Davenport Democrat Davenport, Scott, Iowa Feb 8, 1872 The Courts District Court Criminal docket well-nigh disposed of this forenoon-a case or two not quite prepared being all that was left. In the case of Rogers, the street car driver, the jury returned a righteous verdict of "not guilty"; and this is to say that when a passenger ceases to be a man and becomes a brute-disregarding all wholesome rules of the company, as well as all general decencies, that the driver may put him out, even though in so doing he uses extraordinary measures. State vs. Messinger; defendant charged with defending himself with a razor from the dangerous assaults of a hag who insisted on becoming a member of his household. It appears that the defendant defended himself too much, and upon plea of guilty was fined $50.00 and costs. State vs. Friday; defendant accused of a threat to chastise a recreant schoolmaster in District No. 2, Rockingham-which schoolmaster has since been dismissed by the Board. No one appearing to prosecute, case dismissed. Grand Jury reported true bills against Wm. Harding and Frank Hand for stealing A.W. Vanderveer's coat and gloves on the 6th of Jan. last; plea of guilty of petit larceny; jail 30 days.Against Willie Schmidt for larceny-stealing some sixty dollars from J.W. Bogarth, at the Ferry House, in Davenport last. Police Court Four cases before Justice Peters today, as follows: Geo. H. Wilson, for being intoxicated, was fined $2.80 and costs, part of which he paid. Jacob Nelson, for vagrancy, was taxed $5 and costs, and being unable to pay, was committed. John Flynn, was arrested for disturbing the public peace of his neighbors, and was fined there for $5 and costs and committed. Feb. 12, 1872 Police Court John Connelley was up on a charge of petit larceny. He had stolen a sack; in fact he seemed to have a peculiar fondness for sacks, he having stolen one or two before. The sack was worth about forty cents, but as this was a repetition of the offense Justice Peters fined him 100 times the value-$40 and costs. He could not pay this, and was sent to jail for thirty days. Cathy Joynt Labath Scott Co, IA USGenWeb Project http://www.celticcousins.net/scott/index.htm Iowa Old Press http://www.IowaOldPress.com/

HISTORY OF WAR ACTIVITIES OF SCOTT COUNTY IOWA 1917-1918 ED. Ralph W. Cram. Davenport, Iowa: Scott Co. Council of National Defense. "Financing the War" The Liberty Loans By A.F. Dawson, County Chairman. SECOND LIBERTY LOAN The experience gained in the first loan campaign made clear the necessity of perfecting an organization which would make a house-to-house canvass for subscriptions in both the city and county. The lack of committees to reach the rural population was particularly felt, and many weeks before the second Liberty Loan was announced much attention was devoted to the details of constructing an organization that would be able to distribute the succeeding issues of bonds equitably and fairly among all the people. The second Liberty Loan was offered for popular subscription between October 1 and October 27, 1917, but about the middle of September active efforts began that resulted in the Scott County Liberty Loan organization which made such an unusual record in this and succeeding loans. The work of organizing the townships of the county required most energetic work. After selecting a chairman for each township, the county chairman called a meeting and but three of the fifteen townships responded. An organization committee was selected, with E.P. Adler at its head, and every township in the county was visited by Chairman Dawson, Mr. Adler, and J. Reed Lane. At least one, and in many instances two organizations meetings were held in each township and committees were brought together who pledged themselves to raise the quota which would be assigned to their district. In Davenport twenty-five team captains were selected to make a thorough canvass of the city. They were C.M. Littleton, C.M. Chocrane, L.J. Dougherty, Joseph Deutsch, Charles Grilk, Leon H. Hass, William Heuer, H.J. McFarland, Harry Faeber, I. Petersberger, H.K. Spencer, F.D. Throop, George White, F.B. Yetter, E.L. Goff, L.M.B. Morrissey, S.E. Greenbaum, John H. Ruhl, A.J. Faeber, Fred Henigbaum, Woodworth Clum, Chris. Heuck, Geo. W. Cannon, Erwin Holbrook, And W.T. Cotter. Each captain selected ten men as active team workers, making a city organization of 275 men. When the announcement was received from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago that Scott county had been assigned a minimum quota of $5,094,250 there was a general feeling that this goal could not be reached. It is true that the normal quota for Scott county was only slightly more than $3,000,000, but the organization decided to ignore this lesser figure and set forever at rest any lurking doubt as to the loyalty and patriotism of the people of the county. The quota allotted to the entire county was divided among the townships and the city of Davenport in proportion to their resources. On this basis Davenport was to raise $4,195,250 and the county outside $899,000. The tremendous task of raising this large sum of money was begun with an enthusiasm and determination which made success inevitable. The entire city organization met at luncheon at the Blackhawk Hotel October 16th for final instructions, and before leaving they pledged themselves to sell the city's full quota. For the next nine days this organization made the most intensive drive the city had ever known. Daily meetings of the organization were held at which reports were submitted, and enthusiasm mounted higher and higher at each successive meeting, as the total of subscriptions climbed steadily upward. The climax was reached at the final luncheon meeting October 27th, when both the city and county were carried "over the top," with a total subscription of $5,652,700. This was more than half a million in excess of the maximum quota, and was 185 per cent of the normal quota. The total number of bond buyers was 12,614 or the equivalent of a bond to every family. This splendid total was raised as follows: Reported by city teams..............................................$2,533,250 Reported by banks.................................................... 1,063,250 Subscribed by patriotic syndicate............................... 1,000,000 Reported by township teams..................................... 956,200 Reported by Boy Scouts.......................................... 100,000 The syndicate above referred to comprised twenty of the leading citizens of Davenport, headed by Joe R. Lane, and entered by subscription for a block of one million dollars of bonds. Another of the outstanding features of this remarkable campaign was the sale of almost a million dollars to the farmers- one of the very few instances in the whole country in which the farmers of a single county subscribed so liberally. This was accomplished through a complete canvass of each township by local committees under the direction of the following township chairmen: F.C. Keppy, Dr. W.I. Vanderveer, C.F. Emler, Rudolph Schroeder, F.C. Ringey, Charles Otto, Grover Meyer, F.C. Michael, P.J. Thede, Adolph P. Arp, Z.G. Suiter, M.H. Calderwood, H.O. Brownlie, Carl S. Finne, G.A. Moffat, and William Hanne.8 Cathy Joynt Labath Scott Co, IA USGenWeb Project http://www.celticcousins.net/scott/index.htm

Burlington Weekly Hawkeye Burlington, Des Moines co. Iowa June 30, 1860 IOWA NEWS. Wool vs. Cotton- It now appears that the leading influences in Davenport are going in favor of the establishment of a woolen factory there rather than a cotton factory. The majority of practical business men think that a woolen factory would be by far the most preferable as well as profitable. Brutal Assault- A man named James McCarty, while in a state of intoxication last Monday night, was brutally assaulted and almost killed by a notorious character in Davenport known as "one armed Charlie," keeper of a house of ill fame. The ruffian was assisted by two others named Ed. Lavender and Scott Stevens. They were arrested and committed the next day. Cathy Joynt Labath Iowa Old Press http://www.IowaOldPress.com/
If you're looking for someone who died in Scott Co., and have an idea of about when the person died, I'd think a call to the Clerk of Court's office at the courthouse should do it. Some courthouses have grouped their entire probate files into one comprehensive database (wills, estate files, orphans court settlements, etc.). I don't know if Scott County is like this, but it wouldn't hurt to call them. The courthouse is at 416 W. Fourth St. The Clerk of Courts office number is: (563) 326-8649 x. 8419. I'd call them early in the day before they get busy; chances are some nice person can do a quick check. They can also give you the fee for copies, etc. Again, your best success will be in already knowing about when your ancestor died. The pre-1928 will index is posted on the Scott Co. Iowa Genealogy page. I take it your person is a more recent decedent than that. David in Richmond, VA
Pretty simple question here. How does one find if a will was ever written? Is there a site that any of you know that I could do a name search? Thanks

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Quickenstedt, Rintleman, Baurose Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Yl.2ADE/2645 Message Board Post: Hello, I am looking for any information pertaining to the Fritz QUICKENSTEDT family. In the early 1850s the Quickenstedt family came to the United States (Davenport, Iowa) to avoid being drafted. Fritz Quickenstedt was born 26 May 1833 in Holstein. He was first in the cigar trade and then owned a saloon, Unter Der Linden. Fritz married Sophia RINTLEMAN. Their children were Frederick (b. 13 May 1861), Ernest (b. 3 July 1857), August & Minnie. Brothers, Frederick and Ernest left Davenport for Texas & settled in Hillsboro, Texas in the 1890s. Thank you, J. Schwenker
