Farrie Gast, 80, of Grandview, long-time resident of Louisa County, died at Hershey Hospital in Muscatine at 2:10 a.m. Friday. Death resulted from complications, following an operation. Mr. Gast, son of Herman and Sarah Stineman Gast, was born a half mile east of Grandview Feb. 17, 1870. Much of his early boyhood was spent as a helper in his grandfather's grist mill. He attended the Grandview school and at the age of 15 began his career as a wage earner, but later completed his education at Brown's Business College at Muscatine, and became the owner and operator of a general store at Grandview. He married Margaret Kallenberger Jan. 6, 1898, at Grandview, and two years later the couple purchased a farm three miles east of Grandview, where he lived until his retirement. He was a member of the Brethrer Church. Surviving are his wife; four children, Dan Gast and Mae Gast and Mrs. Howard Cocklin, all of Grandview, and Floyd of Burbank, Calif.; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The body is at the Ross Dugeon Funeral Home in Wapello and will be taken to the family home in Grandview late Saturday afternoon. Funeral services will be conducted from the Grandview Community Church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery.
