McChesney, age 94, of Wapello, Iowa, died Saturday afternoon, December 15, 2007, at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center. The daughter of Charles and Iva Calhoun Murray, she was born August 18, 1913 at Munden, Kansas. She and her family moved to Wapello in 1928. She married Carl McChesney on January 11, 1936 at Wapello. He preceded her in death on October 26, 1961. Alene graduated from Wapello High School in 1930. She received her teaching degree from Iowa State Teachers College in 1932. She received her bachelor's degree in 1964 from Iowa Wesleyan College. She was a fifth grade teacher for 30 years for the Wapello School District. She retired in 1978. Prior to teaching, she and her husband operated the Shell gas station and the HiWay Pantry in Wapello. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello, Chapter ET, P.E.O., Louisa County Retired Teachers Association, and a life member of the NEA. She loved playing bridge, flowers, watching and feeding birds, cooking, and reading. She is survived by her daughter, Donna Jean & Donald Williams of Wapello; her son, Michael Carl & Janet McChesney of Fairview, Texas; five grandchildren, Jennifer & Greg Rose, Amanda & Nick Brown, Keeley McChesney, Beth Belger, and Audra & Cameron Parker; four great-grandchildren, Riley, Lillian, Eleanor, and Corwin Michael Brown; and her sister, Ethel Askren of Wapello. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; an infant daughter, Judith Lee; a sister, Barbara Jordan; and a brother, Donald Murray. Alene will always be treasured as a loving mother and grandmother. The funeral ceremony for Alene McChesney will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, December 20, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church at Wapello, with Chaplain Dean Graber and Rev. James H. Huston officiating. Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m. A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Great River Hospice, the First Presbyterian Church at Wapello, and the Playground Equipment Fund for the L.J. Thompson Park at Wapello.
