This is according to a friend who was a professional on the staff of the West Los Angeles FHC, the largest LDS library outside of Salt Lake City. So it will be harder to get help interpreting old handwriting at the foreign desks in Salt Lake City, among other things. (I wonder who wil read and interpret all of those old foreign documents when they do the digitization?) Dave Werts

    2. This is good news for those of us who use the LDS records for family research. They are planning a massive undertaking to make all of their records available via internet ... free. It won't happen overnight, but it is exciting news. You can read about it at the following web address. http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,605153189,00.html Happy hunting, Jayne Mundell

    3. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, June 10, 1909 The Week Has Witnessed Many Changes in the Town and Country: The annual memorial exercises of Manchester Camp No. 140 Woodmen of the World and the Woodmen Circle will be held next Sunday, June 20th, at 2:30 p m. at the Chariton Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Schleh of Omaha will deliver the memorial address, and a good memorial program has been arranged. Everyone is invited to attend. * * * * * CLEM GITTINGER came up from Oklahoma, this week, to spend a few days with relatives, and from here goes to Champaign, Ill., where he will attend summer school at the University of Illinois and in the fall enter upon a course of civil engineering. He went to Oklahoma several years since and after graduating at Norman took the superintendency of the public schools in one of the new towns, but has decided to forego the pleasures of a pedagogic career. * * * * * MRS. W.W. WHITFIELD departed Sunday night for Beaver Falls, Penn., being called by the serious illness of her mother. She was accompanied by her son HAROLD, and daughter, MARION, and the length of their stay will depend upon the condition of her mother, but they will probably spend the greater part of the summer at that place. * * * * * M.B. COLGROVE was up from Washington Township, Friday and informed the Leader that his son, JAY COLEGROVE, who had been teaching in the schools at Great Falls, Mont., for the past had decided to return to Iowa, and has secured a position in the public schools at Cedar Rapids. MR. COLEGROVE is a good educator and is moving forward in his profession. He will visit the old home during the summer. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert September 10, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net 'A Closed Mouth Gathers No Foot'.

    3. Hi All: Well, I'm trying to squeeze 'every last drop' of information from the remaining newspaper articles that I have -- so there is much county news etc.. I haven't ordered another microfilm yet; we've been so busy here at home that I'm going to help finish some construction jobs we've started, before cold weather sets in.. Hopefully, David Niswender will be married and settled in his new home in Mississippi soon.. Congrats, David.. Nancee

    3. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, June 3, 1909 RAMBLINGS: "Congressman W.D. Jamieson, or should Fate lay its hands on him and remove him from the activities of life, it falls largely on you to keep us posted as I see the Chariton Herald is not going to permit Jamieson to have anything in his paper. I don't understand why some men persist in belittling Col. Hepburn by constantly parading the smallness of Jamieson. If Jamieson is the Liliputian that one editor in Chariton makes him out to be and beat Col. Hepburn by a majority of over 300 how much would have been the majority had a good man run against the Colonel? Some things humorously puzzle even Republicans sometimes." -- GEORGE PARKIN, Union Township ----------------------------------------------------------------- "Yes, we have got all our old ground planted to corn and are now plowing brush land and will continue to apply seed to the soil. Seed time and harvest is sure, so we plant all summer and harvest crops all winter." -- JOHN SCHNEBLEY ----------------------------------------------------------------- "We have an educated cat over at our house and it is interesting to see what intelligence a cat will develop. I don't spend much time in training him but I started to teach it just to amuse myself and now my curiosity is aroused. It will do many things by merely telling it to. I never knew before that cats were susceptable to "higher education." -- LEE E. EDGINGTON ------------------------------------------------------------------- "The majority of the people down our way are pretty well along with their planting and it is marvelous what farmers can do between showers. Warm weather is now essential owing to the lateness of the season to bring up and develop a corn crop." -- GEO. PARSONS, Washington Township ------------------------------------------------------------------ "I got hurt in a foolish way, a few days since. My old mare, which is as old as you are -- well, not quite, but up towards the 30s, was on the green and I concluded I would mount her with neither saddle nor bridle. This, I guess, make her think of her coltish days and so she ran away with me and threw me off. I am getting about well again." -- FRANK PENNINGTON, Otter Creek -------------------------------------------------------------------- "Forty seven years ago yesterday I commenced to drive stage for the western stage company. No military hero was prouder of his commission than I was of mine and had the Governor come down out of the State House I would not have considered an exchange of places with him." -- BEN BROCK ---------------------------------------------------------------------- "The people must be turning their attention to gardening. Last week I sold from my beds $108 worth of plants." -- NICHOLAS LEINEN ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert September 10, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net 'A Closed Mouth Gathers No Foot'.

    2. Richard Kinkead
    3. Fellow listers- I have given Volume One of Philip Currier's CURRIER Family Anthology to the Lucas County Genealogical Society. It will get there by Monday. The Iowa State Society has the full seven-volume set in Des Moines. I believe that all the Lucas County Curriers have moved on but there may be a few left in Warren County. Of course well-wizened Chariton residents may remember Charles Currier as the mayor of Chariton in 1929. His son Leslie Currier married my aunt Dorothy Kinkead. They're both buried in Chariton Cemetery now, she having lived to 101. Dick Kinkead Lantana, FL

    1. [IALUCAS] Melville - more info - marriages, death dates
    2. Hello Richard, [et al] Lucas Co., Marriages, [LCGS, p. 31] : Just noticed in reviewing the marriages of the Melville children that one of them married on the same day as a Curtis/Chance marriage. As mentioned previously, there's a link to Harriet Curtis, sister of Lot & Thomas Curtis, Jr. via Wm. B. Chance. So, the likelihood is that these families knew each other, hence the double wedding. :) An educated guess. :) Clarinda E. Curtis, 26, m. John M. 1. [IALUCAS] Andrew Melville, b. 1811, Scotland, OH, IND, MO
    2. Hello Richard, 1850 I see in the 1850 Census for New Durham, LaPorte Co., Indiana that Andrew had Real Estate valued at $2,000 and was m. to Rachel, b, abt 1816, Ohio. At that time they had John, 7; James, 4, and Sarah S, age 1. Also, living with them was "Jumette" {?], 80y, b. Scotland [as was Andrew who was 39y, Farmer, in 1850]. It is my assumption that Jumette is Andrew's mother. 1860 In the 1860 Census for Chariton Twp., Lucas Co., IA, Andrew is now 48, Farmer, b. Ohio [??] and wife is now Sarah, age 38 [b. abt 1822, Ohio]. Their children are: John, 17; James, 15; Sarah J., 11 [from marriage with Rachel?] and then Isabella, 7, b. Missouri; and Eva, 2, b. Iowa. It would appear then that Andrew immigrated from Scotland, migrated to Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Iowa with two wives ? along the way, Rachel, then Sarah. [A death date is needed for Rachel to determine who is mother of Isabella, b. MO. ] 1870 In the 1870 Census, Andrew is 58, b. Scotland, Farmer; and wf is Sarah, age 48, b. Ohio. The oldest child now is Isabella, 16, b. MO while the younger ones are all born Iowa: Eva, 12; Rhoda, 10; Nicholas, 7; and Hetty, 4. Living with them is a laborer named Andy Garrison, age 23, b. Iowa. Lucas Co. Cemetery Records, [LCGS, 1981edition] shows some Melville's buried at Chariton Cemetery, Section C: Row 9: #20 Chance, Sarah J. wf of William P. Aug 1, 1870 ag 21y 2m 11d #21 Melville, Emma R. Dau. of A. & S. Dec. 14, 1857 ag 1m 9d #23 & 24 -- Sarah and Andrew - as above. Sarah S. [1822-1909] and Andrew [1811-1875] In Section L of Chariton Cemetery, Row 18 N-S is a Melville Family Stone, then in Row 19 S-N are several Melville's: #1 Melville, N. S. [Nicholas], 1862-1910, Mason, IOOF, CVFD #2 Melville, Eliza 1867-1958 [assume these are parents of next ...] #3 Melville, Clarence C. 1893-1970 #4 Melville, Mary L. 1892-1970 #5 Melville, Calvin S. 1916-1940 Hope this information is helpful to anyone who might be researching this family line. 1. CHARITON IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION.

    3. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, July 8, 1909 A most worthy enterprise was launched in Chariton on last Monday evening when a number of the ladies met to confer with the city council as to the advisability of reorganizing the Chariton Improvement Association, and receiving the assurance of hearty co-operation from the mayor and members, which should extend as well to all public spirited citizens. The presidents and secretaries of the various clubs of Chariton met at the home of MRS. W.A. EIKENBERRY, on Tuesday, for the purpose of reorganizing the Association, the motion carrying to that effect. The officers elected were: President, MRS. LOU BEAMAN; 1st Vice President, MRS. NINA LARIMER; 2nd Vice President, MRS. MARCIA EIKENBERRY; 3rd Vice President, MRS. LUCY ISRAEL Secretary, MRS. EFFA BROWN; Treasurer, MISS ELOISE COPELAND. The former constitution was adopted with slight amendments to meet present conditions. After adjournment the general officers named four directors from each of the city wards and these general officers and directors will constitute the Executive Board. The Executive Board met yesterday to formulate plans to carry on the work and as the organization now exists under the amended constitution it is a woman's organization. The standing committees are to consist of three ladies each and are as follows: Public Health; Public Square; Park and Depot Grounds; Streets and Alleys; Municipal; Membership; Entertainments; Rest Room. The next regular meeting of the Association will be held on the first Thursday in August. Let the good work go on and the Leader congratulates the ladies in the enterprise shown and bespeaks a successful campaign for municipal progress. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert August 29, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net 'A Closed Mouth Gathers No Foot'.

    3. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, May 27, 1909 MISS HELENE SMITH, who is taking a course of instruction at Mercy Hospital, in Burlington and will soon graduate as a trained nurse, and who some time since was sent to assist in the hospital at Gary, Indiana, is back at her old place in Burlington, so her mother informs the Leader. She is in love with her work and this surely is a laudable ambition for there is no profession grander than that of alleviating the sufferings of human kind. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert August 29, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net 'A Closed Mouth Gathers No Foot'.

    3. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, May 27, 1909 SOCIETY EVENTS: MISS EVA ROBERTSON was pleasantly surprised, Tuesday evening, by her scholars. They presented her with a solid silver souvenir spoon as a remembrance of the event. The scholars of the eighth grade pleasantly surprised their teacher, MISS MAUD ABERNATHY, Tuesday evening. She was presented with a nice solid silver spoon as a token of their esteem. Refreshments were brought and served by the scholars. JOHN GOLTRY, of Russell, celebrated his 78th birthday yesterday. A number of his children, his brother, J.F. GOLTRY, and wife gathered at his home and did honor to the occasion. He was the recipient of many messages from members of the family at a distance and the day was enjoyed to the full extent. The "Seniors" gave an elaborate reception Friday evening, in the basement of the Presbyterian Church. A four-course dinner was served at six-thirty, by the ladies of the church to about sixty guests. The rooms were prettily decorated with their class colors, scarlet and black. After dinner various kinds of amusements and games made the evening one of social enjoyment to all. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert August 29, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net 'A Closed Mouth Gathers No Foot'.

    1. KILLED A WILD CAT AT NEWBERN.
    2. Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert
    3. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, May 20, 1909 Rev. E.R. BENNETT and CLEVELAND OTTO were fishing on the banks of Whitebreast recently and on returning home they met what they supposed to be a wild cat. MR. BENNETT threw a rock at the ferocious little animal killing it instantly, but the rock hit a tree and bounded back, striking MR. BENNETT on the head knocking him almost senseless. It made him think of the old adage killing two birds with one stone. The next day MR. BENNETT accompanied by AL ROSS and FRANK GARDNER, TOM NORRIS, CARL KIRTON and DAVE BRECKENRIDGE, went to the secluded spot, thinking they might find the den where the animal lived. The boys all had a curiosity to see the dead wild cat before making any further explorations, and to their astonishment DAVE BRECKENRIDGE at first sight recognized the cat as the old pet house cat that had been left with him by Major GREEN a few years ago. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert iggy29@rnetinc.net 'A Closed Mouth Gathers No Foot'.

    3. Does anyone here know what happened to my third cousin, Calvin S. Melville? He was a campus leader at Chariton HS, Class of 1933, then died in June of 1940. I find no indication that he, an only child and the last of his line, was involved in WW2. He's buried with his parents, Clarence and Mary Melville, who survived him, in Chariton Cemetery. Thanks in advance, Dick Kinkead Lantana, FL
