    1. DEATH OF CORDELIA WRIGHT
    2. Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert
    3. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, March 15, 1906 The many friends in Chariton and throughout the county are saddened by the news of the death of MISS CORDELIA WRIGHT, daughter of MR. and MRS. GEO. WRIGHT of Warren Township, which occurred at Boulder, Col., on Sunday night, March 11, 1906, after an illness of about sixteen months with consumption. She was taken ill while teaching at Malcolm, this State, and last fall, accompanied by relatives, she went to Boulder in the hope that the climate there would prove beneficial. But the fond hopes were not realized and on Sunday night she passed peacefully away. The remains were brought to Chariton yesterday, accompanied by her heartbroken parents and brother LUCIEN, and taken to the home of her uncle, LAUREL BOSS. Today at eleven o'clock, funeral services were held at May Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. F.B. Palmer of this city, after which interment took place at Derby. CORDELIA WRIGHT was born in Warren Township, this county, in January 1880, and grew to young womanhood there. She graduated from Drake University in Des Moines and later took a normal course at that institution. She was one of this county's most efficient and successful teachers, and one of our most highly esteemed young ladies. She possessed a sunny disposition and those traits of character which are always so much admired. She had been a member of the Baptist Church for many years and daily lived her Christian faith. She is survived by her parents, two brothers, LUCIEN and EUGENE WRIGHT, and one sister, MRS. NELLIE MILLER of Whitebreast Township. In their great grief these sorrowing ones have the sincere sympathy of the entire community. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert October 1, 2004 [email protected]

    1. DEATH OF JAMES H. HAYWORTH
    2. Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert
    3. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, March 8, 1906 JAMES H. HAYWORTH, who until recently resided on the Hammers place, north of Russell, committed suicide on Monday, by drinking carbolic acid. The particulars as the Leader gets them from Coronor Blanton is as follows: HAYWORTH is a man between 45 and 50 years of age. He has a wife and several small children. He was a poor man and for the past few years has been renting land and farming. Recently he leased the Spurling farm, southeast of town, and moved his family there, and had been engaged in moving his personal effects to his new location. At about 10:30 on Monday mornong he drove into town, presumably on his way to his former location for another load, and hitched his team, going into the Mettlin Drug Store. Several were in there and he seemed cheerful and laughed at some jocular remarks with the rest. In a short time he called for a dime's worth of carbolic acid and left the store and went directly to R.T. Huston's Livery barn. He was noticed by several as he passed into the pump room. G.M. Whittlesey was in the barn at the time and he with others noticed that something was wrong when he came out. He staggered and they caught him before he fell. He was taken into the office and there soon expired. It was found that he had poured about half the contents of the vial into a cup with water, which he drank. His family was immediately notified and soon arrived, but of course not before his life had gone out. Coronor T.P. Stanton, of this city, was notified and held an inquest over the remains. J.H. Cook, J.E. Plotts and W.L. Werts constituted the jury but after the examination of several witnesses, no cause for his act was developed. His wife says there was no domestic trouble whatever, that he was ever patient and devoted; that financially, while poor, they were getting along better than ever before. On his person he had a check for over $60 and $3 in money. Dr. Stanton suggests this theory; Mr. Hayworth was subject to chronic sick headaches and prior to these attacks there is apt to be a period of despondency. It may have been that he was on the verge of one of these attacks. This, together with the worry of moving over the rough roads with a poor team so affected his nerves that it was impossible for him to resist the impulse when it presented itself. The deceased was a good law abiding citizen and held in esteem by all who were acquainted with him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert October 1, 2004 [email protected]

    2. Hello Dick in Florida, et al: Thanks for the additonal info on the spouse's maiden names. In looking further, see that... 1. Arthur E. Gookin, 1896-1980, is buried next to his wf, Mary A. [Thomson], 1896-1967. [p. 266, Lucas Co. Cemetery Records: Chariton Cemtery, Division 4, North section, Row 7, #7]. That is a later birth date than the 1891 that I had previous... I think from a census where it states Arthur was b. Ohio and Thomson, Adams Twp., Muskingum Co., Ohio. 2. In my Kinship Report, James Delman Threlkeld is my "2nd cousin twice removed" ... so joins the Threlkeld's to the Gookin's. :-) This is what I have thus far for a developing Gookin line - more info would be appeciated. There are LOTS more Gookin's buried in Lucas Co., so I haven't connected them all or typed in all the info as yet. :-) 3. 1. UNREQUITED LOVE CAUSE OF TRIPLE TRAGEDY AT MOUNT PLEASANT.
    2. Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert
    3. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, March 1, 1906 Mount Pleasant, Iowa; Feb. 24. -- After forcing his way into the home of DR. O.B. ALLEN and killing MISS FLORENCE ALLEN and wounding MRS. ALLEN, ELDRIDGE BECKER, a rejected suitor of the young lady, rushed to his room and fired a rifle bullet into his brain, dying almost instantly. It is thought that he was crazed by his unrequited love. He was about 20 years old and his victim but 19. About 10:30 o'clock last night, MRS. ALLEN and MISS FLORENCE, who were in the sitting room of their home were frightened by the noise of someone endeavoring to force entrance through a side door. They started for the front door to make their getaway and summon aid. Just as they reached the exit MISS ALLEN was shot dead, falling across the threshold, and a second bullet grazed MRS. ALLEN's body. The assailant fled through the rear door and MRS. ALLEN, as soon as she recovered from her fear, hurriedly summoned neighbors. She had secured but a glimpse of the murderer and could give only a meager description. The officers in addition to a score of citizens immediately began search for the criminal. Suspicion was at once directed against BECKER. It was generally known that he had been "turned down" by MISS ALLEN and it was rumored that he had made threats. The officers soon went to the vacant house in the outskirts where he roomed and forcing entrance found him dead. He ! did not leave any note or explanation so far as known. The ALLEN and BECKER families are among the best known citizens. DR. ALLEN has resided here for years and MR. JACOB BECKER is a prominent farmer living three miles east of the city. MISS ALLEN was about 19 years old and a graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College. Recently she has been an instructor in Howe's Academy here. Young BECKER has been attending the academy for some time, staying in town during the winter months. MISS ALLEN and BECKER went together for a considerable length of time but some months ago she severed their relations. BECKER took his rejection bitterly and evidenced his sorrow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert September 30, 2004 [email protected]
