He came to America at the age of sixteen, living in Ohio the first two years thereafter, but then coming to Iowa and settling in Oakland township which he ever afterwards made his home. In 1858 he was married to Elizabeth Lawrence. To this union five sons were born, all of whom are living. The wife died in 1869. In 1871 he was again married, his second wife being Elizabeth Hill. The two daughters born to them with their mother, survive their father. Interment at the Beauchamp Cemetery. He was in the second Iowa Cavalry in the Civil War.
