V. Nolan, 81, a former Palo Alto county sheriff, a former Emmetsburg hardware merchant and one of the pioneers of Palo Alto county, died suddenly at his home in the south part of this city Saturday afternoon, evidently the result of a heart attack. Mr. Nolan had, in company with his daughter, Mrs. Bessie Gundert, visited the downtown business section during the afternoon. They made the trip by car, Mr. Nolan deciding that he would visit the office of a local physician for a physical checkup. He later returned to his home with Mrs. Gundert. Mrs. Gundert returned to the business section to do some shopping and when she came back to the house she found Mr. Nolan lying on the floor between the kitchen and the dining room. He was dead when discovered. The funeral was held Tuesday morning. Services were conducted in the Assumption church by the substitute pastor, Rev. Father Theophane of Des Moines. Father Leo McEvoy of Ruthven, a close friend of the Nolan family, preached a very impressive sermon. Burial was in St. John's cemetery. The active pallbearers were John Nolan, T. C. Nolan, James Nolan, Wm. Nolan, Dan Greene, P. C. Jackman, John Steil and Martin Mimbach. Honorary pallbearers were J. B. McEvoy, Jos. P. Hand, J. D. Higgins, Jos. Laughlin, Mike Fleming, K. J. McElroy, Thos. Rutledge, Ed McNally, Lou Phillips, E. B. Soper, E. H. Soper, A. J. Burt, Roy Weir, Wm. Thompson, John Brennan and Mike McCarty. The Knights of Columbus attended the funeral in a body. The Foy Funeral home was in charge of funeral arrangements. Patrick Valentine Nolan was born in the state of New York on February 14, 1858. He was the son of the late John and Bridget Nolan. When he was a small boy the family came to Iowa and settled on a farm along the shores of Medium Lake, north of this city. Mr. Nolan received his education in the local schools. While yet a young man P. V. Nolan entered into the hardware business. He spent some time in this business at Ruthven where he was associated with the late J. F. and P. J. Nolan. Mr. Nolan later established himself in the hardware business in Emmetsburg. For some time he was engaged in a partnership with Fred Engler. This partnership continued for some time, Mr. Nolan finally selling out his interest. For some time Mr. Nolan served as sheriff of Palo Alto county. The late John McNally was his deputy. Mr. Nolan was united in marriage on January 23, 1888, to Miss Mary E. White. The ceremony was performed by the late Very Rev. J. J. Smith. Mrs. Nolan passed away in Emmetsburg on February 23, 1927. The deceased is mourned by two daughters, Mrs. Bessie Gundert of this city and Mrs. Dan Greene of Ruthven. There are numerous other relatives. After Mr. Nolan retired from the political and business life of our city he continued as an active citizen in this community. He was a member of the board of directors of the old First National Bank. He frequently visited various business houses in Emmetsburg where he kept in constant touch with general business affairs. His judgment in financial and business matters was often sought as he was considered in various circles as a competent observer and a gentleman of excellent business judgment. The following tribute written by his nephew, Att'y James E. Fay of this city, has been handed to the Democrat for publication. It expresses affection and respect which Mr. Nolan was accorded during his lifetime in Emmetsburg. In the death of P. V. Nolan one of its familiar and beloved figures is taken from the life of Emmetsburg. To know him was to admire him for his many outstanding qualitites of mind and heart. He was one of the most charitable of men, both in word and deed. Countless acts of helpfulnesss and aid throughout the years were by him given to those less fortunate than he yet done so quietly that no one knew thereof. Although financially successful himself, he cared not for artificial living but was supremely happy in his own home surrrounded by family and friends. Since the death of Mrs. Nolan 12 years ago, every loving care and attention was showered upon his daughter, Mrs. Bessie Gundert. Possessed of a brilliantly analytical mind, he was well versed on current questions of the day and to the last retained his physical and mental vigor. He loved young people and the presence of countless little tots grieving at his bier was a touching tribute to the kindly soul of a good man. With all of the changes he had seen in his 81 years of life, he still remained keenly interested and progressive. He had mastered the art of growing old gracefully. He died as he would have liked, quietly and without burden to anyone, with spotless character strengthened by his Faith, and unafraid of the tomorrow. Of such was the pioneer stock from which he came, people who uncomplainingly endured countless hardships that life might be carved out for us who followed. Such men leave an epitaph of work well done, far greater than any eulogy may proclaim.

Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wed., May 14, 1924 Trying P.J. CLAER Case Judge COYLE, who was under the weather for several weeks, is at present holding court at Spencer. Several important cases are up for his consideration. Among them is the criminal action against Fred WAGGONER, who at the point of a revolver, compelled P.J. CLAER to write him out a $2,400 check last fall. George HEALD is assisting the county attorney in prosecuting and Wilson CORNWALL is defending Mr. WAGGONER. Another important suit is that of C.F. CONRAD against S.W. and Anna F. SCOTHORN. He is asking the foreclosure of a $50,000 mortgage on a half section farm. He claims that since the deal was made he paid $3,600 in taxes on the property. Sugar Beet Force Arriving The last of the week fifteen Russians arrived to work in the local sugar beet fields. Seven more families will come this week. A family has been stationed on the Ora GREEN farm and one at Mr. WENGER's. Two families went to Ringsted. There have also been arrivals at Cylinder and Rodman. A large number of fields of sugar beets will be planted in Palo Alto this year. The industry is one to be encouraged. Edward McDONALD Dead We regret to learn that Edward McDONALD, one of the fine old gentlemen of Silver Lake township, died a few days ago but we have not learned particulars. We hope to be able to secure them for next week. Our City Marshal is 71. A few evenings ago Mr. and Mrs. M.F. BRENNAN were surprised by a number of their friends, the occasion being Mr. BRENNAN's 71st birthday. Cards were enjoyed for a few hours after which a delicious luncheon was served. There are no more hospitable people in Emmetsburg than Mr. and Mrs. BRENNAN. All who were present will remember with pleasure the evening's gathering. He Plants Corn Early W.E. JACKMAN had 90 acres of corn in the ground before the late cold spell. He generally plants early and he very seldom has to replant. However, he thinks that corn put in about May 20, is as a rule, as good as any that is raised. Cathy Joynt Labath Palo Alto Co, IA USGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapaloal/paloalto.htm
Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, Feb. 27, 1924 CHALLENGE P.J. CLAER TO DUEL Former Ayrshire Man has Thrilling Experience at Spencer (News-Herald) Fred. D. WAGGONER, well known farmer living a mile east of Gillett Grove furnished considerable excitement in the office of CLAER & DYER, real estate and insurance, Monday noon that included threats with a gun, according to member of the firm. Frist challenging P.J. CLAER to a "battle" and offering him a second gun, he forced Mr. CLAER to write him a check for $2,480 and took it away with him when the real estate man refused to take the gun. A warrant was issued Monday afternoon for WAGGONER's arrest, and he was taken that evening at his home by County Sheriff John M LINDMAN and Deputy Frank SMITH. Before Justice of the Peace H.T. McLANE he entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of robbery and waived a preliminary hearing. He was bound over to the grand jury at the March term of Clay county district court. His bonds were fixed at $1,000 and he was released when his bonds were signed by L.A. WITTER, Gillett Grove and Greenville banker. The drawing of guns and taking the check is said to be an aftermath of the sale of the Jim HANSEN farm near Gillett Grove several years ago. CLAER & DYER had the farm on contract, sold it to WAGGONER and when another place south of Gillett Grove went back to its original owner, the HANSEN place did likewise. Mr. WAGGONER is said to have lost his first payment, around $5,000. ~~~~~~~ Several Republican Candidates We understand that Attorney J.W. FAY is a candidate for the republican nomination for county attorney, that Ed THOMPSON is an aspirant for clerk and that Alela VEDDER, Mrs. Anna SPOHN,and Mrs. SORENSON are in the field for county recorder. ~~~~~~~~~ Simon LYNCH informs us that his brother, Ed, who made such a great record in athletics at Dartmouth, is at present in the employ of a large bonding house in Minneapolis. he was line coach at Dartmouth for a year after his graduation but he felt that his present position offered more of a future to him. Sorry, I posted some Scott co, IA newspaper info to the Palo Alto list by mistake! Pardon me! Cathy
The Times Davenport, Scott, Iowa Friday, Oct 10, 1890 A Correction The article regarding Lester CROOK, which appeared in THE TIMES a few days since, in which it was alleged that he had knocked down a woman employed in the same establishment with him, and with whom he had a disagreement, seems, in the light of a fuller statement of facts since presented to us, to have been more emphatic than the matter required. Upon a closer investigation into the affair, coupled with the statement of on-lookers, we learn that Mr. Crook did not knock down or call names the woman in question, and while regretting that it was the medium of doing the young man an unintentional injustice, THE TIMES willingly gives Mr. CROOK's version of the affair, in order that he may be set right before the public. It is not the policy of this paper to willfully distort or misrepresent the facts in any manner, and finding itself imposed upon in any way, THE TIMES will cheerfully make amends, as in the case of Mr. CROOK, who, by the way, is well spoken of by his employer. OBITUARY Riepe To-day at 12 o'clock noon, Professor William RIEPE passed away from this vale of tears to that great unknown. The late deceased was living with his son, Adelbert, on Second street, below Ripley. Funeral notice will be given later on. Prof. RIEPE was born Nov. 16, 1816, at Haspe, near Iserlohn, Westphalia. Graduated from the normal school at Iserlohn, attended the university at Berlin, and was a teacher for a number of years. He participated in the revolution of 1848, and with many others, was compelled to leave the country. In 1850 he settled at Cleveland, Ohio, and after a few years removed to Baltimore, where he was several years engaged in teaching. In 1857 he came to Davenport, where he has since been well known as an active instructor. He was in charge of the German instruction in the city schools for some years and served with great success. He was for some time conductor of the Thalia Musical Society. He was one of the half dozen who organized the Davenport Academy of Natural Sciences; was always a member of the board of trustees and an active, earnest working member to the day of his death, and will be greatly missed in their councils. He was a man of the most tender sympathies, kind-hearted and unselfish, ever ready to do an act of kindness, and a most affectionate man in his own family. He leaves a wife and one son, Adelbert, a druggist, and two daughters, Mrs. Melanie WEYMANN now of New York, who will be here Saturday evening, and a younger daughter, Clara, at home. SCHNITGER The home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry SCHNITGER, 1301 East From street, is darkened by the shadow of death. Their little son, Richard Benton, died yesterday, after an illness of 10 days, of dysentery. He was 22 months of age, and the only son. The funeral service will be held from the family residence to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Resolutions of Respect At the regular meeting of Davenport Lodge No. 441, I.O.G.T., held Oct. 1, 1890, the following resolutions were adopted: WHEREAS, An all-wise Providence has taken from our midst our friend and brother, J.H. CARTER, who departed this life on the 23d day of September 1890, and WHEREAS, In his death this lodge has lost one of its most honored members, and one who to know was to love and respect, Therefore be it RESOLVED, That we tender to the family of our deceased brother our heartfelt sympathy and condolence in their hour of sorrow. RESOLVED, That the charter of the lodge be draped in mourning for the period of thirty days, and further RESOLVED, That a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the records of the lodge, a copy sent under seal of the lodge to the bereaved family, and also that the city papers be requested to publish the same. J.H. DOXSEE, Mrs. Emma DALY, Mrs. Sylvia QUEEN. Committee. Of Interest to Cigarette Smokers The main reason why the cigarette obtains so fatal a power over young men is because of the opium in it. The little paper roll seems to soothe, when in fact it is paralyzing the very forces of life. A confirmed cigarette smoker shows the appearance and actions of the opium eater. Misery, insanity or death, one or the other, is sure to result. Such are some of the recent occurrences connected with the dangerous habit. A dozen boys made insane by cigarette smoking have within a short time been confined in the Napa (Cal.) hospital for the insane. Walter FLETCHER died at Louisville the other day of cigarette poisoning. The brightest boy in his class, he began a year ago to smoke, and had been smoking from fifty to sixty a day. he was striken down with heart disease, directly brought on by smoking. A boy of sixteen died in Philadelphia. His habit was to smoke twenty a day. A post mortem showed that death was due to congestion of the brain from cigarette poison. A fine young man of Troy drops dead. After his death one of his veins burst-the blood was as black as ink. Several physicians said it was cigarette poisoning. We respectfully present the above facts to the consideration of the young men of Davenport who are addicted to this pernicious habit.
