Dear Dennis and List Members; Jan M. Banicki, 451 S. Phillipa Street, South Bend, Indiana 46619, is searching for information about LONGSHORE, LITSEY, PETERS and WILCOX families in Louisa County. I think she is just beginning on her genealogy search and can benefit from the experience and advice of any who share the same family lines that she does. Dennis, thank you for donating your LITSEY, WATTS, VANHORN and HELMICK genealogies to the Louis County Genealogical Society Heritage Center Library. They have already born fruit. Your information, Dennis, is far more complete than what I have found, so I am referring you to Jan and her to you. I made one interesting find that may add some information to what you have. In the Louisa County Recorder's office, in order to clarify title to land transactions, an early common practice was to solicit affidavits from individuals who had personally known the grantee or grantor in a particular transaction. Mary E. Selman, granddaughter of Anthony Litsey, made such a deposition on August 5, 1907. I present here all the information in the deposition in the order it was given (most of it) and hope it adds a few tidbits to what you have. These are the heirs of Anthony Litsey, who died 30 July 1959 in Louisa County, Iowa, and are named as of 1907 with the home locations given in some cases. 1. Mary E. Humiston, widow, of LaSalle, Illinois. 2. Harriet S. Allen, wife of Leonard Allen of Illinois. 3. Emeline E. Way, wife of Leonard Way of Defiance, Iowa. 4. Susan A. Smith, wife of James Smith of Orchard City, Washington. 5. Gertrude M. E. Wilcox (1846 -1920), wife of Henry Wilcox of Cairo. 6. Lunetta Marshall, also called Annetta, wife of John F. Marshall, of Cairo. 7. Sarah J. Helmick (the affiant), wife of William A. Helmick. 8. Laura A. Burns, wife of Lewis Burns of LaSalle, Illinois. Numbers 7 and 8 above were both deceased, and so their heirs are named. Sarah, #8, was born in 1831 and died 15 December 1882. Her husband, William A. Helmick, was born in 1818 and died on 10 December 1890. Children were: 1. Estella Helmick, wife of William H. Nellis of Missouri. 2. Mary E. Helmick, wife of George Selman of Columbus Junction. 3. Olive A. Helmick, wife of George Watts of Nebraska. 4. Josie M. Helmick, married a Bishop, now a widow from Cedar Falls. 5. Francis R. Helmick, married a McAvoy. She died circa 1880, but had a son, Frank P. McAvoy. 6. Henry A. Helmick, died circa 1880; his widow, Margaret E. Helmick is still living in Louisa County, as is her son, Glen Helmick. Glen married Olive (Unknown). Laura Helmick, # 8 above, was also deceased. Children of Laura and her husband Lewis Burns, of LaSalle, Illinois, are: 1. Luella Burns married Mack Hughes and lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. 2. Flora Burns married Philo Henry Head. 3. George burns lives at LaMoille, Illinois. OK, that is all from here at the moment.
