Friday, March 11, 1910, Page 1. John George Nearhood was born October 24, 1820, in county, Pennsylvania, and died March 7, 1910, at Wapello, aged 89 years, 4 months and 16 days. Union Iowa, Penn, and died March 7, 1910, at Wapello, Iowa, aged 89 years, four months and 16 days. He grew to manhood in the vicinity of his birth. When about twenty-two years of age he went to Bedford county, Penn., where on January 30, 1849, he was married to Jane Brown. Three children were born to them, all of whom died in infancy. He moved from Pennsylvania to Wapello, Iowa, in 1850. When he had been here two years his wife died, in 1852. Two years later, in 1854, he was married to Rachel Mitchell at Wapello, Iowa. Five children were born to them: Three, who died in infancy; Enos, who was killed on a train in Henry county in 1894, and Aner, of Wapello, Iowa, with whom he has made his home for quite a number of years, and who survives him. He has been a continuous resident of Wapello for sixty years, coming here when the life of the county still had its pioneer spirit. A cabinet maker by trade, having learned it in his early life, he worked in his shop in the employ of John Keck Sr., for a number of years, until the making of furniture by machinery took away the work of his trade in county seats. He then turned to carpentering and building and helped to build residences that are still occupied as homes in Wapello. Later, with the advance of his years, he followed such other employment as was convenient for him. His wife preceded him in death in 1902, having been an invalid for a number of years, several of which she was helpless. The present commodious residence was built by Aner Nearhood about twelve years ago to afford his mother more comforts than she had in the old home, still standing near. Aner, the youngest son, having remained with his parents, has for the last twenty-five years had full charge of the home and gave his father and mother faithful and affectionate care. Enos married Fannie Higgs of Wapello, Iowa, and three children were born to them, Maude, Daisy and Nora. Maude lived with her Grandpa Nearhood from the time she was eleven years old until her marriage to Nathan Thompson, Oct. 5, 1909, when she moved to Morning Sun. Daisy and Nora lived with their mother in Nebraska until her death in April, 1907, when they came to their grandfa-ther's to make their horne. These three granddaughters with Mrs. Ameila Fields, an adopted daughter, now of Monmouth, Ill., have been to him an affectionate member of the family and remain to mourn his loss. The funeral was held from the home Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. E. Newsom. Interment in the Wapello cemetery.
