps robbed Mrs. Stacey on Fourth street, west of Hoyt's music store and the other is supposed to be the one that cleaned little Jimmy Doyle out, of the means he robbed Mr. Seamans little son of. They have parents in this community who are no better than they should be; and it is to be hoped these half grown boys will be dealt with, and the second hand store that is in the habit of trading with these young scamps. The trial comes of at 4 o'clock this afternoon. Police Court. Patrick Higgins disturbed the public peace and quiet of this moral town in general and Patrick Henry in particular, three dollars worth and costs. My husband reads "Lost Treasure" magazine and I was leafing through some old ones (don't ask me why) with items on Iowa. The Sep. 2000 issue had the following item pertaining to Scott Co: "Madman's Castle" by Anthony J. Pallante. To say that Dr. Henry Schumacher of the tiny village of Walcott west of Davenport was a tad unusual is tantamount to stating that the Rocky Mountains are not quite flat. For one thing, Schumacher took the idea that a man's home ought to be his castle quite literally. The wood frame house he had erected in 1905 and covered with imitation stone was an exact replica of a Norman stronghold. In his basement dungeon, astonished visitors found plaster of Paris skeletons impaled on long poles and outlined in phosphorescent paint. To indulge his passion for astronomy, Schumacher spent a small fortune erecting an observatory adjacent to his castle- but then Schumacher always seemed to have plenty of money. When he died in 1934, Schumacher's heirs found but little of his ready cash. What they did find and promptly sold at public auction were "rare guns, swords used in wars in various countries, rare coins, Confederate currency, spinning wheels, and other relics...." His collection of old newspapers, already antique in 1934, was unfortunately burned in a huge bonfire. But treasure seekers should take heart-if a man like Henry Schumacher didn't bury a cache or two somewhere, it is hard to imagine that anyone did. Anyone know any more about this guy? Or related? Or know what became of his cash? Cathy
Daily Times Davenport, Scott, Iowa Friday, Oct 12, 1906 JAMESTOWN JAMESTOWN, Oct. 10- Mrs. Stillman has sold her cottage to John Buckmeier and has moved to Canton, Ill., where her husband has been working in the coal mines. Her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Will Petersen, have moved there also as there is a very poor show for work here in the coal mines. The shafts that are running here now are about worked out. There are several veins of coal here yet that could be worked if some man with a little capital would come along and open up some of these places that contain coal. Mr. Brown has 40 acres of land with a good body of coal under it that could be worked to advantage and Messrs. Sam and Ed James and Mrs. John James have coal under their land also that could be worked with a profit to some men with a little capital. George Secoy has sold his cottage to his mother and has moved to Buffalo. Mr. Langwith has harvested his crop of onions and expects to have 1800 bushels. The funeral of Mrs. Peter Willey was largely attended, the cortege being a mile in length. She was an old settler, highly esteemed and respected by all who knew her. Eddie James, Jr., broke through into the old works in his new shaft and the water from the old mines came rushing in so fast that he has had to buy an engine to keep the water out before the men could get in to work. TIPTON [ Cedar Co.] TIPTON, Ia., Oct. 10-Mrs. M. E. Rodebush, a longtime resident of Tipton passed away Thursday evening, the funeral services being held Friday morning at the home at 9 o'clock and the remains were taken to Mechanicsville for interment. L.L. Kennedy, the candidate for recorder, is the only veteran of the civil war who has a place on any of the tickets in the field. Mrs. H.R. Porter has gone to Sac City for a visit at the home of her brother, R.M. Lang. Bert Ochiltree has returned to Tipton and will engage in business. This is his former home town. Tipton friends of E.S. Templeton regret to learn that he is seriously ill at his home in Bennett. Owing to his advanced age there is but little hope for his recovery. Mrs. Nellie May, who has been making an extended visit at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Spear, left this morning for Cleveland, Ohio. Mike Robinson, assistant engineer of the Electric light plant and Miss Leo Timmons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Timmons, were married this week at the home of the latter's sister in Vinton.
