Babbitt, age 85, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, died February 26, 1998, as a result of an automobile accident in Muscatine, Iowa. Ray O. Babbitt was born October 6, 1912, in rural Conesville, Iowa, the son of Lloyd Henry and Elsie (Westlake) Babbitt. He married Marjorie Werner on February 24, 1954 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She preceded him in death on February 19, 1996. Ray had been the groundskeeper at the Chautauqua Park in Columbus Junction and had also been a rural route mail carrier until his retirement. He was well known for his love of fishing. Ray was a member of the Columbus City Masonic Lodge #104 A.F. & A.M., the Davenport Consistory and Kaaba Shrine. Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Marvin (Letitia) Landes, Mt. Union, Iowa, three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one great-step-granddaughter. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Gene (Wanda) Lucas, Muscatine, and a special niece, Carla Salazar and her husband, Tom Salazar, Jr., Columbus City, Iowa. Additional special friends were Mitchell and Marion Allen, Heber Springs, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marjorie; two sisters and two brothers. Private funeral services were held March 2, at the Columbus City Cemetery, Columbus City, Iowa. Burial was in the Columbus City Cemetery.
