Greehey Dead (June 2, 1893) He Breathed His Last Sunday Afternoon. Sunday evening scores of our citizens who had not heard of his illness were startled by the announcement that Mr. Wm. Greehey, of Great Oak, was dead. It seems that he had been sick about a week. But few knew of it. He had been steadily failing for some time and he feared that his life was fast drawing to a close. The funeral was held Monday morning. His remains rest in the Catholic cemetery. The deceased came to this county from Illinois about 24 years ago. In some respects he was among the most unfortunate of men. He was the father of a large family, but within fourteen years nine, including himself and wife, have passed away. Five of them died within a year or two. The great losses he met weighed heavily on his mind and for a long time his life was gloomy. He was about 64 years of age. A son and three daughters survive. The deceased was a plain, common, unpretentious man, but his life and character were such as to entitle him to the respect of all who knew him. Sincerity and integrity characterized him in all his dealings. His motives were good, his actions worthy, his life an open book. He was a man of unwavering friendship and he could always be depended upon to do what was right. He was a just, charitable, honorable man. The Democrat always knew him as a loyal friend and the writer sincerely regreted his death. (William and Mary had 4 sons and 7 daughters)

Posted on: PaloAlto County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/PaloAltoObits/591 Surname: Gardner, Carney ------------------------- Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, March 7, 1923 MRS. ROBT. CARNEY DIES AT AGE OF 93 She Was a Resident of Palo Alto County for 58 Years Mrs. Robert Carney, Sr., of this city, whose serious condition was reported in last week's Democrat, died on Thursday morning. The previous Sunday morning she received a stroke of paralysis. She never rallied. Her advanced years and worn down physical condition were against her. The funeral was held Saturday forenoon. Services were conducted at the Assumption church, Rev. L.J. Savage celebrating the requiem high mass. At the close he paid a high tribute to the worth of Mrs. Carney as an exemplary, Christian lady, as a patient, dutiful mother and as a useful and helpful member of society. All who heard his remarks were more than satisfied that his estimate of her worth as a woman was not overdrawn. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were six of her grandsons, R.J., F.J., E.F., Hugh, Leo and Joseph Carney. Numerous relatives and old neighbors were in attendance. Mary Gardner was born at Ennistimon, county of Clare, Ireland, in December, 1829. Her age was 93. When she was sixteen years old she came to the United States and settled at Cherryfield, Maine. Later she came to Oshkosh, Wisconsin. In November, 1857, she was united in marriage to Robert Carney. Mr. and Mrs. Carney came to Palo Alto county in 1865. They settled on the farm which is now the property of Mrs. William Molloy. It is situated in Great Oak township. Later they moved onto their place south of the old William O'Brien homestead where they resided for many years. In 1900 they came to this city, building a home in the Fourth ward a short distance east of the Assumption church. Mr. Carney passed away in 1903. Mrs. Carney is survived by four sons and one daughter. The sons are John J., Robert, William and James P. All live in this vicinity except Robert, who resides at Algona. The only daughter, Miss Mary Carney, made her home with her mother. There are twenty-three grandchildren and four great grand-children. For 58 years Mrs. Carney labored patiently and tirelessly and made numerous and costly sacrifices for the members of her household and for others with whom she came in contact in her regular duties. She often gave wise counsel and timely assistance to those about her. She was unusually humble and quiet. She was charitably inclined towards all but she made no display of her anxiety to lead a helpful, useful life and to do what she could for the betterment of society. The lofty aims and the substantial assurances of her faith always encouraged her in every serious undertaking in which she engaged. She was greatly attached to the teachings of her church, always regarded them as strengthening and uplifting in her trials and found them a source of abiding comfort in her declining years. She generally enjoyed health and strength and she lived to a ripe old age. The influence of this mild, lovable, exemplary Christian mother is well reflected in the lives of the four sons and the daughter who survive her. How consoling it must have been to her before the end came to realize that those whom she had trained and directed in childhood and in youth had turned to enduring benefit in her good example and the kindly admonitions she had so often given them. The surviving members of the family have the profound sympahty of the many who knew Mrs. Carney and who justly honored her for her many redeeming virtues. Posted on: PaloAlto County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/PaloAltoObits/589 Surname: Shea, Egan, Martin ------------------------- Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, March 9, 1921 MRS. WILLIAM SHEA CALLED TO REWARD She Was One of the Pioneer Teachers of Palo Alto County Mrs. William Shea passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.C. Egan, Monday evening after a rather brief illness, although she had been declining in health for several years. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock. Services will be conducted at the Assumption church. Rev. L.J. Savage will officiate. The burial will be in St. John's cemetery. Mary Ann Martin was born in the county of Dublin, Ireland, July 28, 1844. Her age was 76. When she was three years old her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Martin, came to the United States and located at New Jersey where they remained for three more years. In 1850 they moved west and settled in the vicinity of Shullsburgh, Wisconsin. It was in that locality that Miss Martin grew to womanhood. She received a good education and taught in her home community for several years. In 1871 Mr. and Mrs. Martin and their daughter came to Palo Alto county and settled on a farm in Great Oak township. Miss Martin taught school in this county a number of years. She was one of the pioneer workers in the school rooms of this section. She was capable, pleasing and successful and throughout her life her pupils were her fast friends. June 6, 1874, Miss Martin was united in marriage to William Shea. They lived in Nevada township for many years finally selling out and building a home in this city. Mr. Shea passed away a number of years ago. Mrs. Shea spent some time with her son Leo at Deer Lodge, Montana, but, her health failing, she returned to Emmetsburg and subsequently lived with her daughter, Mrs. C.C. Egan. She is survived by three sons and one daughter. The sons are attorney T.F. Shea of Billings, Montana, Joseph of the Twin Cities and Leo of Emmetsburg. The only daughter, Mrs. C.C. Egan of Great Oak township, is well known to our many local readers. A brother, J.S. Martin, resides in Emmetsburg and a brother, James Martin, and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Shea, live at Ayrshire. Mrs. Shea was a humble, amiable, warm hearted Christian woman. She was widely known for her cheery manner, her good nature, and her genuine, unaffected hospitality. She was always glad to speak well of her associates and neighbors and to be of substantial service to them when they needed her assistance. Her early experience in school work enabled her to take a special interest in many matters that were not of particular concern to some with whom she mingled. She was a practical, devoted member of her church. She always gave to religion the high place it should hold in the motives and the lives of a people. She was eager to make her home hapy and life agreeable to those about her. For fifty years she contributed liberally and willingly, by her sunny nature and her hopeful anticipations, to the elevating, strengthening social and Christian sentiment that has had such influence for good in the activities of the people of our community. All that is mortal of this worthy, honored Christian lady will soon be consigned to a quiet resting place in St. John's cemetery but her edifying example, her earnest admonitions and her kind, helpful deeds will long survive in the hearts of those who knew her well and who respected her for her womanly virtues. The sincere sympathy of all is extended to the three sons, the daughter, and the brothers and sister in their bereavement. A couple more news tidbits from a Scott Co, IA newspaper that are not particular to a county, but interesting to note! Daily Times Davenport, Scott, Iowa Aug 21, 1890 FACTS AND FANCIES It is estimated that abut 34,000,000 people die every year, or nearly sixty a minute. It is estimated $25,000,000 is spent annually in this country alone for advertising. The average width of a path of destruction with tornadoes is said to be little more than 1,000 feet. It is estimated that the number of passengers carried by all the railroads in the world averages 6,500,000 a day. The center of population of the United States is now at Madison, Ind., near the junction of the 39th parallel and the 55th meridian. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE LATEST IN LETTERS NEVER use a postal card. The colloquial style is by far the most agreeable while a didactic method of expression is unpleasant and to be avoided. In fashionable stationery the faintest shade of pink is the latest, there being a water mark of Cupid with his suggestive bow and arrow. A MARRIED woman's letters always should be addressed in the name of her husband, as "Mrs. Romaine Brown", instead of "Mrs. Amelia Brown" BLACK ink is the rule, although some women, notably those with romantic proclivities, affect violet ink, which, it must be admitted, flows easier and is of a superior to the ebony fluid. The angular English style of handwriting, although neither legible nor symmetrical; is one in high favor, the flowing Italian and the cramped French chirography being quite out of date. GOOD Sense and good taste should govern one's correspondence as it should all other things, and a man or woman of fine breeding, education, and heart will not go very far astray in the inditing of polite epistles. WOMEN should know better often sign themselves "Mrs. So-and-So" or "Miss So-and-So", instead of using their Christian names. This is the some of vulgarity, but if, when writing to a stranger, it is necessary to state whether Miss or Mrs., place the prefix in parentheses as "(Mrs.) Amelia Brown"

He had been over town and at work in his garden on Saturday, the day he was taken sick; and only a few had learned of his illness until the news of his death reached them. The funeral took place on Friday morning when a very large procession, including many of the old settlers of the county, followed the remains from the home of the deceased in the east part of town to the Catholic church where the last rites of the church were performed by Rev. M. J. Costello. The pall bearers were E. P. McEvoy, J. T. Mulroney, M. H. Crowley, James Dunigan, Thos. Kirby and M. F. Coonan. Mr. Nolan was born in Dunmore, Kilkenny county Ireland, in 1833. He came to America at the age of 21 and lived for one year at Brooklyn, New York. He then moved west and spent a year at Elgin, Illinois. That year he started for northwestern Iowa. In company with Thomas Maher, who took a homestead on what is now a part of the town site of Emmetsburg, he went by team from Elgin, Illinois to Iowa City, and from there they came to this place on foot. He was one of the small party of pioneers from Kane county, Ilinois, who came out in 1856. In the spring of that year a party of six consisting of Ed and Miles Mahan, James and John Nolan, Lot Laughlin, and John Neary reached here and settled along the river. Mr. Nolan and Mr. Maher came later the same year. In the spring of 1857 Mr. Nolan was married at Fort Dodge to Johanna Conway, a sister of Mrs. John Nolan, and for forty years he lived on the old farm on the east side of the river, a short distance north of the old town site. This homestead is one of the historic spots of the county - always known to the early settlers and to travelers for its open-hearted hospitalty. The old settlers and the young people of thirty years ago can tell of many a pleasant evening spent at the home of "Pat in the Bush". Of the three children born to Mr. and Mrs. Nolan, two died of diptheria - one boy and one girl. The surviving son, M. J. Nolan, lives in the comfortable home on the east side where his father died. Mr. Nolan was for many years one of the leading and most successful farmers in the county. He purchased and fed a large number of cattle and employed several laborers during the entire year. However, later he met with some business reverses and retired several years ago and came to this city to spend his remaining days. He was a frank, outspoken, open hearted old gentleman and was when he had ample means a generous contributer to all worthy public enterprises. He gave willingly a helping hand to many a needy pioneer and furnished him food and shelter beneath his humble roof when there was no Emmetsburg and when stopping places were few and far between. His name and his praiseworthy deeds will often be recalled by those who knew him as a friend, benefactor, and upright citizen.
