Harry DeGroot, 96, a resident of the Marian Home in Fort Dodge, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died on Friday, January 16, 2004 at the care center. He was born October 28, 1907 in Highland, Indiana, the son of Richard and Jenny DeJong DeGroot. The family moved to the Oskaloosa area when he was 11 years old. On June 4, 1936, Harry was married to Wilma Pikaart at Oskaloosa. He farmed for many years in the Ottumwa and Oskaloosa areas, and retired from farming in 1969. He then worked at Mathew Lumber in Oskaloosa for several years. He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, and served as an elder, deacon, teacher, and sang in the church choir and with a male quartet for many years. He had been a board member of Good News Chapel in Oskaloosa, and a Sunday school teacher there for many years. Harry had been active in support to the Oskaloosa Christian School, and had served as a board member. Harry loved music and enjoyed people, especially his gra! ndchildren and great grandchildren. Harry is survived by his wife, Wilma of Badger, Iowa; his daughter and her husband: Nancy and Myron Huyser of Badger; 2 sons and their wives: Bill and Linda DeGroot of Leighton, and Rev. John and Linda DeGroot of Yukon, Oklahoma; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren: Vicki (& Lindy) Eatwell, and Nathaniel and Quinlan of Belmond, Iowa; Greg (& Melissa) Huyser, and Laura and Michael of Indianola; Daniel (& Monica) Huyser and Jeremy of Ames; Brad (& Heidi) Huyser and Owen of Ankeny; David DeGroot and Gina Carson of Van Meter, Iowa; Steve DeGroot of Pella; Debra (& Dan) Terpstra and Wyatt and Ivy of New Sharon; Kathleen (& Jose) Warton and Natalia of Malden, Massachusetts; Carol (& Todd) Holsman and Alex and Bryce of Raymore, Missouri; Jason (& Melissa) DeGroot of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Malinda (& Jeremiah) Sowards of Jacksonville, North Carolina; and John Parker of Oskaloosa. Harry was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters: Christine Vandehaar and Gertrude Schoolland; and 6 brothers: Jacob, George, Anthony, two who died in infancy, and one who was stillborn. Funeral services for Harry DeGroot will be held Tuesday, January 20, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. in the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Kenneth Dykstra officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa. There will be a Family Prayer Service Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. in the fellowship hall in the basement of the church, led by Pastor Alvern Boetsma. Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Monday after 10 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Monday 6 – 8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa Christian Grade School or to Good News Chapel of Oskaloosa.
