    2. Thanks to your volunteer who has transcribed the 1880-1899 Marriage Index, I spent hours on this, this weekend as a direct result of new information gleaned through this transcription. This is a wonderful gift of time , knowledge and committment to researchers in Madison County. For those of us who cannot travel to Iowa to research as often as we would like to, this is a great researching tool. Judy, Cay, and Steven are to be commended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Julia Magee Colorado

    3. Hi Madison County Researchers, Well, at long last the 1880 - 1899 marriage index is on line and waiting to be searched! There are still a few things to be ironed out in it, but it is basically ready and waiting! It is an every name index, listing the brides as well as the grooms, including the bride's maiden and / or previous married name. There is an asterisk after any name that lists more than one marriage. With the maiden, or previous married name, the women should be easy to trace if there is multiple marriages. I do have additional information on most of the marriages if it is needed. It includes the parents of the bride and groom, their ages at the time of the marriage and their birthplace. I welcome any corrections or comments on this index. Also, I have started the 1900 - 1919 marriage index which should be ready to be posted in 2 to 3 months. Thank You, Judy Wight Branson jlwight@northlink.com

    2. --WebTV-Mail-8576-292 Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit Hi--sorry to be so slow in answering. Not sure if Erl Hays (my grandfather) owned a clothing store. I know he had an orchestra and tuned pianos at one time--before he became stone deaf. I do not know where that was. He then became a painter and wallpaper hanger. I am pretty sure that Erl and Maude Drake (my grandmother) were married in Winterset or Earlham perhaps and then somehow ended up in Bolivar, Mo. Maude was returned and buried in Earlham, however, in 1934. I do not know if the Drakes of Bolivar are related to "our" Drakes or not. Does your Mother (OR ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE) recall anything about or have infrmation about Maude Drake or her parents who are buried in Earlham cemetary, Martha Johnson or John Dickerson Drake. Her only sibling was a brother, Simon Mortie Drake who married Clara Trimmer. I would very much appreciate any information anyone may have on any of these people. Thanks for your time. 3. Welcome to the Madison County Mailing List. Wells was on the north border of Grand River Twp. very close to the Adair County line and almost in Webster Twp. No mention of the town in the 1875 Andreas Atlas but the "Hawkeye Heritage", Vol. 5, 1970 on page 10 lists Wells as an abandoned town which was a post office from 1871 to 1896 in section 6, Grand River Twp. 3. Hi, In checking the marriage records, here is what I found: Groseclose, John married Cynthia A. Lee - October 29, 1868 in Madison County, Iowa. Cynthia is buried at the Jefferson-Goare Cemetery in Jefferson Township, Madison County. If you need any information from DeSoto, that is in Dallas County, not Madison County. Hope this info helps you a bit. If I can check anything else, just let me know. 3. My mom is from Earlham and my grandmother lived there until she died. She did the biography of John Wayne which she gave to the house in Winterset. She loved gathering history through cemetary walkthroughs etc. She used to love going to the Bridge Festival every year but boy has things changed since the movie! Btw for those long time people from Madison County, you might have known my granny (as I affectionately called her), her name was Ethel Scar who I am proud to say I am named after.
