Came to Palo Alto in 1869. Funeral Was Held Wednesday. Mrs. Caroline Brennan, a resident of Emmetsburg since 1903, and one of the few remaining Palo Alto county pioneers, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. David Joynt, in this city Monday morning shortly before the noon hour. Mrs. Brennan had been failing in health for some time. Her death was due to the many complications that are attendant upon old age. Funeral services for Mrs. Brennan were held Wednesday morning. A solemn requiem Mass was celebrated in the Assumption church. Mrs. Brennan's grandson, Father Robert Joynt of Fort Dodge, was celebrant. He was assisted by Rev. Wm. Molloy as deacon and Rev. Thos. Lawless, as sub-deacon. There was a large attendance. Following the services the remains were laid to rest in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were John Brennan, Joe Pratt, Douglass Brennan, Joe Joynt, Richard Brennan and Joe Dooley. Caroline Stewart was born at Waterloo, Canada West, on February 27, 1846. She would have been 94 years of age in February, 1940. When four years of age with her parents, she moved to Stratford, Ontario, Canada, where her father owned a large farm. She grew to young womanhood on that place. She attended the local schools. In December, 1866, Miss Stewart was united in marriage to John W. Brennan in St. Joseph's church at Stratford. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father Crinnen. Soon after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Brennan arrived in Boone, this state, where they resided for two years. This was in 1869. They then moved onto a farm in Walnut township, Palo Alto county, where they were engaged as tillers of the soil for a number of years. In 1892 Mr. and Mrs. Brennan located in Emmetsburg township where they owned a large farm. In 1903 they moved into Emmetsburg where they decided to make their permanent home. Eight sons and four daughters were born ot Mr. and Mrs. Brennan. Of these John H. Brennan, Jos. Brennan passed away in 1889, James C. Brennan died October 18, 1922 and Frank passed away on August 8, 1938. Two sons also died in infancy. Also deceased are Mrs. Robt. Dooley and Caroline who passed away in 1910. Those who survive are M. W. Brennan, Emmetsubrg township, Michael Brennan, Des Moines, Mrs. Wm. Pratt and Mrs. David Joynt, both of Emmetsburg. Mr. Brennan Sr. was called to the great beyond in 1899. There are 39 grandchildren and 63 great grandchildren who also survive. Among those from a distance who came to Emmetsburg to be present at the funeral Wednesday were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dickeson, Spencer; Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Miller, Amrstrong; Jos. Brennan, Armstrong; Dick Brennan, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Brennan, Des Moines; Joe Pratt, Duluth; Mrs. R. Svoboda, Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Jos. L. Joynt, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Fandel, Whittemore; Mr. and Mrs. Art Fandel, Burt; Gordon Pratt, San Diego, Calif; Mrs. Agnes Miller, Algona; Mrs. Arnold Elbert, Algona; Mrs. Ronald Jackson, Spencer; Mr.and Mrs. Bernard Burns, Estherville; Mrs. Ulrick, Estherville; Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Fandel, Whittemore; Mrs. John Waldron, Whittemore; Mrs. Wm. Higgins, Whittemore; and Mrs. George Fandel, Rodman.
