Here is additional information for researchers of the Jacob Yengel family. I would think it should be shared on the IALUCAS site as well for the benefit of all. :) Enjoy the information. Not my -- just a random act of genealogical kindness. :) Mary Beth in Wisconsin [info below] History of Lucas Co., IA, publ by LCGS, 1978, p. 277 "Yengel Brothers Meat Market 1868-1946 In the early 1860's Jacob Yengel came to this country from Germany near Frankfurt with his mother who was a widow. Jacob's brother John had come to America a few years before and was living in Burlington, Iowa so that was their destination. Jacob had learned the butcher trade in Germany and decided soon after arriving in Burlington to come to Chariton to see Jake Kull who had a saloon here. He walked from Burlington to Chariton carrying his butcher shop equipment. When the first CB & Q train came into Chariton jacob and Jake were at the station to meet Caroline Reder. Caroline had come to take care of Jake Kull's wife Mary who was expecting their first child and Mary and Caroline were half sisters. Jacob and Caroline, after a time, fell in love and were married. To this union six children were born - Edwin E., Elizabeth Mary, Fred Jacob, Bert, Grace and Ruth. In the year 1868 Jacob started the Yengel Meat Market and when Fred and Bert were old enough thye worked in the market with their father. In 1880 when the city election was held Jacob Yengel became councilman of the first ward and in 1881 the Chariton Street Railway Company was organized and Jacob was one of the ten men in the original organization. September 15, 1900 Fred and Bert purchased the store from their father and operated the market continuously until March 4, 1946 when it was sold to the Rhodes Brothers. So for 78 years the Yengel Market served this community on the South side of the Square. Helping in the market was Jake Yengel, son of Fred -- he was working there at the time of his untimely death in 1951. Many people yet today remember the bologna made in the market which they sold for 10 cents a ring or 3 rings for a quarter. Jacob Yengel born May 14, 1840 died August 21, 1916. Fred Jacob Yengel born December 4, 1872 died October 29, 1944. Bert Yengel born November 1, 1874 died January 19, 1949. Jake Yengel born August 9, 1896 died April 21, 1951." [Note: Also on p. 277 is a photo of the interior butcher shop showing carcuses hanging and meat cuts for sale, all lined up and stacked up on their counters in the butcher shops.
