The son of Dillon D. and Margaret 'Peg' Edmondson Schantz, he was born August 27, 1940 at Wapello. He married Karen Trier on December 28, 1962. John graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1958. H attended Mankato State University for one year where he played football. He worked in millwright with Local 2158 of Moline and was a carpenter with Local 1260 of Iowa City. Earlier he had farmed, operated the Shell Station at Wapello and as family owned and operated the Grandview Service and the Grandview Country Cafe. John was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Masons at Ainsworth and Washington, the KAABA Shrine at Washington, the I.O.O.F. at Wapello, the Crappie Masters, Crappie USA, Crappie Unlimited, CAST, and Pheasants Forever. He had been a little league coach, enjoyed auctions, hunting, woodworking, and playing cards. His life and activities were always centered about his family. He is survived by his wife, Karen; his mother, Margaret 'Peg' Schantz of Wapello; six children, a daughter, Cindy & Mike Singleton of Wapello, a son, Greg & Cathy Greiner of Wapello, a daughter, Jeanne & Rod Fry of Winterville, Georgia, a daughter, Chris Spate of Belvidere, Illinois, a daughter, Julie Rich of Columbia, Missouri, and a son, John, Jr. & JoEllen Schantz of Wapello; his sixteen grandchildren; a brother, Don & Mary Schantz of Ainsworth; and a sister, Judy & John Grover of Washington. He was preceded in death by his father. The funeral ceremony for John Schantz will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 1, 2007, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello, with Rev. Scott Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m.Friday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello where the family will meet friends from 6-8 p.m. Masonic services will be held at 5:45 p.m. by the Washington Lodge. A Memorial Fund has been established.
