Reply to the message or author by clicking on the link below. *************************************************************************** MESSAGE: (#191915) Doris Elizabeth Shipman 1911-2007 <http://iagenweb.org/boards/louisa/obituaries/index.cgi?rev=191915> AUTHOR: volunteer DATE: 5/7/2008 at 11:29:33 Surnames: SHIPMAN,WYKERT,MOHLE,WHITAKER Doris Elizabeth Shipman, age 95, of Oakville, Iowa, died Monday afternoon, July 2, 2007, at her daughter's home, rural Burlington. The daughter of Fred and Mabel Wykert Mohlie, she was born July 16, 1911 at Bard, Iowa. She married Wesley C. Shipman on November 21, 1931 at Muscatine, Iowa. He preceded her in death on February 1, 1983. Doris attended a county school and then graduated from Wapello High School. She attended college at Ames for a year, studying home economics. She was a homemaker and enjoyed the family farm near Wapello and in 1936 moving to the farm near Oakville. She was an excellent seamstress and also was a great cook on the farm for the many helpers at times. She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Oakville and was a Charter Member of the WSCS which is now the UMW of the church. In her recent years because of macular degeneration, she listened to many books for the blind on tape. She is survived by her daughter Vernette & Richard Whitaker of Burlington; two sons, Wayne & Janet Lee Shipman of Oakville and Donn & Marylu Shipman of Blackwell, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wes; a son, Lester; and a brother, Raymond. The funeral ceremony for Doris Shipman will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, July 5, 2007, at the United Methodist Church at Oakville, with Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating. Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Oakville and then also for a luncheon and fellowship time at the Oakville Community Building following the burial. A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Books for the Blind and the Great River Hospice. Source: The Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.
