    3. Inez, The original question was sent by someone wanting this information and the time frame is after 1880. "I ordered the records for this county through my FHL but cannot find any of them. Question:Did residents of Mills county marry in another county or state (Nebraska) due to it being easier, cheaper, or whatever?" According to "Ghost Towns in Mills County" by Alan Wortman, the first ferry across the Missouri was established around 1836 and in 1852 Samuel Martin applied for a ferry license at Plattsville and in 1852 Col. Sarpy started a steam ferry at Trader's Point, and in 1854 he asked for the same for a ferry at Bethlehem (later called East Plattsmouth) running to Plattsmouth NE The Highway 34 toll bridge (to NE) was not built until the early 1930's. Bev Boileau thinks it would be a chore to take the ferry to NE to get married if you lived in East Plattsmouth. It would be the easiest to get to Glenwood but maybe Pottawattamie Co. or Fremont Co. would be as easy. Bev knows more about what went on in Mills County than anyone I know so I would take her assessment of the situation. East Plattsmouth kind of faded away after the turn of the century. It was on the Iowa side. Margaret Briley says she found some of hers marrying as far south as Atchison Co.MO. I think that would be unusual by the 1880's. -- Cay Merryman http://www.rootsweb.com/~iamills/ Inez wrote: > > Hi Cay: You have me curious. Is east Plattsmoth. in NE or IA?
