Hammond <http://iagenweb.org/boards/louisa/obituaries/index.cgi?rev=225169> AUTHOR: David L. Skipto DATE: 3/5/2009 at 20:40:50 Surnames: HAMMOND,PADGETT,PETERS,WINDER,HUFF,DANIELS Wapello Republican, Thursday, February 12, 1931. Joseph R. Hammond passed away Monday evening at his home in this city, after a lingering illness. Joseph R. Hammond, son of Dennis B. and Hannah (Padgett) Hammond, was born in Washington County, Iowa, August 5, 1863, and passed away at his home in Wapello, Iowa, February 9, 1931, aged 67 years, 6 months and 4 days. His parents moved to a farm southeast of Columbus Junction when he was one year of age and he has since lived in Louisa County, except two years in Nebraska (1908 to 1909). On July 31, 1887, he was united in marriage with Ida A. Peters and to this union four sons and two daughters were born. He is survived by his life companion and the following children: Howard, of Hominy, Oklahoma; Nellie Winder, of Wapello; Leon, of El Paso, Texas; Raymond, of Westminster, Calif., and Gladys, of Wapello. He was preceded in death by one son, Joe Paul, who died about five years ago. Deceased is also survived by ten grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Albert, of Columbus Junction, Iowa; Mrs. Eliza Huff, of Perry, Iowa; Mrs. Viola Daniels, of Perry, Iowa; Ben, of Meservey, Iowa; Perry, of Diagoual, Iowa and many other relatives and friends. He was converted to Christ in early life and felt the call to the gospel ministry. He preached his first sermon when seventeen years of age and was more or less active in the work for fifty years. While living in Nebraska he found two pastorless churches. Mr. Hammond was an affectionate husband and father, was very industrious, and a good provider of the good things of this life for those who were dependent on him, and his benefactions extended outside the circles of his own home as others will bear testimony. He was also active in civic affairs,k being a member of the Iowa State Militia for a period of five years. He was also one of the organizers of the Farmers Union of Iowa and was its state lecturer for several years. Thus comes to a close an active life, and Mr. Hammond will be truly missed from the home and by a wide circle of neighbors and friends. Funeral services were held from the M.E. church in Wapello Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, preceded by a short service at the home. The service was conducted by Rev. Jesse Huddle, assisted by Rev. R.J. Arms. Burial was made in the Wapello Cemetery and the remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing friends. "Watching and Waiting" was sung by Mrs. Ernest Winter and Mrs. Fred Schwob, with Mrs. Warren Wiederrecht at the piano. "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Rock of Ages" was sung by a quartet, composed of Fred Wehmeyer, Warren Wiederrecht, Mrs. R.J. Arms and Josephine Barnes. The pallbearers were Henry Grouwinkel, George Maddux, Will Dayton, George Gauss, Ed Fisher and C.M. Donaldson. Mrs. G.W. Oaks, Mrs. Paul Huddle and Mrs. Charles Stroup were in charge of the flowers.
