Dear Listers, Last week we did some reminiscing about Madison County and how it used to be decades ago. This week I received some clippings from the Des Moines Register sent by a Madison County relative and the headline was "New Roads and New People Changing Madison County" "Suburbia is knocking at Madison County's door, and money is beginning to flow to its beautiful hills. Drive south on a gravel road near Cumming, and the early fruits of development emerge over a dusty hill." A couple have built a $625,000 home on a hill overlooking a polo field and have invested another $660,000 in their Polo Pointe equestrian development. They are developing a 280 acre development. (Can you believe this is the sleepy Madison County we were talking about last week?) The article goes on to say that this is the first trickle of development money that is expected to pour into Madison County during the next decade. Thought some of you might enjoy hearing about the escalating land prices in an area where some of your ancestors might have lived and farmed. Cay
Last summer as I drove around Grand River Township, SW of Winterset in Madison County it occured to me that parts of the county are actually going back in time! Many of the family farms there have disappeared over the last 30 years. Many of the gravel roads are now marked as "Minimal Maintainance Road"s meaning they have stopped adding gravel and rarely if ever grade them. In some cases bridges have been removed over the waterways. It doesn't take nature long to reclaim what was once hers. I remembered reading Willa Cather's beautiful descriptions of the early settlers taming the land (in her novels O Pioneers and One of Ours)and the feeling that I was witnessing the process in reverse! Best regards, Doug in MN
As long as there is some reminiscing going on about Winterset may I put in my 2 cents. Doug talks about visiting Winterset in the 60's when he was a child and it hasn't changed much. When I was a child in the 30's our family would go to Winterset from Truro on a Friday evening to the movies and to eat at the Northside Cafe (made famous by the movie) then owned by a man named Harry Gaspari. It made for a pretty classy evening I thought then. The town really hasn't changed much since the 30's. The bridges were great attractions even in those days. Life was pretty laid back in those days in Madison County. Cay

When I was a child in the sixties, my grandparents would drive in from rural Macksburg for groceries and other shopping. If the folks had different errands, they would always arrange to meet "on the square". What is neat about the square in Winterset is that although many of the businesses have changed, it still has the same look and feel as it did in that time. Jane K., When you are in Winterset, you should also check out the new Museum on the south edge of town (near the hospital). They have a small genealogy library in addition to the exhibits. They may not charge admission for library use only, though I'm not totally sure on that. A visit to City Park and the Winterset Cemetery are also worth your while. Also, if you are in Des Moines you might want to check out the Iowa Genealogical Society on Douglas Ave across from the Merle Hay Mall. They are listed in the phone books or do a net search for them. I have been given to understand that there will be a Parker Reunion in the coming months in Madison County. The Parker Reunion is supposed to be for the descendants of Ira Parker and Margaret Shaklee. I do not know if the reunion includes the descendants of Ira's brothers, that is, Milton, Jonathan, and Isaac, or Ira's sister Eleanor. I would appreciate receiving information on any reunion plans. I am the great grandson of Ira Parker and Margaret Shaklee. For the past couple days there has been a discussion on this list concerning the services and fees of one particular professional researcher. She is not to blame for this. Rootsweb policies do not allow professional researchers to promote their services or discuss their fees on any list. This discussion is grossly unfair to other researchers in the Madison County area who cannot promote their services. In fairness to all of them, it is time for this discussion to stop. I am not a professional researcher, nor do I have any information from Madison County that I can share. I'm looking for information like the rest of you. Any recommendations of specific researchers should be done privately. Marilyn CT James Gill wrote: > > I'll add my recommendation of Lorraine Kile. I'll add my recommendation of Lorraine Kile. She's done quite a bit for me, is very responsive and prices very reasonable. I think she has access to some vital records as well as deeds, and has also done work with obituaries. Have done alot of digging for gggrandfather in Madison County. County people and library people are very friendly and helpful. Hard to beat the assistance they have given me. Think the reason for looking in Des Moines is that there are two periods in the 20th Cent when the vital records were all sent to the state and the county is blank for those periods. If the state doesnt have the records you wish, it is a good possibility, they never got them, and they are in the county. Good luck. In july, fill up on tomatoes and sweet corn, and bring the bug repellent. cdp jane kolar wrote: > I am new to the Madison Co mailing list. The cost of a certified copy of birth, death and marriage records in the State of Iowa is $10 - the cost is the same in every county - as well as from the state. Valerie ---------- From: James D. Miller <jdm1968@pionet.net> To: IAMADISO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [IAMADISO] Vital records Date: Sunday, April 30, 2000 11:22 AM Hello Jane, Well, I'll try to answer a couple of your questions. First of all, Iowa has been trying to close their vital records for years. The fact that they want you to get your records from Des Moines suggests that they want the $14 or so that it takes to get a certified copy from the state department of vital statistics. Anyhow, Iowa's vital statistics are no longer housed in the offices of the county clerks. Instead they now reside in the County Recorders office. And yes, you can get copies... Unless you are trying to get a membership in either the DAR or the Society of Mayflower Descendants I think certified copies are a waste of money... a regular old photocopy will work just as well for your needs. The charge for copies has increased dramatically... and varies from county to county. Here in Clarke County If you make the copy yourself I think it is a dollar a page, but if you ask the recorders to make copies it is much more. I can't tell you how much Madison Co.'s copies cost... even though I'm right next door I haven't been there in quite a while... ever since the madness over that absolutely dreadful book and movie. LOL. Best of Luck! Jim Miller, Osceola, IA
