    1. Re: [IAPALOAL] Emmetsburg Democrat; Palo Alto, Iowa; Nov 11, 1911
    2. Dear Cathy & List, <Marriage license for C.A. WENNEL and Miss Ida Ross?> Could there be a mistake in the above news from 20 years ago in the Emmetsburg Democrat? That would be 1891. I have been searching for several years for verification of my Grandmother Ida Ross' marriage to Henry J. Emrich. They were residents of Ayrshire for over 35 years. It is believed they were married in Ayrshire. Thanks, Mary Jo McQueen

    3. Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1911 NEWS OF TWENTY YEARS AGO A Few Items Taken From The Files of the Democrat of October 28, 1891 D.W. BURLINGAME is quite ill at Tipton. Mrs. VANDERYITE of Curlew died last Friday night. A. LARSON has bought the T. KINKADE meat market at Mallard. Wm. KELLY of Booth Township has sold his farm to John LEE. Friday Bert KINGSLEY was called to attend the funeral of his mother. J.S. ROBINSON has withdrawn as an independent candidate for sheriff. Dr. BALDWIN has 16 cases of typhoid fever at Ruthven. He has had 36. John McGRATH of Wyoming territory is visiting his mother north of town. A large addition to the Ayrshire school house will commence at once. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs. Joseph MIHLFREAD of Mallard, Sunday, October 25. Phil DUFFY has the material on the ground and will erect a new livery barn at Mallard. J.J. McGRATH will have a public sale on his farm north of Emmetsburg, Saturday, November 7. Mr. and Mrs. W.I. BRANAGAN's little daughter Geretta died Sunday morning aged nine months. Mr. J.P. CONWAY and Miss Mary LOWRY were married at Assumption church Tuesday morning. Six horses have been stolen from farmers between Bancroft and Emmetsburg during the past ten days. John HERLEY died at Spencer Tuesday evening of last week. He formerly lived in Emmetsburg township. Charles HAHN of Mallard has built a new barn. Mr. JUNE of the same neighborhood has also built a barn. Mr. Dennis McSWEENEY and Miss Mary J. MAHER were married at Assumption church Tuesday morning. Mrs. T.M. DANIELS died at her home at West Bend last Thursday evening. She leaves a husband and three small children. P.J. NOLAN has rented the old post office building at Ruthven to Miss Mary GORMAN who will occupy it as a millinery store. Friday morning Sister Mary Angelica died at St. Mary's Academy. She came from Kansas City two weeks ago for the benefit of her health. A large number from this city accompanied by the Juneville band went to West Bend Wednesday evening to attend the Governor BOLES meeting. Marriage licenses have been issued to C.T. ALLEN and Miss Mary A HEMSTREAT, C.A. WENNEL and Miss Ida ROSS, Andrew BENSON and Miss Ida NEWMAN. J.R. SOVEREIGN, commissioner of labor statistics for Iowa, will address the citizens of West Bend next Thursday evening on the political issues of the day. Word reaches this city from Fort Dodge that Miss Ella FOLEY, who was primary teacher in our public schools for some time, is to be married this week to a prominent merchant of that place. We have not learned his name. Friday morning a young man named WARD of Spencer went to O'NEILL & BRANAGAN's livery barn and hired a team to drive seven miles in the country. He went as far as Welcome, Minnesota, where he tried to dispose of the horses and buggy, but he was unable to do so. He then placed the team in a barn at that place and skipped. Mr. BRANAGAN was notified by the Welcome livery man that the team was there. He left at once for Welcome and drove them home. Young WARD, it seems, had been working at the Early hotel at Spencer. He stole $50 from the till before coming to Emmetsburg. Cathy Joynt Labath Palo Alto Co, Iowa USGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapaloal/paloalto.htm

    3. Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, Aug 27, 1913 One of our exchanges says that hogs are now so high that when they die their obituary notices are telegraphed far and wide. A few people give more attention to their hogs than they do their children. We understand that L.E. RICHARDSON, who is at present living northeast of Graettinger, has thirty acres of excellent potatoes this year. He was recently offered $1,500 for his crop as it stands on the ground. There was a big picnic at Clare a few days ago and Brother DALTON of the Manson Democrat was the orator. It is needless to say that he gave a rousing address and that he kept his listener's in the best humor. The members of the A.O.H. gave a most delightful dancing party at the K.C. hall Thursday evening. The Star orchestra played. Those who were in attendance report that they had one of the most enjoyable times of the year. J.W. COOPER, the Rock Island agent at Marble Rock, is under arrest at Mason City on the charge of embezzlement. It is claimed that he has $800 of the company's money. Elmer STEIL of this city has for some time been assistant in the office at Marble Rock. Eugene MULRONEY and P.F. CONLON have opened a real estate office in the first building east of McCARTY & McCARTY's law office. They have already made a number of purchases and sales. Both are shrewd, energetic, deserving gentlemen. The Democrat hope they will make a barrel of money out of their undertaking. The daily newspapers report that thousands of fragments of the meteor that passed over northern Iowa a short time ago were recently found in a field near Albert Lea, Minnesota. They are from one-half to six inches long and are scattered through the field for a distance of a mile or more. The material is rock and is very dark in color. J.B. JOLLIFFE recently sold his fine quarter section farm southeast of Mallard to T.R. WILSON, the butter maker at the Mallard creamery. The consideration was $125 per acre. Mr. JOLLIFFE owns another quarter section adjoining the place. He will erect a set of buildings on it during the fall. He is one of the older settlers of that locality. The Rolfe Arrow says: "Mr. and Mrs. A.H. COOK and son of Down City and Mr and Mrs Earl GREENE and two sons of Vail visited at the C.A. GREENE home from Friday until Monday. They are making the trip by auto and went from here to Emmetsburg to visit at the E.E. GREENE home. Mrs. COOK is a sister of the GREENE boys and Mr. GREEN is a brother." The West Bend Journal says that Father DOBBERSTEIN sold two cubs a few days ago to a gentleman at Story City for $90. Mrs. W.R. SCHIRMER returned to her home at Spencer Wednesday evening after a pleasant visit with Emmetsburg relatives. The Independent says that Paul BLEY of Rush Lake township has gone to Big Sandy, Montana, to visit with his son, P.F. BLEY. Rolland KING arrived home from Atlantic, Iowa, last week after an absence of some time. His family still lives at that place. John GALLEGER came over from Mason City last week to be present at the marriage of his sister, Miss Mary GALLEGER, Wednesday morning. Miss Lizzie McNALLY went to Garner Wednesday to visit her brother Ray. She was accompanied by her cousin, Miss HERRINGTON, who had been visiting her for some time. Mrs. O.P. DOYLE and family went to St. Paul Saturday morning to spend a couple of days with relatives. They made their trip in their Mighty Michigan. They must have had a most delightful ride. Thomas GALLEGER came down from Lake Park Tuesday evening of last week to attend the marriage of his sister. He has a position in the Rock Island depot at Lake Park. He has been in the employ of the company since last fall and enjoys railroad work. Mr and Mrs Peter PETERS of Lyon county own 400 acres of land worth $66,500. Mr PETERS has nine sons and daughters and Mrs. PETERS has ten. Still, they are not happy. Mrs. PETERS asked for a divorce, a division of the property and $20,000 in cash. They were married six years ago. At the summer meeting of the Upper Des Moines Editorial association, held at Storm Lake Thursday and Friday, L.E.BLADINE of the Cedar Falls Record was chosen president, J.E. CHRYSLER of the Odebolt Chronicle vice president and Al ADAMS of the Humboldt Independent secretary and treasurer. The winter meeting of the organization will be held at Manson. She will visit relatives at Mason City and Austin before reaching there. A farewell party was held Thursday afternoon at the home of Mr and Mrs Joseph MULRONEY for her before departure. Miss WALSH graduated from St. Mary's Academy a few years ago and she has also been teaching. She is a cultured and most deserving young lady. Her many local friends wish her success in her chosen field. Cathy Joynt Labath Palo Alto Co, Iowa USGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapaloal/paloalto.htm

    3. Would anyone know what years there would have been 2 and 3 digit phone numbers? I recently found The Little Red Book of Household Hints, Price $1.00 Printed by the V.F.W. Auxiliary of Emmetsburg, Iowa. I will later transcribe a list of the women's names and the advertisers. The date this was published is not given, but the ads all have 2 and 3 digit phone numbers. Some of the helpful hints are pretty interesting (i.e. funny) and I will also transcribe some of those for your enjoyment at a later date! Cathy

    3. Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, Aug 27, 1913 Earl ROACH came up from Garner the last of the week to visit his parents and other relatives. Misses Hortense, Isabel and Winnifred MAYNE were at Ellsworth, Iowa last week visiting relatives. Mr and Mrs Charles SIEGELE arrived home from Charles City last week after an absence of ten months. The Daily Messenger says that Mr and Mrs Wm. WHITE of Mallard were Fort Dodge visitors Wednesday. Algona sent 103 passengers to the Twin Cities on the cheap excursion over the M. & St L a week ago Saturday night. Mr and Mrs A.W. WAGNER made an auto trip to Des Moines last week. It is needless to say they were visiting relatives and sight seeing. The Chronicle says that Mr and Mrs Robert BOWDEN have gone to Cherokee where Mrs. BOWDEN will have treatment for her nervous ailment. J.J. McEVOY of Fort Dodge visited his sister, Miss Josie of this city Wednesday and Thursday. He travels for the International Harvester company. The public schools of our city will open next Monday morning. Every pupil who will attend during the coming year should be on hand promptly. Keith EMRICH left for Iowa Falls Saturday where he joined his aunt, Miss Ethel ROSS [May be ROSE], of Sioux City. From there they left for Denver, Colorado, for a month's outing. Agent SINN of Ayrshire tells the Chronicle that he is thinking seriously of quitting railroading. He claims the hours are too long and the work too exacting for the compensation he receives. Frank R SHELTON is the new principal of the Mallard schools. The other teachers are Miss Mayme NALLY, Nettie SAMMIN and Jennie AGNEW. Emmetsburg furnishes a large number of teachers for our county. Mr and Mrs FISK arrived home from Mason City Wednesday evening where they had been visiting relatives. They were accompanied by Mrs. J.E. WILLIAMS, who will spend some time with them and with other relatives at Curlew. J.W. JACKSON received a letter from his parents last week stating that they are well pleased with their trip through eastern Montana. Crops are fine in that part of the state this season. Mr and Mrs JACKSON have a number of sons living in that locality. Mr and Mrs E.M. HUGHES of The Dallas, Oregon, intend leaving for Amery, Wisconsin, this week. They will visit relatives at Stockton and Chicago, Illinois, for a short time, after which they will come to Emmetsburg. They have chosen a delightful season of the year for their long trip. Thirty land seekers from Illinois and central Iowa were in Emmetsburg Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. They had a number of joy rides into the country but none of them invested. It is possible they were out for a good time. Land men have often a difficult time determining who are really anxious to invest and who are seeking free rides. Mrs. James GALLEGER and Miss Edna arrived home from Pipestone, Minnesota, Tuesday of last week after a visit of several weeks with Joe, who has been at that place for some time. A number of horses and cattle wre killed in Kossuth county during the thunderstorms of last week and many hay and grain stacks were burned. Mrs. W.E.G. SAUNDERS left Wednesday for Buffalo, New York to attend the International Hygenic convention. Mrs. Governor CLARKE is also a delegate from this state. The W.A. of Trinity church will meet this afternoon at the home of Mrs. John SCOTT, who will be assisted by Mrs. Wm. DUNIGAN and Mrs. Fred PARKS. All are cordially invited. Wm. FISHER mourns the death of his sister, Mrs. A.J. BENSON, who died at Hinkley, Minnesota, last Wednesday. He has the sympathy of his many friends and neighbors in his sorrow. Those who travel in autos or buggies should remember that hte new law requires them to turn out and give half the road to parties who are behind them and who wish to pass by and go faster. Mr and Mrs. L.H. MAYNE were at Storm Lake Thursday and Friday attending the summer meeting of the Upper Des Moines editorial association. From there they went to Sioux City where they spent Saturday and Sunday with relatives. A straw stack near the home of W.H. GAYLORD just east of this city was destroyed by lightning last Wednesday morning. It took considerable effort on the part of Mr. GAYLORD, his family, and neighbors to save some of the buildings on the premises. During the severe thunderstorm of Tuesday evening of last week, Hans SCOTT, who lives near Ringsted, lost his barn by lightning. Two horses, five cows and a bull were burned to death. Mr SCOTT carried some insurance. We glean from the Dispatch. We understand that Ernie STILLMAN has located at Clear Lake for the practice of law. He recently graduated from the legal department of the State University of Iowa. He is a bright persevering, deserving young man. The Democrat wishes him success in his new field of labor. Mr and Mrs. W.L. LINDERMAN and Miss Hazel left for Clear Lake Saturday morning where they spent the day with friends. Sunday evening they went to McGregor where they took a steamer for Keokuk. They are attending the dedication of the great dam at that place. They are having a most delightful time. The last of the week W.L. LINDERMAN and Harry PFIFFNER received a barrel of water lily bulbs and seeds which they have deposited in the bottom of the lake in the vicinity of Third Island. A number were deposited some distance north of the island over twenty years ago by H.C. SHADBOLT. It is said that they are still quite thrifty. 1. [IAPALOAL] Ed McNally and Selective Service Board
    2. Cathy Joynt Labath
    3. My great grandfather. He died two years before I was born so I never met him. Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Thursday, March 23, 1944 McNally's Service to Country Spans 2 Wars The service Ed McNally, popular and widely known Emmetsburg real estae man, has rendered to his country has spanned two wars. This was noted recently when Mr McNally received a Certificate of Appreciation signed by President Roosevelt for his service on the Palo Alto Selective Service board of which he is chairman. At the close of the last World War, more than a quarter of a century ago, he received a similar certificate signed by President Wilson for similar services rendered. It is about the only thanks a selective service board member gets for a very difficult and thankless job, which draws no pay, but which renders a great service to his country. Other members of the Palo Alto board who have served since it was organized and began operation in 1941 also received the citation. The certificate Mr McNally received in the first World War was in the nature of a commission. At that time the late W.I. Branagan was chairman of the board and the late E.A. Morling, chief justice of the supreme court, was secretary. The certificate he received the other day which is also signed by Governor Hickenlooper and General Grahl, says: "In grateful recognition of uncompensated services patriotically rendered his country in the administration of the Selective Service System." Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Thursday, March 17, 1945 Ed M'Nally Resign as Board Head Sees Serious Injury to Farming Edward McNally, prominent Emmetsburg man, has resigned as chiarman of the Palo Alto County Selective Service board after serving on the board since it was founded in the pre-war days. The chief reason Mr. McNally resigned is because he is out of sympathy with the demand for farmers in the service when they are needed to produce food on the farm. His Reasons. "I am resigning, for one reason, because too many men are being taken off the farm," he said. I do not see the sense in urging all out farm production and then having orders come in demanding the very men who would make increased farm production possible. "I do not understand why the men in the factories should be protected from military service at the expense of farmers who are responsible for feeding the servicemen, the factory workers, and the rest of the world. "While I was serving on the board, men called were not taken. I did not see why we should call up men if they were not to be taken. So I resigned. When I resigned, the headquarters cancelled the order for the men. This happened more than once. "If they do not intend to take the men, headquarters should not require us to call them up and send them for examinations. This is a useless waste of expense and of time for all concerned." Mr. McNally has the unusual record of serving on the draft board of World War I as well as with Selective Service in this war. He has been cited by the government for his outstanding service in both. Real Regret. Widely known and highly respected, his services have been highly valued by the community and it is with real regret his resignation becomes known. He has long held a common sense view of Selective Service, feeling more is lost than is gained by over-supplying the armed forces when essential work goes begging at home. Mayor Harold E Barringer, a member of the board, has been named chairman to succeed Mr McNally. Other members of the board are Henry H. Willingham, Jorgen Andersen, Graettinger; and Allen B Carter of West Bend. The board members, and W.H.H. Steiner, board clerk, and Mrs. Steiner, who is employed in the office have adopted the following resolution expressing regret at Mr McNally's resignation. Whereas, Our esteemed friend and fellow citizen, Edward McNally, has seen fit to resign as chairman of the Palo Alto county Local Board, and Whereas, He has for many years filled the office from which he now retires, with great ability and satisfaction, therefore, Be It Resolved, That we hereby express to him that his resignation was accepted with deep regret by the remainder of the Board and the clerical assistants; and to extend to him our sincere thanks for his untiring labors in behalf of our organization and of the public interest; and to let him know that his judgment and understanding will be missed at all future meetings. Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions, properly engrossed, be presented to him as a mark of our esteem.

Brennan, a son of Mr and Mrs. M.F. Brennan of this city, which occurred early on Wednesday morning at his home in San Francisco. A short time before he underwent an operation for appendicitis. He never rallied. His death was a great surprise, not only to his family but to his parents and many relatives in this locality. The remains were brought to this city for burial. They arrived Tuesday and were taken to the home of his parents on the south side. The funeral took place this morning. Services were conducted at the Assumption church, Very Rev. J.G. Murtagh offering a requiem high mass. There was a very large attendance of relatives and friends. The burial was in the family lot in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were W.E.G. Saunders, Lawrence Brennan, Robert Mulroney, T.F. Rutledge, P.C. Jackman and John Wessar. Mr. Brennan was born in this county February 9, 1882. He attended the country schools in Great Oak township and grew to manhood in this locality. He held the position until two years ago when he secured a position in the Fifth Street Terminal Station in San Francisco where he served on a special police force. In February, 1921, he was married in that city to Miss Grace Kilgore. Mr. Brennan is survived by his wife, his parents, two brothers and three sisters. The brothers are Attorney J.F. [James F] Brennan of San Francisco and Attorney M.J. [Martin J] Brennan of Milwaukee. The sisters are Mrs. W.A. [Catherine Brennan] Hughes of Havre, Montana and Mrs. M.W. Neibauer [Anna V Brennan] and Mrs. Alice Currans of this city. All were present at the funeral. Mr. Brennan grew to manhood in this county and was well and favorably known to the younger and older people of his time. He was genial, open-minded and courteous and was very much attached to those whom he esteemed. He led and industrious, useful, successful life. He was a dutiful son, a helpful, sympathetic brother and an upright, dependable citizen. Accepting employment from a large corporation in San Francisco, he was true to every obligation placed in his hands. In live in a large city there are many trying situations but he was guided in all that he said and did by a high sense of duty and he proved himself capable of handling perplexing affairs as they arose. His death at a comparatively early age is a severe blow to his wife, his aged parents, his brothers and his sisters. The sad occurrence taking place in the absence of his brother, J.F., with whom he had always an opportunity to consult in personal and in official affairs, was particularly sad. It is not surprising that those who were dear to him were eager to have his remains interred in their family lot in this city and to give his many relatives and old friends an opportunity of paying to his memory a fond tribute of respect. We united with hosts of sorrowing friends in offering sincere sympathy to the beloved wife, the grief stricken parents, and the other members of their good family in their bereavement. As you know, H.S. LeDue was one of the pallbearers for my grand aunt Alice Jackman (sister of my grandfather Francis Jackman) in 1965. Obviously she/he must have been a close friend of Alice. There are 2 pictures of Alice Jackman at the Palo Alto Co. Iowa website where you saw the obit for Alice Jackman - http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapaloal/paloalto.htm located in the Pictures and Documents Section. Do you know who H.S. LeDue might be, and do you have a Palo Alto Co. Iowa connection - is your family from there???? In the 1900 Nevada township, Palo Alto Co., Iowa census (also located at the website under Census Section), I found the following: Ledue George Border w m May 1860 40 s . . . The writer is rounding out his 40th year as publisher. The Reporter has changed hands several times. The list shows how many changes will take place in a community in less than a half century. This copy of the Democrat should be preserved for reference purposes. It would settle disputes regarding pioneer business and professional firms.

    3. Posted on: PaloAlto County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/PaloAltoObits/10672 Surname: McNally, Kelly, Clark ------------------------- Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wed., Aug. 4, 1926 John McNally, Old Resident Passes Lived in County 53 Years. Pioneer Deputy Sheriff and City Marshal. Was Widely Known John McNally, one of the widely known residents of our community, died shortly after ten o'clock last Monday morning after a lingering illness of some time. His condition became rather serious about five years ago and while he was able to be about much of the time he gradually failed. Death finally came to relieve him. The funeral was held this morning. Services were conducted in St. Thomas church, the pastor, Father McNerney, offering a requiem high mass. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends from various parts of the county. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. Mr McNally was born at Ixonia, Wisconsin, September 20, 1853. He was nearing the close of his 73d year. He grew to young manhood in his native community, coming to Emmetsburg in a covered wagon 53 years ago. Mr McNally was united in marriage in the Assumption parish in this city February 18, 1878, to Miss Mary Ann Kelly. Mr and Mrs McNally subsequently made their home in this city. Mr. McNally served for some time as deputy sheriff of our county about forty years ago. Later he was city marshal for many years. Mr McNally is survived by his widow, three sons and one daughter. The sons are J.W. of St. Louis, D.E., of Emmetsburg and E.H. of Ayrshire. The only daughter, Mrs. H.D. Clark, lives at Independence, Kansas. Three sons and one daughter are dead. Mr. McNally was one of the widely known pioneer citizens of our couny. He was genial, ready, warm-hearted and friendly, was a clever mixer and had hosts of loyal friends. He was a man of good habits and he always took a fatherly interest in his family. His friends and neighbors found him dependable and our community entertained a warm regard for him. He was a faithful, fearless officer and in the discharge of police duties he often took desperate chances but he knew his obligations and he did not falter in carrying them out. For ?? years John McNally was a familiar figure on our streets and in our public gatherings. Many will recall the faithful dog that for years accompanied him as he went from place to place. Offenders did not care to see them approaching. Mr. McNally will be missed not only by his companion of almost half a century and his loving sons and daughter but also by four brothers and our citizens in general who knew him for so long. The survivors have the heartfelt sympathy of our many readers in their bereavement. Link: Palo Alto County, Iowa USGenWeb Project URL: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapaloal/paloalto.htm>
