Surnames: Waterhouse Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Yl.2ADE/383.2 Message Board Post: Hoping that Ron and Cathryn are still checking message board. Please email me about this Waterhouse family as I have more to add and would like to compare notes. Of interest/confusion was the reference to 'Niagara', Michigan in one of the posts. I don't find a Niagara, Michigan now or historically. Possibly mis-read record or mis-information given for death record??? They certainly came out of Michigan to but not from "Niagara". They did go from NY to Michigan abt 1833/34 then to Iowa abt 1838/39 then some to Colorado and other points as far as I've tracked. John Waterhouse (Jr.) went NY>MI>IA>IL>IA Ron, did you ever find the burial place? I have some buried over in Clinton Co., Iowa that are of this family. One is a Clarissa and she died in 1843 but I'm not certain whom she is. Has anyone found a marriage for a John Waterhouse and a Sarah between 1843 and 1850 in Scott Co.? The father John is listed with a wife Sarah in 1850 Census in Scott Co., Iowa. It appears that Clarissa Jane is a repeated name in the familes so I wonder if the Clarissa that died in 1843 is the mother of the family or?? It's hard to say as no birth date is given. I know two of the other Waterman's buried there. I'd like to make contact with anyone researching this family. Looking forward to a reply Darla [email protected]

    1. [IASCOTT] Bio of Robert Humphrey
    2. Cathy Joynt Labath
    3. Biographical History and Portrait Gallery of Scott County. 1895: American Biographical Publishing Co. ROBERT HUMPHREY. One of the pioneers who settled in Scott County in 1839 was the venerable gentleman whose name heads this brief biography. Robert Humphrey was a native of Indiana, in which State he was brought up and received a common school education. Being a member of the Presbyterian Church, soon after coming to Scott County he organized and became the superintendent of a Sabbath-school at the old log school-house on section three in Buffalo Township. In those days, according to the statements of the old settlers, religion had not crossed the Mississippi river, and as parents did not take a great deal of interest in things spiritual, the Sunday-school did not prosper. Mr. Humphrey raised a family of seven children: John H., Eliza, James H., Mary, who married William Moss, and died many years ago; George, who died young; Anna H., now the wife of William F.C. Lewis of Blue Grass, and William, an attorney. Mrs. Humphrey died about 1880. Mr. Humphrey was a man of regular habits, had a vigorous constitution, and was in his ninety-fourth year at the time of his death, which occurred November 26, 1892. He was a charter member of the Presbyterian church organized in Blue Grass in 1852 at the residence of the late Mary E. Robison, by James D. Mason. An industrious, honest, unpretentious Christian gentleman, he was beloved by all who knew him. Cathy Joynt Labath Scott Co, IA USGenWeb Project http://www.celticcousins.net/scott/index.htm

Henry Dohrman, a hide and leather merchant, on Second street, had a clerk named August Otto in his employ for some time, up to February 1, when he was discharged. It is supposed that he then went to Des Moines. Another clerk went out there a few days ago, and then discovered that Otto had been collecting bills there in the name of the house, on his own account. He immediately telegraphed home, to have Otto arrested, as it appears he came back again. But he was nowhere to be found, and it is reported that he left her for other parts last Tuesday. He is a defaulter to the amount of $400, which, of course, Dohrmann loses. It seems that he was engaged to be married on next Monday evening, which pleasant little affair will hardly come off. March 9, 1872 Police Court. Only one case before Justice Peters today. Thomas Mayer got drunk, was arrested and fined $2 and costs, which he will work out at the jail. March 15, 1872 Arrested for Larceny Last night officers Keating and Seims arrested a colored man named Nathan Wilson, who it was discovered had stolen several numbers of gaiters and slippers from Wm. Gray & Son, and Fred Struck, all of which were found in his house. This morning he was brought up before Justice Peters and plead guilty to the charge, and was fined $100 and costs in default of which he was sent to jail for two months. The reason for his fine being so high, is in fact that he has been convicted several times before of stealing boots and shoes, and this last conviction made the fourth. He will undoubtedly get over his weakness for boots and shoes before long. 1. [IASCOTT] Karl Arthur Wittig, Suicide in Fishertown - Newspaper Article
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wittig, Zimmerman, Baumgartel Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Yl.2ADE/2647 Message Board Post: TAKES OWN LIFE, REASON UNKNOWN Arthur Wittig Suicides at Home of Sister in Fishertown K. Arthur Wittig, a young man of 24 years of age, committed suicide **line illegible** at the home of his sister, Mrs. Gertrude Zimmerman of Fishertown. No certain cause for the young man's unfortunate action can be ascertained as he left no note or gave no explanation of intimation that he contemplated doing such a rash deed. The young man had been helping his sister in the cleaning of the house nearly all the afternoon, afterwards playing with the children in one of the rooms. His sister had left the room to do some work in the kitchen and the young man left shortly afterwards telling the children that he was going up to his room. When his sister returned to the room she asked the children where Arthur had gone and they answered that he had gone upstairs. She then told one of the little girls to go up “an tell me to him” (sic) to come as it was too cold for him up there. The little girl returned a moment later and informed her mother that her uncle was sitting on the floor. Upon investigation, Mrs. Zimmerman discovered the young man hanging by a belt strap to the bed, dead. He had placed the strap around his neck and fastened the other end to the bed and was so suspended that he gave the impression that he was sitting on the floor. Lost Money In Land One of the theories that was advanced **partial line illegible** was the fact that he lost some money in Washington lands a year or so ago, while another reason was that he might have been suffering from the effects of an operation which had been performed on his nose a short time ago. Wittig had left here about six years ago for Spokane, Wash., but had returned here a year ago and had lived with his sister since. He was born March 17, 1887, in Iowa and had lived most of his life in this vicinity. He was a blacksmith by trade. Surviving the young man are his father, Alwin Wittig; three (sic - four are named here) brothers, Alwin Jr, Charles, Fred and William, and *four sisters. Mrs. Gertrude Zimmerman, Mrs. Mary Baumgartel, and Ella and Louise Wittig. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock from the home of Mrs. Zimmerman, with interment at Fairmount cemetery. Davenport Democrat, Scott Co, Iowa, 5 Feb 1912. (Article/like an obit) *Living sister Anna Elisabeth Wittig isn't listed. There were 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls, and Arthur was the first to pass away.
