1998 GENQUEST GENEALOGY SURVEY <<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>> ======================================================= For the past two years GenQuest, Inc. has conducted a survey of Genealogists using the Internet and as 1998 comes to a close they are inviting you to take part in this years. The goal is to conduct the same exact survey three years in a row with the same questions in order to have a reliable set of data. The results of this survey will be made publicly available to anyone, organization or Web site that requests it. The survey is available at: http://www.genquest.com/survey.html Two questions may arise in the minds of those who read this request: 1). Since spamming (receiving unsolicited E-mail) is a serious problem, is this some way of getting my E-mail address? The answer is NO. No where in the survey is your E-mail address or identity asked for. After you fill it out and submit it you get a thank you message. The header of a recent submission is quoted below so that you may seen the information is received: "Subject: GenQuest: Survey Date: Mon, 30 Nov 1998 11:01:01 -0500 From: "Genquest Web Site" <[email protected]> To: [email protected]" 2). Why does such a survey need to be conducted? According to the December 1995 AmeriPoll survey, almost half of America is involved in genealogy research to some degree, and I suspect that the statistics are close to the same in Canada and Western Europe. With so many people doing genealogy, there should be reliable data that any person, genealogical society/organization, software maker, or entity, which provides support to our research efforts. Currently there is no body of information. If you have any other questions or concerns feel free to E-mail me. Sincerely, Ron Maloney GenQuest, Inc. [email protected]
I received this letter and thought I would pass it along to see if anyone could help. Ramonyca "I am looking for the lineage of Lester Ray Benedict of Gilman, Iowa. At least that's what is on my birth certificate. The information states that he was 48 years old and married to Marie Jeanette Brodeur (second wife?). The date was August 17,1 943. They lived in Bloomington, California, at that time. The paternal grandparents, if I remember right, lived in Riverside, California. The parents were both musicians. The reason that I am looking for this now, is at the age of 55, I have developed some unusual arthritis problems. I was an adopted child, as well as my brother Leon Edward Benedict. We are on the family tree maker disk, under the name of Edward Leon Brodeur--mother's father." CONTACT: Marie J. Benedict < [email protected] > Thank you! Ramonyca Howard

Help!! >> Hi, For years 1921-1941, you will need to send to Des Moines for those records. There is a $10.00 charge for each birth, death or marriage record requested that is nonrefundable if record not found. Copies of Divorce are $6.00. Your request must include the name of the person on the record, the date of event, the county where event occurred, their parent's names if known, your name & relationship to the person, your address & phone number and your payment. If you are not sure of the county put down both county names. It will take 6 to 8 weeks. If no record is found they keep the payment as a search fee. Does anyone here have access to the Mineola Cemetery burials? I'm looking for info on a little set of twins buried there around 1930, born too soon, last name KIERSCH. Would dearly appreciate a lookup. They were my aunt and uncle. Sue SMITH MCLEAN

We have several photo's of the following people. Need help in identifying them. Bert & Ruth Maxine CREIGHTON (possible Maxine is the name of a baby that Ruth is holding). Also have a picture of this Ruth sitting on the ground working the flowerbed in front of the Creighton family tombstone, presumably Malvern Cemetery. We believe Ruth's maiden name may have been MADDEN or possibly FICKEL. The picture of Bert, Ruth and baby is a studio photo and taken in the late 1800's. The cemetery photo is a snapshot taken later. We have quite a number of photographs of people whom we believe are MADDEN family members. There is a group family photo taken after 1898 but before 1910 of John H. Madden, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There is also a family album with a number of photo's of people we believe are MADDEN family members. John H. and Mary Fickel Madden had at least four daughters: Mary E. Madden born 1871, died 1962 buried Malvern Cem. Rachael no info Emma L. no info unless she is the Emma Miller in a family photo along with the name Roy Ireland, also unidentified. Lydia born 1865, died 1868 buried Malvern Cem Joshua Wilson was a son of Mary Fickel Madden from a previous marriage. John H. Madden raised Joshua. We will share these photos with any Madden or Fickle relatives, and if we can locate descendants of Ruth Maxine Creighton, they can have the original studio picture - we will just keep a copy. Please, get in contact with us if any of this connects with someone. Would also like to find any descendants of Isaac Madden who died in 1889 and is buried in Malvern Cemetery with wife Elizabeth and daughter Nellie M. We believe him to be a brother of John H. Madden. Thanks for your offer, Mary. It would be nice to have help. After the note I sent to [email protected] yesterday I have had about a dozen requests for look-ups of one kind or another. It proves there are people out there using the discussion list. It would help a lot if those who are inquiring could give me a time frame and perhaps a township or town to help me identify just who they are looking for. Time does not allow me to do a lot of guessing. Hi, I have a Mills county cemetery Book and will be happy to look up names for you - Mary [email protected]
Sue, Wish I had something to help you. The only Kirsch listed in the Mills Cemetery is Mary Kirsch, wife of John Little . She was b. in 1805 and died 1886 and buried in Saint Boniface Cemetery. Know that is not going to help you. I even checked Fremont (next county south). Nothing. Sorry. Cay Merryman

ELIZABETH (LIZZIE) DAVIS of Ashland, Nebraska was listed as executrix in the 1931 Mills County Iowa Probate Records for her sisters Mary Edith MAGUIRE/MAGWIRE b 5 Dec 1853 Petersburg, Huntingdon County, PA d 13 May 1931 Emerson, Mills County, IA, buried Emerson Cemetery & Minne Patience MAGUIRE/MAGWIRE b 4 Nov 1866 Petersburg, Huntingdon County, PA d 26 Sep 1931 Emerson, Mills County, IA & buried in Emerson Cemetery. Elizabeth MAGUIRE/MAGWIRE DAVIS was born circa 1848 in PA. In 1931 the only other surviving member of her natal family was her brother, my GreatGrandFather, Henry Joseph MAGUIRE b 19 Mar 1860 Petersburg, Huntingdon County, PA d 28 Feb 1941 Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, IA & buried Bethel Cemetery near Logan, Harrison County, IA. A desceased sister's children, whose name is unknown, were also named in the probate records. Those children would have been the nieces & nephews of Elizabeth DAVIS & Henry Joseph MAGUIRE. They were George BELL of Creston IA, Frank BELL of Freeport IL, Lela HOSSLE of Emerson IA and Luella TURNER of Red Oak IA. Henry Joseph MAGUIRE also had children who were all born near Emerson IA except the last one John E (need his birthdate), William McKinley, Charles Joseph, Vera Mae MAGUIRE KOENIG & Carl Lynn b Logan, IA. I have a lot of info on his children. Elizabeth's parents were James MAGUIRE/MAGWIRE b circa 1816 & Sarah DUNLAP b circa 1829 both born in PA, they had 10 children but I only have names of six of the children. Elizabeth & Henry also had brothers named John & Keage or Heage (couldn't read his name on 1880 census) who I presume passed away before 1931 since they were not listed in the probate records. The MAGUIRE/MAGWIRE family moved to Emerson, IA in 1879. They used both spellings of the surname. Elizabeth & Henry had cousins named Patience LOGAN age 42 & M James LOGAN age 2 who were living in the James MAGWIRE residence in 1880. Elizabeth was listed as unmarried on the 1880 & 1885 Mills County census records in her father's household which was in Section 13 north of the Emerson Cemetery. I do not know when or where Elizabeth married Mr Davis or any information about him. Does anyone have any information on Elizabeth MAGUIRE/MAGWIRE DAVIS or any of the other people listed above. James disappeared or died sometime after 1885 & I haven't found where he is buried yet. Sarah DUNLAP MAGUIRE lived for a time with Mary & Minnie in Emerson & I can not find any other info on her either. What happened to the 2 other brothers? I also have not been able to find out the deceased sister's name who is listed in the probate, it may have been a Nellie MCGUIRE, teacher, who I found living with Mary in Emerson on the 1885 census but I don't know. The names of the children lead me to believe she married a man named BELL but I didn't find any marriage record. I surie have a lot of mysteries to solve & can use all the help I can get. I have the Henry Joseph MAGUIRE line of the family to share. Vicki King [email protected]
Hi to all Mills researchers, I will be glad to do look ups for the following things in Mills County: Mills and Fremont County Cemeteries 1985 Mills County History Complete census records for any listing in the indexes which are posted on the county web site http://www.rootsweb.com/~iamills I also have at the local FHC the following census records: 1856 state census, 1860,1880,1900 and 1920. Unless you know township or town I don't have time to make a more extensive search. I was away from my computer all summer and probably neglected some of you who asked for help when I was away from my resource material. If I didn't get to you, try me again. Does anyone know if there is anything online pertaining to Mills County cemetaries? What about lookup volunteers. Mills County family names: MADDEN, FICKLE Don and Mary in Wyoming
No cemetery records are online for Mills County. The Genealogy Society has a cemetery book that was written in 1975 but as far as I know copies are no longer available. They have a very nice genealogy room in the library at Glenwood where the society has all of their resources. They have many obits on file. They were very helpful to me when I visited them last summer. They do look ups. Here is the url for the genealogical research help list avail for Mills County. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iamills/genhelps.htm#society <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~iamills/genhelps.htm#society">Helps</A> Vicki King
In 1906 the brother in law (Joshua E. Shelby) of my great grandmother left a will in Mills County naming heirs. The Shelby's lived in Lyons Township. His wife was Rebecca(Harrison) Shelby. Others mentioned in the will were sons James W., John D.(deceased in 1906), Theophilus Hall, and Joshua. Daughters named were Martha A. Powers, Margaret E. Shelby(deceased in 1906), Demora or Deborah Coleman, Sarah Hubbell, Arvilla or Rebecca Bailey and Julia Reels (deceased in 1906). Several of these are listed as living in Glenwood. Clarence Shelby was a grandchild as were Charles Reels and Leila Edna Reeds. If anyone has a clue as to the whereabouts of any descendants of this group would you please let me know. Thank you [email protected] for the nice poem. From one who has walked thru many cemeteries looking for ancesters. Mary Lee Stewart LEE - FISHER - ETHERINGTON - HYDE - PRINDLE - HOPP - just a few
Here is a poem that you may enjoy. It was sent to me by a cousin who also works on genealogy. Dear Ancestor Your tombstone stands among the rest; Neglected and alone. The name and date are chiseled out On polished, marbled stone. It reaches out to all who care It is too late to mourn. You did not know that I exist You died and I was born. Yet each of us are cells of you In flesh, in blood, in bone. Our blood contracts and beats a pulse Entirely not our own. Dear Ancestor, the place you filled One hundred years ago Spreads out among the ones you left Who would have loved you so. I wonder if you lived and loved, I wonder if you knew That someday I would find this spot, And come to visit you. Author Unknown
This holidays are coming soon & I thought I would share my mother's carrot bread receipe with you. Mother was born in Emerson, Mills County, Ia 1926. It is easy & fast to make. The worse part is grating the carrots. BETTY'S CARROT BREAD Bake time 1 hour Temp. 325 3/4 C oil 1/4 tsp salt 1 C sugar 1 C grated carrots 1 & 1/2 C flour 2 eggs 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 C nuts (any kind, we like black walnuts best) 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp vanilla Mix ingredients all together in a bowl. It will look soupy but don't worry that is the way it is suppose to look. Bake in a loaf pan. Vicki King
