    1. Floyd Jones-Adopted & Lost
    2. Gary Schumacher
    3. Hello, I recently learned that my Great Grandparents, Clarence and Daisy Viola (Mendenhall) JONES adopted a son, Floyd, in addition to the two daughters they had. They lived in Page County, Iowa (probably Grant or Lincoln Twp.) at this time. This is what I know. I came across a photo of Floyd with one of the daughters, Nora. Since I know her birthdate, I'm judging that Floyd was born approximately 1894-1897. I don't know how old he was when he came to live with them. He does not appear on the 1900 census in their family, but I haven't yet been able to order in the 1910 census to check it over. He apparently had some problems. He took someone's bicycle, and Clarence and Daisy sent him to live with the grandparents, Henry T. & Elizabeth Jones (Lincoln Twp.) OR Peter Bray & Emily Mendenhall (College Springs)also in Page County, Iowa. He ran away from their home and I don't know if they ever saw him again. They did hear from him again by letter. In an old letter written in 191! 6, Daisy's mother states, "I am so glad you herd from Floyed. I think he is just where he ought to be if he is a soldier he will have to go pretty straight and cant get in to mischief." In another old letter, the other sister, Mildred, asked a cousin if he had seen Floyd anywhere in France. He said no. I take it Floyd served in the military and went to World War I. I am aware that the adoption records are sealed in Iowa, and someone from the list told me about getting a private investigator. I guess maybe I should start there since I don't know if he was legally adopted for sure, but can't afford the fee at this time. Does anyone have any ideas on proceeding on this search? Is there someone out there familiar with this individual that knows of him or what happened to him? It always seems like such a long shot, but I have to try. I've read so many wonderful success stories. Thanks everyone. You are all so helpful. Kristy

    1. Jones family leaves for Texas and returns to Iowa
    2. Gary Schumacher
    3. Hello List, My work for the family of Henry T. Jones and Elizabeth Burgess Jones continues. I have a couple more questions--it seems like a shot in the dark, but I'll give you a try. They appear on the 1870 Page County Census with their children, Josephine, Clarence, and Jahu. I know they had another son, Andrew in 1874/1875. They also appear on the 1880 census with another daughter, Lettie Jane, born in Texas in 1877. I know from an obituary that they were in Texas for 3 or 4 years when Andrew was a little boy--possibly 1875-78/79. I also know that two children were buried in Texas. I don't know if they were born in Iowa before they left or if they were born in Texas. It seems unlikely that she would have three children in Texas in three or four years. Now the questions. Am I overlooking any records that might tell about the births of children before 1880? Does anyone have any ancestors that left for Texas for any reason that they know of around that time? I wonder if they went to join family members in Texas, or did they leave with friends in Iowa to embark on something new and seemingly promising. Evidently it didn't work out. If I had any idea where they went in Texas, I could begin searching for death or cemetery records of the two children and thus identify them and add them to my family group sheet. I would love to hear from anyone with any ideas. I appreciate all the help from members of the list. Everyone is so helpful and friendly. Kristy

    3. Hi Everyone, I'm new to the list. I found a relative of mine who is buried in the DAVISON Cemetery in Page County, Iowa. According to Page County's website, there is only one gravesite that has a tombstone still standing. The name of the person that it belongs to is Nelson WILDER, who died June 2, 1891. This person is my ggggg-Uncle. By any chance is there anyone on this list who might actually live near this cemetery who would be willing to take a picture of this gravesite for me? I would really appreciate it. I'm willing to pay the cost involved. Thanks, Beth
