Posted on: PaloAlto County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/PaloAltoObits/634 Surname: Laughlin, Kane, Ryan ------------------------- Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, March 9, 1927 The Funeral of Will Laughlin Large Attendance. Member of One of the Best Pioneer Families of County. The funeral of Wm. Laughlin, who was killed Tuesday evening of last week, a complete report of which appeared in the Democrat, was held last Saturday. Services were conducted in the Assumption church to which the family belonged for 55 years or more. A requiem high mass was celebrated by the pastor, Very Rev. J.G. Murtagh. He spoke with much feeling concerning the tragedy. While he deplored the unprovoked murder, he hoped that bitterness would not be aroused or resentment shown towards the relatives of the young man who had committed the deed. He advised his people to stand at all times for peace and law and order and to leave the adjustment of criminal affairs to our courts and public authorities. His sentiments were given the earnest approval of all who had heard him. Several of the relatives of Blake McMacken were present. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. There was an unusually large attendance of relatives and friends. Graettinger was largely represented as the old Laughlin home is not far from that place. The pall bearers were Joseph Mulroney, Alex Cullen, T.F. Rutledge, Bert Ryan, James Burns and John Nolan. William Laughlin, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lott Laughlin, was born in Walnut township, January 5, 1879. His age was 48. He was educated in the school of his home neighborhood. While his opportunities in this respect were fairly limited, he was known as an exceptionally brilliant mathematician. Several of his teachers commented on his success in this particular after learning of the sad tragedy. Attaining the years of manhood, he subsequently spent his life in Emmetsburg and vicinity. He once conducted a meat market and he bought live stock for many years, making his home with his parents, and, after they died, with his sister, Mrs. William Kane. He served on the city council for several terms. His death is mourned by three brothers and three sisters. The brothers are Martin, well known at Graettinger, Lott, who is engaged in business at Shreveport, Louisiana, and P.J., who has a good position in the Denver National Bank. The sisters are Mrs. W.T. Kane of Emmetsburg, Mrs. M.F. Ryan of Mobridge, South Dakota, and Miss Rose Laughlin, who is supervisor of the C.M. & St. P. hospital at Mobridge. All were present at the obsequies. Mr. Laughlin was a quiet, unpretentious, clean living gentleman and he enjoyed the good will and the warm esteem of all who knew him. The members of the family were among the most respected and honored in the history of our county. Will's grandmother, Mrs. Martin Laughlin, cooked the first meal that was served for the members of the old Irish colony, which located north west of this city in 1856. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lott Laughlin, were as conscientious, upright, honorable people as any in Iowa. Will would be the last man in our county to participate in a dispute of any kind or to become aggravated. In this respect he was very much like his father. He would never trespass on the rights of others nor cast nay refelction on a fellow citizen. He was very kind to little children and especially to the small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kane with whom he made his home. He met a very sad death. Those who knew him from early childhood do not think for a moment that he did anything to provoke the awful crime that was committed. The sorrowing survivers have the heartfelt sympathy of our many citizens in their bereavement. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, March 9, 1927 Not Much Doing in District Court The grand jury has for several days been considering the charges against Blake McMacken for the murder of Will Boblit and Will Laughlin Tuesday night of last week. Posted on: PaloAlto County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/PaloAltoObits/633 Surname: Joyce, Kane, Brennan, Hoben, Joynt, Aylward ------------------------- Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Thursday, June 21, 1928 Mrs. Chas. Kane Dies of Injuries Burial Today Mrs. Chas. R. Kane, whose serious injury in an auto collision at the Crippen corner was published in the Democrat two weeks ago, died at her home in Emmetsburg township Monday evening. For several days her condition was not considered particularly serious but the first of the week she took a change for the worse and death finally relieved her from her sufferings. The funeral was held this forenoon. Services were conducted in St. Thomas church to which she belonged, Very Rev J.G. Murtagh officiating in a requiem high mass. There was an unusually large attendance of relatives and friends. Many came from distant and neighboring places to be present at the obsequies. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were Douglas Brennan, Leo Joyce, Edward Joyce, Harold Bradley, Joe Donahue, and Len Sherlock. Clara Ellen Joyce, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Joyce, who were pioneers in this county, was born in Emmetsburg township November 12, 1888. She attended the local schools and subsequently made her home with her mother, her father having passed away when she was quite small. She was united in marriage to Charles R Kane, February 7, 1912. She leaves her fond husband, two sons and three daughters. They are Marie, 15; John, 13; Paul, 9; Agnes, 7; and Dorothy 3. Mrs. Kane's death is also mourned by her mother, Mrs. M.T. Joyce and nine brothers and sisters-John, James, Thomas, Edward and Joe, Mrs. M.W. Brennan, Mrs. T.A. Hoben and Mrs. Joe Joynt, all of this county and Mrs. Aylward of De Graff, Minnesota. All were present at the funeral. The death of Mrs. Kane is very distressing to her devoted husband, family and friends. She leaves to mourn her irreparable loss a small family of boys and girls at ages when they most need a mother's solicitous, loving care and watchful attention. She had, at her age, everything for which to make the greatest of personal sacrifices. She grew up a community favorite and she was from early childhood endeared to the many who mingled with her and prized her many virtues. She was a sensible, pratical helpmeet and a capable, zealous head of a happy household. She was known as an honored, useful member of a pioneer neighborhood. However, when death comes the brightest of hopes are shattered and the fondest of ties broken. They can never be restored. No one can fathom the mysterious ways of the Omnipotent. The passing of Mrs. Kane is widely and sincerely mourned by all who know her. The surviving members of the family have the profound sympathy of all in the days of sadness that has come to them. Posted on: PaloAlto County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/PaloAltoObits/630 Surname: Nestor, Donahue, Murphy, Mulry, Knoll ------------------------- Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Thursday, May 31, 1928 Dr. Rob J Nestor of Waterloo Dead Passed Away in Sanitarium at Battle Creek, Michigan. Interment at Waterloo Saturday Tuesday evening Mrs. James Donahue of Emmetsburg township received the sad news that her brother, Dr. R.J. Nestor of Waterloo, had passed away in a sanitarium at Battle Creek, Michigan. She knew that he had not been feeling well for some time but had no idea that his condition was so serious. She will leave for Waterloo tomorrow to attend the funeral, which will be held in one of the Catholic churches of that city. Dr. Nestor spent his boyhood and early manhood years in this community. His people were pioneers. He attended the local schools and when he grew to manhood he taught for a few years. He was capable, energetic and successful. Later he entered a medical college and finished with high hopes. He practiced at Hudson, this state, for a number of years, after which he located in Waterloo. He enjoyed a fine patronage and he became prosperous. He was married at Waterloo in 1901. We have not learned the name of Mrs. Nestor before marriage. Some time later Dr. and Mrs. Nestor took a trip to Europe where the Doctor spent a year or two specializing in the high class medical institutions of Vienna, Austria, and Heidelberg, Germany. Hence he had the best of opportunities to win his way to the front in his profession. He is survived by his beloved wife, two brothers and three sisters. The brothers are Lawrence Murphy of Bonesteel, S.D., and Joseph Nestor, who lives in Oklahoma. The sisters are Mrs. T.J. Mulry of Chicago, Mrs. James Donahue of this community and Mrs. C.S. Knoll of Alberta, Minnesota. The writer knew Dr. Nestor for more than 42 years and had occasion to entertain the highest respect for him. He was a polished, modest gentleman and he had a pleasing personality. He was upright and courteous and he retained through life the friendship of those whose good will he gained in earlier years. We learn with profound sorrow of his passing and we offer heartfelt sympathy to the surviving relatives. Posted on: PaloAlto County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/PaloAltoObits/629 Surname: Currans, Brennan ------------------------- Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wed., Jan 19, 1927 One Child Dead Second Very Ill Spinal Meningitis Afflicts the Family of Mrs. Alice Currans at Home of M.F. Brennan Monday evening Martin Thomas, the second son of Mrs. Alice Currans of this city, died of spinal meningitis. He became ill Sunday shortly before the noon hour. His only brother, Donald, aged 11, is at present very low with the same ailment and his chances for recovery are not at all encouraging. The family are quarantined at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M.F. Brennan where they live. Last evening Martin T. was buried in St. John's cemetery. The funeral was held under the state board of health regulations. While many drove to the cemetery they could not visit the home or view the body. The attending nurse, Miss Agnes Kinsella, has charge of Donald. Conditions are, of course, very unpleasant for Mrs. Currans and Mr. and Mrs. Brennan, as their many relatives and friends are powerless to show them the usual attention under such sad circumstances. Dr. Robert Powers, the attending physician, has some hope that Donald may recover, but it is impossible to predict the outcome. Martin T. was nine years old August 21. He attended St. Mary's Academy all last week and was down town Saturday evening. His brother Donald was about as usual. He became ill Sunday afternoon. Martin was a bright, lively, plucky little fellow and his mother and grandparents always found him obedient, kind and truly sympathetic. He was good natured and jolly and willing to do his part in school and when playing with his companions. His death is a very severe blow to his mother and to his grandparents, who were greatly attached to him. They have the sympathy of the people of our county in their trying affliction. It is sincerely hoped that Donald, a very promising boy, may recover his health and strength and survive to be a comfort to his mother and grandparents. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Descendants of Alice Rose Brennan 1 Alice Rose Brennan b: 11/1888 in Emmetsburg, Iowa src: 1900 Census-Palo Alto Co. / . +Thomas Patrick Currans b: Abt. 1885 in Ruthven,Iowa m: Abt. 06/03/1914 in Emmetsburg,Iowa / ........ 2 Donald Currans b: Bet. 1915 - 1916 / ............ +Mildred Hetland / ........ 2 Martin Thomas Currans b: 08/21/1917 in Ruthven, Palo Alto, Iowa src: Palo Alto Co. Posted on: PaloAlto County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/PaloAltoObits/627 Surname: Nally, Nicholson, Anderson, Collins ------------------------- Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Thursday, May 3, 1928 P.J. Nally Passes Burial Tuesday Colony of 1856. Lived in Community for 40 Years. Was Recently Paralyzed. P.J. Nally, whose condition was mentioned in the last issue of the Democrat, died at his home in this city last Saturday night. He suffered a stroke of paralysis Wednesday, another the following day and a third Saturday. He never regained consciousness. The funeral was held Tuesday morning. Services were conducted in the Assumption church, the rector, Rev. J.G. Murtagh officiating. Father Murtagh spoke at some length of man's helplessness in many ways. From early childhood until death he is constantly in need of God's guidance and assistance. He is taught his religious duties by the aid of divine revelation and the teachings of Christ who made the supreme sacrifice on the cross that all might attain eternal salvation. The good pastor found Mr. Nally strongly attached to his faith and eager to comply with his religious obligations. The burial was in the family lot in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were Wm. H.J. Steiner, John J. Steil, W.I. Brannagan, Joe Mulroney, W.T. McNally and David Joynt. A large number of old friends were in attendance. Patrick Joseph Nally, son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Nally, was born in the county of Galway, Ireland, March 17, 1866. His age was 62. When he was 16 he came to the United States. He was in the employ of M.F. Kerwick as a tradesman for many years. Some time ago he engaged in business for himself. He was married in this city August 14, 1888 to Miss Jane Nicholson. Two sons and two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Nally. All survive. They are Mrs. M.T. Anderson of Fremont, Nebraska, W.H. of New York City, R.J. of Chicago and Miss Veronica, who has been living at Omaha. Mrs. Nally passed away in this city two years ago. Mr. Nally's death is also mourned by one sister-Mrs. P.J. Collins of Emmetsburg, and by three brothers-James and Thomas of Emmetsburg and Ed of Kansas City. The writer knew Mr. Nally for more than 40 years and always found him genial, ready, friendly and off handed. He kept well posted on general affairs. He was a capable worker and he had long and exacting experience as a tradesman. He was a loving father and his zeal for the welfare of his sons and his daughters was warmly reciprocated by them. They grew useful and honorable members of society and all are taking successfully and with honor their places in business and social affairs. Mr. and Mrs. Nally both passed away at a comparatively early age in life. It must have been comforting to them as death called them from their earthly scenes to realize that those whom they were leaving were so well prepared to push onward in life's journey without their guidance or assistance. They have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their sorrow. Link: Palo Alto County, Iowa USGenWeb Project URL: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapaloal/paloalto.htm>

Never Regained Consciousness. Funeral Today. Ray Joynt, who lived a few miles west of Emmetsburg, was so seriously injured Tuesday afternoon while bringing home a couple of horses from the Hugh Mackey sale, that he died a couple of hours later. he and Mrs. Joynt and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Donahue drove to the Mackey home and, in returning home, the gentlemen were leading the horses. They had not been full broken. On reaching Union grade, Ray decided that he would ride his horse. He tried to mount the animal but was thrown onto his hunkers. He had the rope in his hand. The horse lunged backwards and Mr. Joynt was thrown onto his back, the base of his skull hitting a hard chunk of ground. Mr. Donahue, who was ahead with the other horse, picked him up and found that his condition was serious. In a few moments, Earl Brown and John Allen happened along in an auto and brought the suffering man to Dr. Cretzmeyer's office. Upon examination the Doctor requested that he be taken to his home at once. He examined him hastily but did not consider him in a particularly serious condition. Later he was summoned, but, on reaching the Joynt home, learned that Ray was dead. The funeral was held this forenoon. Services were conducted in St. Thomas church. Father McNerney officiating in a solemn requiem high mass. He was assisted by Father Murtagh and Father Kelly. There was a large attendance of relatives and neighbors. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were Len Sherlock, Joe Donahue, Andrew Grace, Chas. Kane, John Bough and Verne Ball. Raymond D Joynt, the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Joynt, was born in Emmetsburg township February 11, 1892. He was within a few days of 36 years of age. He attended the local schools and grew to manhood in his home community. He was married at minneapolis January 12, 1914, to Miss Nellie Donovan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Donovan. Mr. and Mrs. Joynt subsequently made their home on their fine farm west of Emmetsburg. Mr. Joynt's death is mourned by Mrs. Joynt and three sons-Richard, 10, Dan, 9, and Gerald, 8. There are five brothers and seven sisters. The brothers are John and Joe of Spencer, Charles of Algona, and David and Thomas of Emmetsburg. The sisters are Mrs. Chas. Slagle of Cylinder, Mrs. Joe Heisler and Mrs. Gus Heisler of Farley, Mrs. Robert Kinsella of Emmetsburg, Sisters Mary Joseph and Mary Thomas of Chicago and Sister Mary Ambrose of Los Angeles. A sister, Miss Winnie [Kane], died a number of years ago. Mr. Joynt was the youngest of the family of 14 sons and daughters. Their true worthiness as members of society was recognized in the various communities in which they resided. Ray was a quiet, modest, frugal, industrious, dependable young man. He was a princely Christian gentleman. He built a fine home for his wife and loved ones and he heartily enjoyed it with them. Providence had given them health and strength. They were in comfortable circumstances and their future was more than hopeful. Neighbors respected and honored them and confided in them. Mr. Joynt's unusually sad taking off is hard indeed on Mrs. Joynt's and their three bright, hearty boys as well as to the large family of brothers and sisters, now grown up men and women. General and profound sympathy goes out to them in the gloomy hours that have come to them. Link: Palo Alto County, Iowa USGenWeb Project URL: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapaloal/paloalto.htm>

Posted on: PaloAlto County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/PaloAltoObits/625 Surname: Carmody, Boland, Neville ------------------------- Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, July 20, 1921 MRS. THOS. CARMODY DIES AT AGE OF 91 She Came to Palo Alto in 1882. Funeral Was Held Thursday. Last week we made brief mention of the death of Mrs. Ellen Carmody which occurred at her home in Chicago on Monday at 9:55 p.m. She was very ill for twelve weeks. The remains reached Emmetsburg early Wednesday morning and were taken to the home of her son, James Carmody. The funeral was held Thursday forenoon. Services were conducted at the Assumption church. Monsignor P.F. Farrelly celebrating a requiem high mass. Many old neighbors and friends were in attendance. The burial was in the family lot in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were M.F. Brennan, E.J. Higgins, J.T. Maguire, John O'Brien, Frank Hand and W.I. Branagan. Ellen Boland was born in the parish of Capamore, county of Limerick, Ireland, March 28, 1830. Her age was 91. She was educated in the Tower Hill National school. She came to the United States in April 1850. June 28, 1852, she was united in marriage at Lyons, New York to Thomas Carmody. Mr. and Mrs. Carmody came to Great Oak township, Palo Alto County in 1882. Mr. Carmody died June 2, 1896. Mrs. Carmody moved to Emmetsburg in 1898. She and her daughter, Miss Nellie, lived in a home in the Third ward. In 1916, they moved to Chicago where they subsequently resided. Mrs. Carmody is survived by two sons and two daughters. They are James Carmody of this city, Mrs. Nellie Neville of St. Louis, Missouri, Miss Nellie Carmody and Thomas Carmody, who is a cashier of the Whittemore State bank. All were present at the funeral. Mrs. Carmody had twenty grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Carmody was a woman of deep earnestness and she took an active interest in all matters that she had the privilege and the time to consider. Her career of almost a century was marked by faithful, tireless, conscientious devotion to what she believed to be right and by the strict observance of the precepts of her holy church. Her sympathies, like most of the women of her race, were with the afflicted and downtrodden. She knew well the sad history of the land of her birth and she was anxious to learn of the success of the movement for independence before she would be called upon to answer the final summons. This privilege, however, was denied her. She was a solicitous, provident mother and her zeal for the welfare of the members of her household was equalled only by her tireless efforts to give them the best opportunities that her means could afford. She was warm hearted, friendly and neighborly and she enjoyed through life the good will and the sympathy in her various undertakings of those who were close to her socially and in general community affairs. While she had the loyal, the heartfelt affection of her two sons and daughters, circumstances were such that her youngest daughter, Miss Nellie, was required to give special attention, in her declining years, to her physical and other home comforts. No daughter ever gave more unselfishly years of patient devotion to the many needs of an aged parent, and none will, we are sure, treasure fondly the memory of a sacrifice more nobly or more unselfishly performed. The surviving members of the family, whom we have during our long residence in Emmetsburg counted among our warm personal friends, have our sincere sympathy in the sorrow that has come to them.
