Skipto DATE: 2/21/2009 at 21:37:41 Surnames: BURKS,DEVORE,SKIPTON,PINE Mrs. Samuel Burks, one of the pioneers of this community, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs, Alex Pine, at 8:00 Sunday morning. Eliza Jane Devore, daughter of William and Elizabeth Massie Devore, was born in Cumberland County, Ohio, April 30, 1845. She was united in marriage to Joseph Skipton November 20, 1862 and several years later they came by steamboat to Muscatine and then to Louisa County which has since been her home. To this union four children were born, two of whom survive to mourn her death, Mrs. Alex Pine and Harvey H. Skipton, both of Columbus City. Two preceded her in death, William Skipton of Fredonia and Mrs. Laura Rickby of Washington State. Mr. Skipton died in February 1883. In 1890 she was united in marriage to Samuel Burks and to this union one daughter, Norma, was born who died July 1, 1908. Mr. Burks passed away December 15, 1936. Mrs. Burks united with the United Brethren church in early life. She was devoted to her home and was a kind and loving mother and will be greatly missed by a wide circle of friends. Besides the two children named above, she is survived by 21 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alex Pine, conducted by the Rev. C. S. Ramsdale. Pallbearers were: Raymond, Ralph, Herbert and William Pine and Cecil and Carl Skipton. Burial in the Indian Creek Cemetery.
