Sherlock Patrick H. Sherlock, respected pioneer of Palo Alto county, died at his home here Sunday afternoon after a lingering illness of various complications. Funeral services were held Wednesday forenoon in St. Thomas church here, with Father McEvoy, of Ruthven, officiating. The pallbearers, all grandsons of the deceased, were: George and Sherlock Hartnett, Edward and John Joyce, Gene Bough and Patrick Sherlock. Burial was made in St. John's cemetery. The Foy Funeral Home was in charge. Mr. Sherlock was born November 29, 1848, in Lucan, Ontario. Thus he attained the ripe old age of 88 years. He came to Iowa in 1867, and was engaged in railroad consruction work near Fort Dodge, for two years before coming to Palo Alto county. In 1869, he took up a homestead in Silver Lake township where he resided until moving to Emmetsburg in 1917 to enjoy well-earned retirement from his farming labors. He was married in the old town of Emmetsburg to Miss Ellen Lynch in 1879. Seven children were born, as follows; Len and Joe, of Emmetsburg, Henry, of South Sioux City, Neb., Gene, of Jackson, Mich., Mrs. John Joyce of Ayshire, Mrs. George Hartnett, of West Bend and Mrs. John Bough, of Emmetsburg. Also, he is survived by one brother, James Sherlock, of Ayshire. There are 19 grandchildren. To chronicle the interesting incidents of Mr. Sherlock's life would require much more space than is available in this issue of the Reporter. His pioneer experiences in Iowa were filled with adventure and hardship that required the strongest kind of endurance. Of keen memory until his final days, he could relate with accurate detail historical facts following the Civil War, and many other early day happenings that went into the development of the state and the nation. To men of Mr. Sherlock's courage and foresight, Palo Alto county citizens are greatly indebted, as their strength of character overcame great obstacles in order to conquer and build a wilderness into the comfortable community now enjoyed here.
