This is the first message I have received in awhile. Thanks Mickey McCall ----- Original Message ----- From: <IAMILLS-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <IAMILLS-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 01, 2001 9:47 AM Subject: IAMILLS-D Digest V01 #100
I have heard from many subscribers who have not been receiving messages through the list for some time. After my latest attempt at changing some of the Mills list Utilities I believe we have the answer. I am sending the latest message which I sent this week end. I apologize to those who already received it - just hit the delete button. For those of you who want to read the messages you might have missed, just click on Mills Archives just above the GenConnect at rootsweb logo on the main page and you can see them all. Also, if you did not get messages about the Mills County Surname Registry, check that out on the main page. THIS IS IMPORTANT. Send your Mills surnames to Margaret <mhougland@poboxes.com> Thanks to all of you who responded and who have been faithful subscribers for several years - even if we don't hear from you often. Cay +++++++++++++++++++ Message sent on Friday September 28th. Hi Listers, Margaret has just uploaded the 1885 Births for Mills County. This probably concludes the posting of Births for a while and on to something else. We wanted to alert you to the ailing Search Engine. We have probably maxed out the number of pages the Search Engine will handle. It tells us that it is searching 529 pages and we have quite a few more than that. Just be aware that Solomon's History, the 1880 Rawles Twp., the Surname Registry and probably other things are not being searched. You can always use the "Find" or "Find in Page" to search a page. I am back from a 3 week vacation. I was able to spend 3 days in Glenwood and other Mills County locations. Did some research on my own family this year. As usual, Denise Crawford and the staff at the Library continued to be extremely helpful. Those of us interested in Mills County should be grateful we have such people to work with. I have a suggestion. Would some of you like to help out the Mills County Genealogical Society? They would sure appreciate some new members. All their membership dues and/or donations go into a fund to buy new genealogical books for the Library. They have a great collection for a library of that size. Much of the material on our Mills web site has been copied from collections found at the library. Membership Dues are only $4.00 per year due in January. Membership entitles you to 4 issues of the newsletter. You may have one query with each issue. There are many Mills people who subscribe who don't have a computer so you reach a new group of researchers. Rachel Carlile, a volunteer from the Genealogical Society, comes in every Tuesday to answer the queries and requests that come in by snail mail and e-mail. They have one of the best obituary files I have ever run across. They charge only $5.00 per hour plus photocopying charges. One of the best bargains in genealogy. Contact Mills County Genealogical Society, c/o Glenwood Public Library, 109 N. Vine, Glenwood IA 51534 or if you want to use your e-mail contact me for directions. By the way, I was alerted by one of the list members that the Fremont-Mills Beacon-Enterprise, the newspaper, is now online. It is kind of fun to look even if their information is too recent for our purposes, usually. http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?brd=2043 -- Cay Merryman http://www.rootsweb.com/~iamills/
This is a test message. Some subscribers are being shown as "not a subscriber" when I know you are and have been for a long time. I have changed some settings trying to correct this error. If you receive this message and have not been receiving messages to the mailing list recently, please let me know. I did send a message to the list either Friday or Saturday so everyone should have had that one. Cay
Checking in with test message, I have not heard a word from the list in a long while. Gail
If you have LEMONDS in your family branch....I can refer you to a gold mine on that surname! Deb
Hey group - just want to say a tad bit - Have received an e-mail from someone who seems to think I am an expert on the JONES surname in Mills County ------ NOW - registering surnames (to me) just means I am interested in those surnames - I am researching "someone(s)" :o) with that surname so I can ascertain if they ARE members of my family or can lead me TO members of my family. Am I wrong? (someone else wrote me about the Lemonds - they were correct in their assumption - just haven't had the time to respond to them --- I am NOT speaking about them - will respond to that person shortly) I am NOT an expert on any of 'my' surnames for any particular county, state, etc. Especially the "JONES" surname - there are simply too many JONES(es) out there - most of them NOT related to each other. Would be great if someone started a HUGE data base containing ALL information about ALL Jones - but it would be HUGE! Wish I were an expert - sure would be more helpful on this 'Scavenger Hunt' for my ancestors. :o) Plus would really enjoy helping others that way - I just don't have the information available. :o( Have advised them to send their message to the list so ALL can read it and see if they might be related or have more info to give. Hope I'm not wrong on this - if I am - then I need to remove ALL of the surnames I registered - All of the names I listed are in some way interrelated to each other - via marriages - I was just trying to collect all of my family as they (Iowa part) were lost when my part of the family migrated to Nebraska. My mother is 82 now and really wants to know all about her grandfather and his relatives. Thanks for listening! Vicky L. Williams 'A life is not lost when it is known to future generations.' author unknown
Sarah Elizabeth Sturgeon is buried in the Emerson Cemetery next to her husband John F. Her stone reads Sarah E. F. 1853 - 1942 - Mother. An obituary could probably be obtained for both of them from the Glenwood Public Library. If you are interested in that please write me privately and I can tell you how. -- Cay Merryman http://www.rootsweb.com/~iamills/ Pat Johnson wrote: > > Looking for the death date of Sarah Elizabeth (Lizzie) Forrest STURGEON. Looking for the death date of Sarah Elizabeth (Lizzie) Forrest STURGEON. Her husband John F died in 1931 in Mills Co IA. She was still alive in 1926 when her sister died in Ottumwa, Iowa. Any help would be appreciated.
We are receiving some feedback about our new Surname Registry. Two complaints about the first page not showing correctly. If you are having trouble could you please send a message to Margaret <mhougland@poboxes.com> and tell her what browser you are using. She will get it fixed I am sure. I use Netscape 4.72 and it shows as it should. We appreciate your help. Cay -- Cay Merryman http://www.rootsweb.com/~iamills/

The first installment of the Mills County Surname Registry is now on the Mills County web site. The most recent of the names turned in did not make it to this installment. There are online about 320 surnames sent in by about 60 people. We already have another 80 names sent in by an additional 20 people which will hit our pages soon. For those on the list who have not yet responded with your Mills County Surnames we urge you to do so soon. Remember, Mills County names only. Everyone please remember to check your surnames and e-mail addresses and send your corrections to Margaret. I am the one who copied everything and sent it to Margaret so any errors found are mine. Could we ask those of you who did not send your complete name to add a last name or at least an initial. It will help identify you. Thanks. Cay -- Cay Merryman http://www.rootsweb.com/~iamills/
