He was a kind, devoted, provident father, and an unpretentious but useful member of the neighborhoods in which he spent the years of his long career. He respected the rules and the customs that are necessary in social affairs and he was obedient and loyal to those in authority, knowing that law and order must be recognized if the best is to be obtained in American life. He gave his several sons and daughters the best opportunities that his means could provide and he directed them zealously in their aims and efforts to grow up to be creditable factors in the localities in which they resided. Posted on: PaloAlto County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/PaloAltoObits/533 Surname: Higgins, McGowan, Berger, Finn, Joynt, Hand, Kane ------------------------- Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, 22 July 1919 MRS. JOHN HIGGINS LAID TO REST Funeral on Thursday, Was Largely Attended Mrs. John J. Higgins died at her home in this city Tuesday afternoon of last week. Her condition for several weeks was hopeless. She became ill in September. She went to Colfax Springs where she remained for eight weeks. Later she took treatment in Retreat hospital in Des Moines. She was also in Mercy hospital for a short time. She did not receive any encouragement and finally went to Rochester, Minnesota where she consulted the Drs. Mayo. They could not, it seems, do anything to relieve her. She bore her affliction with a resignation that was truly Christian but she gradually became weaker and after many months of lingering, death came to relieve her. The funeral was held Thursday. Services were conducted at the Assumption church, Very Rev. P.F. Farrelly officiating. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. There was an unusually large attendance. Many came from Ayrshire and other neighboring places to be present at the obsequies. The pall bearers were her three nephews, Frank McGowan, Carl Berger and Daniel Higgins and three cousins, John Finn, Charles Joynt and D.W. Joynt. Mary Jane McGowan was born at Dyersville, Iowa, July 4, 1864. Hence she was closing out her fifty-fifth year. She grew to womanhood in her home community. She was married at Dyersville, April 14, 1885, to John J Higgins. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins lived in the vicinity of Dyersville until 1893 when they moved to this county. They located on a farm in Great Oak township. They became prosperous and built a fine home. Last fall they bought James Murray's large residence in this city. They moved into it in March but Mrs. Higgins did not have the good fortune to enjoy it long. Mrs. Higgins is survived by her husband, five sons and four daughters. The sons are Charles, Edmund, Harold and Bertrand. The daughters are Mrs. John Hand of Borup, Minnesota and Misses Mary, Margaret and Loretta Higgins who are at home. Three children died in infancy. Mrs. Higgins death is also mourned by her sister, Mrs. M.B. Kane of Ayrshire and her brother, John McGowan, of Kansas City, Missouri. Two brothers, Thomas and William, preceded her in death. Mrs. Higgins had scarcely passed womanhood's prime when she was taken from the inviting domestic scenes that were so dear to a wife and mother of her taste, temperment and ambition. Nine worthy sons and daughters were regularly the recipients of her love and her attention and all the comforts of the prosperous, happy home were hers to enjoy. It is sad indeed that life, when surroundings are so inviting and promising, should have so many and such bitter disappointments, but Providence undoubtedly knows what is best for all of us and will, in some way, compensate the bereft and sorrowing for the heavy burdens they are asked to bear. Mrs. Higgins worries, during the early stages of her illness, were greatly increased by the absence of her son, Charles, in France and the realization of the perilous dangers to which he was from time to time subjected. For months after she commenced to decline she waited anxiously and longingly for his return. The war department, for some unknown reason, failed to grant him a furlough so that he might come home to see his weak, declining mother. However, Mrs. Higgins never gave up hope until he and his absent sister, Mrs. John Hand, reached her bedside. The deceased was a truly devoted wife, a provident, loving, watchful, zealous mother and a sincere practical Christian lady. She was in every way an active, helpful, useful member of the thrifty public spirited community in which she resided. Her high aims, her commendable resolutions and her ennobling deeds will during the years to come, have a marked influence for good in the lives of her devoted sons and daughters. They will also leave a lasting impression on the minds of the many who mingled with her in neighborhood and other affairs. The sympathy of all goes out to the husband and the other members of the household in the great sorrow that has come to them. WM. O'BRIEN'S SUDDEN DEATH Thursday morning about three o'clock Mrs. Wm. O'Brien met with a very sudden death at her home in this city. She was taken with hemorrhage of the lungs. Mr. O'Brien was aroused and she told him that she was smothering. The attack was so sudden and severe that he could do nothing for her. He ran to the home of Mrs. Carmody just across the street and then for his son Peter, but when Mrs. Carmody reached her bedside she had expired. The shock was a very severe one to the aged husband and the other members of the family. Several days before Mrs. O'Brien had a slight hemorrhage, the first in her life, but she quickly recovered. However, none of her folks thought of danger. Wednesday she did not feel very well. Still, when she retired at a late hour, neither she nor her husband, dreamed that they were to experience such a sudden, such a sad awakening. The funeral took place Saturday morning. It was very largely attended, the deceased having been among the oldest and most widely known residents of the community. The services were held at Assumption church, Very Rev. J.J. Smith officiated. The internment was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were E.P. McEvoy, Alex Jennings, Michael Roach, Michael Geelan, Edward Ryan and P. Mulroney. Ann Daily was born in the county of Kings, Ireland in 1832,(to Thomas and Ann Curry Daily). When 20 years of age she came to the United States. In 1856, she was married at Wilmington, Illinois, to William O'Brien. In 1873 they came to Palo Alto county and located on a farm in Great Oak. They were thrifty and became prosperous. Fifteen years ago they came to Emmetsburg to spend their remaining days. The surviving members of the family are the husband, four sons, and one daughter. The daughter, Mrs. J.J. Hand, lives in Great Oak. Two of the sons, John and Patrick, are well-to-do farmers in Great Oak. Peter conducts a restaurant in this city and William J. is the senior member of the well known mercantile firm of O'Brien & Geelan, of Whittemore. Though the family consists of the number of sons and daughters stated and 21 grandchildren, this is the first death its members are called upton to mourn. Providence has indeed been generous to them. Mrs. O'Brien was a plain, frugal, and upright Christian woman. She was unusually loyal to her convictions and spent her long, active, and useful life primarily in devotion to the practice of the duties of her faith and in discharging the manifold obligations that the true wife and loving, zealous mother owes to those who are nearest and and dearest to her. Her taking off, under the circumstances mentioned, was, of course, painful to those who loved her so long and so fondly, but they have the consolation of knowing that Providence had in many ways been exceedingly kind to her and had given to her many favors not bestowed on others. The Democrat extends its sincere sympathy to the surviving husband, sons and daughter.

Posted on: PaloAlto County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/PaloAltoObits/524 Surname: Laughlin, McCabe, Jackman, Shea, Mulroney, Spies, Kelly, Cretzmeyer ------------------------- Emmetsburg Democrat, Thursday, August 10, 1933 PIONEER RESIDENT Mrs. Laughlin Came to Old Town of Emmetsburg in 1866 Mrs. John T. Laughlin of this city, one of the pioneer ladies of Palo Alto county, died at her home in Emmetsburg early Sunday morning. She suffered a stroke of paralysis about seven weeks ago from which she never recovered. She rallied at times, but it was evident to those about her that the end was near. At the time of her passing she was 76 years of age. The funeral was held Tuesday morning. Services were conducted in St. Thomas church in this city. A requiem high mass was celebrated by the pastor, Rev. M. McNerney. Burial was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were Leo Shea, Robert Mulroney, Patrick Charles Jackman, Charles Spies, J. H. Kelly and Dr. F. X. Cretzmeyer. Bridget McCabe was born at Reading, Pennsylvania, March 1, 1857. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. McCabe, died when she was very young. When but nine years of age, with her sister, Mrs. J. T. Mulroney, she accompanied the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shea to the old town of Emmetsburg. This was in 1866. Here she lived under the most modest of circumstance until she reached young womanhood. She was united in marriage June 24, 1878, to Mr. John T. Laughlin, a son of Martin Laughlin, one of the first settlers. Later the family moved to Emmetsburg where they have since resided. Mr. Laughlin passed away in Emmetsburg November 26, 1898. Five sons and four daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Laughlin. All by one survive her. They are Robert of Mason City, Maurice of Des Moines and Joe, Jean and Lou Laughlin of this city, Mrs. Rene Hughes of Cherokee, Miss Claudia of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Mrs. Thos. Martin of this city. A daughter, Miss Cassie, passed away in 1900. A sister, Mrs. J. T. Mulroney of Emmetsburg, also survives. Miss Claudia is a registered nurse and has spent the past several weeks in Emmetsburg caring for her failing mother. All were present at the funeral. In the passing of Mrs. Laughlin, Emmetsburg and Palo Alto county loses one of its finest pioneer ladies. A resident of this place for 66 years, she saw and encouraged our community's growth almost from its very beginning. She knew only too well the many hardships the founders of our community had to bear in order that they might eke out an honorable living and in order that they might provide a few of the necessities of life. There were no luxuries for these pioneering ladies and gentlemen. But there was hospitality - far surpassing that of our day. Mrs. Laughlin was above all else a Christian lady. She was always ready to administer to those less fortunate than herself and she prided above all else her privilege to mould the lives of her deserving sons and daughters. Her works of charity were many and her kindness was greater than mere words. She was always active in the religious and social life of our community. Even in the twilight years of her useful life she kept abreast of the times and took an active part whenever her help was needed. Her absence from the home circle will be a great loss to those nearest and dearest to her. The Democrat joins with many others in our community in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved sons and daughters and to the loving sister and other relatives.
