DODGE HOSPITAL Jacob (Jake) Marti passed away in Mercy hospital, Ft. Dodge Thursday evening February 5. While working in a ditch northwest of town on January 19, the ditch caved in and fractured his pelvic and other bones. He was taken at once to Mercy hospital and seemed to be getting along very well for one of his years, but he contracted double pneumonia and this caused his death. The Schutter ambulance brought the remains to West Bend. Funeral services were held at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church Saturday morning (February 9, 1942) and were conducted by Rev. P.M. Dobberstein. The pall bearers were George Schaller, Joseph Schaller, Jack Banwart, John Mersch, Hiram Ries and Carl Satern. Interment was in the West Bend Cemetery. Mr. Marti was born in Arbeg*, Switzerland July 30, 1880, and was thus 61 years, 6 months and 5 days old at the time of his death. He came to America in 1904** and returned for a visit to his native land twice before his marriage to Anna Marnach in 1912 in St. Peter and Paul's Church, West Bend. His last trip to Switzerland was made in 1930. Soon after his marriage, he moved to a farm and engaged in farming for 23 years. They moved to West Bend in 1935 and operated an oil station. He also did some tiling, which occupation he was engaged in before his marriage. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Marti. One son Fred, preceded him in death (January 2, 1923 - January 30, 1923). He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and eight children: Mrs. Arnold Girres of Graettinger, Mrs. John Bonnstetter of Rodman, Mrs. George Kisch of West Bend, and Mary, Eugene, Bertha, Ernest and Johnnie of West Bend. There are 5 grandchildren. Three sisters and two brothers in Switzerland also mourn his death. Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Welter and family of Knierm, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. George Schaller and family of Humboldt, Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Ries of St. Joe, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Satern and son of Wallingford, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bonnstetter of Whittemore, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Marnach of Emmetsburg, and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Thilges of Bode. * Jakob was born in Ammerzwil, District of Aarberg, Bern, Switzerland ** Should be 1905 Taken from the West Bend Journal, West Bend, Palo Alto County, Iowa
