Their oldest son, Gabriel, married Harriett Ellis in 1861 at Fremont. George Paul was probably born at Hardin Co., Ky., although his father and mother were from Tennessee. Verlinda was born in West Virginia. By 1839, they are both at Greensburg, Decatur Co., Indiana, getting married. Their marriage license was said to originate in Bartholomew county, where Verlinda's parents, Andrew and Sarah (Webb) Callaway, lived. If anyone can give me information on this family, it would be greatly appreciated. I know that before they came to Iowa, they had three children; Gabriel, John and Sarah. Sarah seems to have vanished or deceased before this family came west with their children, Gabe, John, Elizabeth, Effie, Melissa, George, Andrew, Melinda, Mary Catherine and Mary Ellen (the second Mary may have been adopted), in or about 1862 with other families of that locale. There should be! some type of record or newspaper accounts of such a large migration. One of George and Verlinda's daughters recounted that journey and she said there were an even 100 wagons. Historical accounts mention the Kennedy wagon train of 1862 having just such a large train. The story of their westward migration ran the gamet from enjoyable to heartbreaking. Does anyone else have stories of these families who left Mahaska Co., Iowa? How about the loved ones they left behind?
