    3. Is your film for the Council Bluffs Courthouse or the Avoca Courthouse? That may be your difficulty. There were two courthouses in Pottawattamie county until the 1970's. I am not sure which licenses Betty transcribed, but I would guess that they were from the Avoca courthouse. Good luck. 1. [IAPOTTAW] Gamblers in Council Bluffs
    2. My Dad always told me that Council Bluffs was quite a gambling town back in the 1800's and 1900's. Before today, I had never seen that listed as an occupation, however. While searching through the 1870 census for Council Bluffs, I came across the following, which I thought was interesting: M. F. Snyder, 34, gambler, b. NY Chas. Pool, 28, gambler, b. PA Thos. Lyman, 27, gambler, b. PA They each listed assets as a few thousand dollars, so they must have been on a winning streak. I thought this was fun and just wanted to share it. Mona

    1. [IAPOTTAW] Families from Obituary
    2. Constance
    3. This morning while I reading some of the obituaries on the Obituary board it came to me that we have whole families listed here. I know how important an obituary can be and how we usually go after the earlier obituaries. So I thought I would see what I could come up using the current obituaries that have been posted on the Obituary board. For the "Newbies" to our list and to genealogy this might be of interest to you and a maybe even starting place?? I took just five surnames at random and began to form the families (just from our posted obituaries), just to see what information if any I could put together on children, parents, spouses, etc could be put together on the family of the deceased. Please remember the obituaries I am using are mostly for the years of 2000-2003. Here are the results: Edward J. & Alm (Dau) Stroeble Lucille (Stroeble) Williams Hadfield, b. 13 Dec 1915; d. 7 Dec 2002 Wilbert Stroebele, 12 Jan 1913, d. 2 Mar 2003. Spouse: Bernadette Langer Everett Stroeble, Edwin and Bernadine (Stein) Martens Lucile Marie (Martens) Cline, b. abt 1932; d. 20 Nov 2002. Spouse: Jessie P. Walter and Lillian Casson Beverly C. (Casson) Andersen, b. 26 Dec 1934; d. 6 Dec 2002. Spouse: Ronald Anderson Walter L. Casson Jr. Wayne L. Casson Weslie L. Casson Marie (Casson) Christensen Eileen (Casson) Grobe Evelyn (Casson) Wild Leta (Casson) Hoffman Janet (Casson) McKern Fred and Laura (Christensen) Johnson Lillian Marie (Johnson) Andersen, b. 13 May 1912; d. 30 Jan 2002 (Lillian's obituary states that she and Harry were the only children born to Fred and Laura Johnson. Harry Johnson, d. before 30 Jan 2002 These families were put together for no other purpose than to show how much information can be gleaned from an obituary....even a recent obituary. So to all of you Newbies out there....Be sure to read the obituaries! You never know what you will find in them that may aid in furthering your research. Just something to think about..... Constance

    1. [IAPOTTAW] SALES
    2. I don't think your William E. Sales was the son of Wm. or Jane Sales from England. The 1910 census for Dixon County, Nebraska, lists what appears to be your William E. Sales and wife Laura, and that census says William's father was born in Indiana. Sales, William E., 50, married once, 26 yrs, b. IA, father b. IN, mother b. IA, farmer Sales, Laura, wife, 47, married once, 26 yrs, had 7 children and 7 survive, b. IA, father b. OH, mother b. OH Sales, Elmer, son, 23, b. IA Sales, Josephine, dau., 18, b. IA Sales, Asa, son, 9, b. IA Sales, Otto, son, 5, b. IA I suspect your William E. Sales is related to the Sales clan that came from Putnam Co., IN, to lower Harrison Co. and upper Pottawattamie Co., Iowa, along with the SKELTON, JONES, and other families. There was a large wagon train of families that arrived in this area during the great Mormon movement. In the 1870 census for Iowa, there are several SALES men born in Indiana living near Missouri Valley, Iowa, and also Rockford Township, Pott. Co. Some are buried at the Branson Cemetery south of Missouri Valley. The 1870 census shows: JOHN A 26 M W IN IA HARRISON ST JOHN TWP 1870 LOOT 52 M W TN IA POTTAWATTAMIE ROCKFORD TWP 1870 WILLIAM 25 M W IN IA HARRISON ST JOHN TWP 1870 All of these men came with that group from Indiana; I don't see that any of them have a son, William E., who would have been about age 10 in 1870. If your William SALES is confirmed as the son of William and Jane, from England, then he appears with them in the 1870 census in Council Bluffs, 4th Ward, page 114: C. F. Sales, 24, teamster, b. OH, head A. J. Sales, wife, keeping house, b. IL Wm. Sales, 50, carpenter, b. England Jane Sales, 45, keeping house, b. England Wm. Sales, 14, b. IA Hilda Sales, 13, b. IA T. A. Crandal, 28, life ins agent, b. PA H. E. Crandal, 28, b. VA, wife A. F. L. Crandal, age 6, male, b. NY M. A. Crandal, age 3, b. IL E. Crandal, 1, female, b. IA I hope this helps you.
