February 15, 1837, Sparta, NC, d. February 21, 1930, Carson, Iowa, m. Rachel Dillard in Sparta, NC. He lived in Sparta area, and was the son of Zachariah Moxley & Susanna Wagoner. I have copies of his journals in which he describes himself as an avowed abolitionist and Union sympathizer during the Civil War, and that he ran an underground railroad for defecting Confederate soldiers. He got his nickname from being an outstanding marksman. He talks about the Confedrate Army putting a bounty on him for his activities, and having is house burned down. He eventually moved to Wheeler Grove, Iowa, where he lived the rest of his life. Some his stories were published in a local paper in the Carson area, but I am not sure which one. I am looking for any historical, or anecdotal information that might be available about him. Also, what newspapers were being published in the Carson, Iowa, area between 1880 - 1930 that he might have submit! ted articles/letters to for publication? I am interested in finding more of his published letters. Thanks, Rod L. Moxley, g-grandson.
Many RootsWeb lists housed on the same server were affected by some unscheduled down-time caused by hardware problems....since March 26th. Mail is running again, but current messages will be posted first, and older messages will gradually be re-introduced into the queue so as not to overload the servers. This will probably create some confusion for the first couple of days, when you might see an answer before you see the original question. If you had posted a message / query which you haven't yet seen posted, give it a day or two, and if you don't see it, just post the message again. Expect to see mail chronologically out-of-order for a day or two, so if your in-box automatically "sorts by date" mail may jump _up_ in your in-box. Once the server problem was noticed, incoming mail was cached for later (deferred) delivery, but anything posted at the same time period when the server quit is probably lost. Rootsweb

Transferred to Company I, 7th Iowa Cavalry Regiment on 14 July 1863. Mustered out at Sioux City, IA, on 23 November 1864. I wondered if he was part of the border brigade because it appears he stayed in the local area. So I did some research on this regiment and find that they were, indeed, stationed along posts in Kansas and Nebraska, mainly for protection of wagon trains from hostile Indians, and also guarding telegraph lines and remote outposts. I hope this is helpful to you. If I can help further, just let me know.
