IA ROHNER, Christian, 78, widower, father-in-law (it states he was born in Iowa, which is wrong) Civil War record: ROHNER, Christian, enlisted at Sioux City, IA, as a bugler on 25 Sep 1861 at age 25. Transferred to Company I, 7th Iowa Cavalry Regiment on 14 July 1863. Mustered out at Sioux City, IA, on 23 November 1864. I wondered if he was part of the border brigade because it appears he stayed in the local area. So I did some research on this regiment and find that they were, indeed, stationed along posts in Kansas and Nebraska, mainly for protection of wagon trains from hostile Indians, and also guarding telegraph lines and remote outposts. I hope this is helpful to you. If I can help further, just let me know.
