In the character and activities of a few men Davenport still carries on in its old traditions as one of the great capitals of the lumber industry of the Middle West. Mr. Wyman is closely linked with those traditions that at one time represented extensive interests in the lumber business. Mr. Wyman's mother was Anna Phelps, sister of John B. Phelps, who with James E. Lindsay in 1862 formed the partnership long known as Lindsay & Phelps Company, with headquarters at Davenport. This firm built a saw mill in 1866, and thereafter for years figured with increasing importance in the lumber development of the Northwest. It is significant that in the publication issued some years ago, entitled History of 100 Prominent Lumber Men of America, two of the names that came in for special consideration were John B. Phelps and james E. Lindsay. The Lindsay & Phelps Company continued as an organization until 1930. Mr. Wyman was born at Schroon, Essex County, New York, October 10, 1857, being a son of Daniel and Anna (Phelps) Wyman. He was educated at grammar and high schools at Crown Point and Westport, New York, and also took a course in a business college at Troy, New York. In 1878 he came west to Davenport and began in association and work with the Lindsay & Phelps Company, an association which was continued until the dissolution of the company in 1930. He is also president of the Southern Lumber Company, with holdings in Arkansas, is president of the Warren and Ouachita Valley Railway Company, is secretary of the Cloquet Lumber Company, with holdings in Minnesota, secretary and treasurer of the Sound Timber Company, with holdings in the States of Washington and Oregon; is vice president of the Richardson Land & Timber Company at Davenport. For many years he was president of the Southland Lumber Company of Louisiana, whose holdings were disposed of a few years ago. In 1887 Mr. Wyman married Miss Lillie Lindsay, daughter of James E. Lindsay. She died December 26, 1905. In 1917 Mr. Wyman married Mrs. Margaret Blair Lindsay. Mr. Wyman has one daughter, Mrs. Edith W. Wilson, of New York and two grandsons, Richard Wyman Wilson and John Oliver Wilson. Mr. Wyman is a member and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church at Davenport and a trustee of the Y.M.C.A., of both of which institutions he has been a large benefactor. he is also a member of the Outing Club, Davenport Country Club and Chamber of Commerce. 2. The only orphanage I know about in that area is the Annie Wittenmyer home. My parents were there about the same time has your family. I will check and see if they remember the names because my parents were born in 1922 and 1925, it appears they are in the same age range. It was a state run facility. It was not just an orphange as my mom ended up there after becoming a ward of the state when it was deemed her mother could not care for the seven children. Both my parents were there until age 18 or so. Quite a few kids there were placed out and I do not mean adopted out. When this facility closed in the 1980's, the records went to the state historical building. I know this because as a student at U of Iowa, I worked there part time and heard the mention of them. If they still have them, they are here in Des Moines. I asked once but never pursued the issue. There used to be reunions for those who grew up there. I do not believe they are having one this year because of the group that regularly attended, several have passed within the past year. I have asked but the names do not ring bells with my parents. Children were housed in cottages or small houses by ages. The boys were on one side of the complex and the girls on the other. Each cottage had a matron or house mother. These cottages were just for sleeping. There was a seperate hall for eating, church, school and infirmary. It was a self-sufficient facility so most of the kids worked on the site. Most of the information you find on Annie Wittenmeyer pertains to her starting the facility as an orphanage for children of civil war vets. I'm sure there has to be some books out there regarding the facility after it because state run.

Surnames: WILLIAMS, Hook, Rode, Rhode, Warren Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Yl.2ADE/2658 Message Board Post: Suffering severe financial problems, my WILLIAMS grandparents family fell apart in Dubuque, Iowa-in late 1920s and in 1930. The children in my WILLIAMS family from Dubuque were placed in a Davenport orphanage late 1930, early 1931--sometime after the death of the grandmother Magdalena (Pauly-Wilms) WILLIAMS who died Sept. 29, 1930 in Dubuque. I am trying to discover what happened to my dad's brother, Walter, born about 1921, who died from gangrene from an injured leg---after trying to run away from the orphanage with his brother Donald. My dad, Arthur Joseph b 1914 always thought Walter died about age 7 or 8, but I think he was at least age 9 as I found him on the 1930 census living with his grandmother Magdalena WILLIAMS in Dubuque and in the household were his father Joseph Henry WILLIAMS and Walter's brother Donald, b 1916--as well as a lodger. Magdalena ran a rooming house in Dubuque. It was after Magdalena's Sept. 1930 death I think that the boys and other siblings were placed in the Davenport orphanage--and Walter very soon died. Some of the 7 children of Ivy Laura SKEMP WILLIAMS and her husband Joseph Henry WILLIAMS went to the Davenport orphanage and lived there until age 18. My dad lived with his aunt Hattie SKEMP AGARD and husband Charles, and Jeanette Louise, born 1924, was adopted or "fostered" by a WARREN family in Marshalltown, Iowa. Children who were in the orphanage either for a short time or until age 18 were: Catherine WILLIAMS b 1919; Barbara WILLIAMS, born about 1928; Donald Robert, born 1916, Walter, born about 1921, and possibly Jeanette Louise for awhile--born 1924. It was Walter that died I think in early 1931. I need to find some death information / burial information . . . . and any information in general on the orphanage. I don't know the name of the orphanage--and Catherine who grew up in the orphanage and who died last year in Delaware County-- where she lived from 1940 on--only knew that it was an orphanage in Davenport. After all this time, is it possible to obtain records? Another child, Dorothy b about 1926-27 I think, born to this family was given away by the mother, Ivy Laura, to a HOOK (married a TOOMER) and has been lost to the family since the 1940s when she was married Catheirne said to a RODE / RHODE (spelling?). All of these children are now deceased, (though we don't know what happened to Dorothy) --with the exception of Don, now very old and living in Des Moines. Thanks for any information . . .Audrey Williams Stanaland

    1. Bio of Wm. C. Wadsworth
    2. Cathy Joynt Labath
    3. Biographical History and Portrait Gallery of Scott County.1895: American Biographical Publishing Co. WILLIAM C. WADSWORTH Mr. Wadsworth traces his American ancestry back to the early settlement of New England, his forefathers landing at Plymouth Rock early in the seventeenth century. He was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, June 27, 1826, and is a son of James L. Wadsworth and Sallie A. Wadsworth, nee Cook. He was educated in the common schools at Litchfield, supplemented by a course in the Danbury (Connecticut) Academy. His inclination and desires pointed to a mercantile career, and immediately after leaving school, at the age of sixteen, he became a clerk in a general store in Farmington, Connecticut, at a salary of forty dollars per year and board. Three years later he determined to become better posted in the business than the opportunities afforded in a little country town, and accepted a clerkship in a drygoods business in New Haven at a salary of three hundred and fifty dollars per annum. In 1848 he was tendered a position in Macon, Georgia, and in 1851 established himself in business in Savannah. The firm was known as W.C. Wadsworth & Company, and was composed of the subject of this sketch and an uncle of his. In 1854 a yellow fever epidemic devastated the Southern States, and rendered the mercantile business unprofitable. He then sought a new location and settled in Davenport, Iowa. He there opened a drygoods business in 1855, and was successful from the outset. He was a thoroughly experienced merchant, was progressive and always carried the largest stock of goods in the city. In 1861 he opened a retail establishment in Rock Island, and also established a wholesale business in Davenport. Shortly thereafter he sold out both retail houses and devoted his entire time and attention to the interests of his growing wholesale business, which he has conducted successfully up to the present time. Mr. Wadsworth has from time to time become interested in various other business enterprises. 3. I think I just found out some new information on my husband's great grandaunt, Anna M Petersen. She was married first to James Garvey and had at least one daughter named Vivian Garvey. Whether she divorced James or he died, is unknown, however, by the 1925 Buffalo Twp State Census it appears she has remarried to Alvah Passwater who was previously married to Julia Hawkins. Alvah Passwater and Julia Hawkins had two daughters named Alvaretta and Gladys. Anyone related to James Garvey or Alvah Passwater who could provide me with further information on Anna M Petersen Garvey Passwater? I would like to find her obit and possibly where in Germany she was born or emigrated from since I have had no luck on finding that information on her brother, James Petersen, aka.my husband's great grandfather. The other known sibling of James and Anna was Peter Petersen- all children of Hans and Fridericke Petersen, the all too elusive great great grandparents of my not so elusive husband, John Henry Labath, Jr. Cathy Labath
