Lidgett 1872-1908 <http://iagenweb.org/boards/pottawattamie/obituaries/index.cgi?rev=32579> AUTHOR: Deb Gordon DATE: 7/12/2003 at 13:48:22 Surnames: LIDGETT Claude G. Lidgett 09/10/1908 While assisting companions in dragging a lake near Clearmont, Wyo., last Monday afternoon for the body of a man who had been drowned therein two days before, Claude G. Lidgett of Council Bluffs was himself jerked into the water and drowned before assistance could reach him. News of the catastrophe reached Council Bluffs Monday evening and Joseph Lidgett, the father, went to Wyoming that evening, bringing the body of his son with him. The funeral will be held from the residence, 615 East Broadway at 2:30 this afternoon. Burial will be in Walnut Hill cemetery. According to the story told Mr. Lidgett by the companions of his son at Clearmont, Claude Lidgett, together with a number of other men, was dragging the lake with chains stretched across the water which were pulled back and forth along the bed of the lake. The searchers were all riding horses and holding to the chains. In some manner Lidgett and his horse became entangled with the chain and were thrown into the water with Mr. Lidgett underneath the animal. Although efforts were made to get him out in time, Mr. Lidgett strangled to death. The body of the other man was not recovered until a day later. Mr. Lidgett was formerly a resident of Council Bluffs. He went to Wyoming about a year ago and has been there ever since. He was 36 years old and leaves a wife, four children, his mother and father and one brother. *************************************************************************** This is an automatically-generated notice. Sounds like Alice Rollins Higbee was quite a colorful, independent woman for her time. You mention that Frank and Alice are in the 1880 census in Avoca, Iowa, but that you don't have a name or date of birth for her son. The 1880 census lists the following in Avoca, Iowa: Frank Higbee, age 22, b. IL, traveling salesman, father b. OH, mother b. OH Alice Higbee, age 24, b. IN, father b. PA, mother b. NY R. Fred Higbee, age 1, son, b. IA I would assume R. Fred Higbee to be the son you are looking for? Interestingly, I find in the 1910 census in Crawford Co., Kansas, Washington Township, page 139: Frank M. Higbee, age 51, married 21 yrs, b. IL, father b. OH, mother b. OH, coalminer Amelia Higbee, age 35, gave birth to 4 children, 4 survive, married 21 yrs, b. MO Charles Higbee, age 19, b. OK, son Annie Higbee, age 17, b. OK, daughter Jessie Higbee, age 9, b. MO, son Elmer Higbee, age 6, b. MO, son This Frank Higbee is the same age and born in the same state (IL), as the Frank you find in Iowa, in addition to the fact that this Frank's parents are also born in Ohio. Interesting. In the 1930 census for Detroit, MI, Pct. 15, April 18, 1930, sheet 13B, living in a boarding house on Connors Avenue: Frank Higbee, 71, widower, b. IL, father b. OH, mother b. OH, laundryman (veteran? No). Don't know if this helps you or not. Mona Sarratt Knight
Bob, I think you should write a novel. viola ----- Original Message ----- From: Oregon Rain To: IAPOTTAW-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, July 14, 2003 8:40 PM Subject: [IAPOTTAW] Frank D. Higbee & Alice Rollins ----- Original Message ----- From: Robert Stahl To: 'Gail Meyer Kilgore' Sent: Friday, July 11, 2003 11:56 AM Subject: RE: Assistance Requested Am tracking the life of Alice Rollins who married Frank D. Higbee in Pottawattamie County on August 11, 1877, and was listed as living in Avoca, IO in the 1880 Federal Census. Alice later became a close friend of Tom Jeffords, who is better known as the "Blood brother" of the Apache Chief, Cochise. She was one of the first female "stampeder" in the Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon in 1898, was a authoress, and owned mining property in Arizona. However, her life before 1898 is virtually a blank slate, and she was known to fudge details about her life, such as claiming different birth years and birth states. Her one-time lover and business partner claimed she had two previous marriages before her 1894 marriage in California, and that she had a son and was divorced twice before 1894. Frank Higbee was one husband, and she might have married and divorced him twice. If she only married him once, then I don't know whether her marriage to Frank Higbee was her first or second marriage. I have no name or date of birth for her son, no specific date of Alice's birth or divorces or other marriage, or information about her parents and siblings. It seems clear that by 1892 Alice (by whatever last name she was using at the time) was out of Iowa and into the Dakota territories and New Mexico and Arizona territories. Would deeply appreciate any info about Alice and any of the other people, events, etc. mentioned above. Finally, Alice's mother, maybe using the name Rollins, might have passed away in Iowa about 1912-1915. Am looking for any original or copies of any documents (e.g., birth certificates, marriage licenses, marriage applications, divorce papers, death certificates) related to any of the above mentioned family of Alice as well as on Alice herself. Thank you.
