As before, if you want photocopies and a buck to cover copying and postage and I will send them to you snail mail, if I have your address. From the Columbus Gazette of January 20/27, 1999. J. M. Utterback, a well known resident of the Ainsworth community for many years, died at six o'clock Wednesday morning, January 12, at his home three-fourths of a mile east of Ainsworth, following a sudden heart attack. Joseph McNulty Utterback was born July 1,1859, in Indiana, a son of Benjamin Utterback and Narcissus (Powell) Utterrback. He came to Iowa when five years old and was reared in the Amboy community near Ainsworth, and lived there until 1880, when he moved to the present home. He was married May 27, 1880, at Ainsworth to Carrie Hunter, who died in 1904, and he was again married to Isa Gentzler at Columbus Junction, November 11, 1911. He had been a resident of this county for more than 75 years and lived on the farm where he died for about 64 years. He was a member of the Ainsworth Methodist church. He served on the police force at the Iowa state fair for 16 years. Surviving Mr. Utterback are his wife; one sister, Mrs. Leona Love of Central Point, Oregon; one brother, P. E. Utterback of Oskaloosa, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Utterback was a member of the Journal's Three-Quarter Century club, and on his application blank he wrote: "I was born in a log cabin at Elizaville, Indiana, and came to Iowa in a covered wagon in 1864. Though only five years old I remember several incidents of the trip. When crossing the river on the ferry at Port Louisa I was very much worried for fear some loose colts would fall off into the water, also one terrible storm that occurred during the trip." Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Ainsworh, Friday, January 14, and were conducted by the Rev. E. J. Shook of Delta, Iowa, assisted by the Rev. F. J. Robinson. A mixed quartet, the members of which were Dr. and Mrs. F. M. Mahin and Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Stephens sang two beautiful selections. Casket bearers were neighbors, John Clegg, John Rath, Ray Blankenhorn, Manford Rabenold, Frank Carson and Carl White. Interment in the Ainsworth cemetery. Mrs. Utterback plans to remain on the farm and will be glad to have friends call on her there. >From the Columbus Gazette of November 6, 1947. Mrs. Isa Elsie Utterback, widow of the late Joe H.(M) Utterback, of Ainsworth, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, November 1, 1947, at the Washington county hospital, where she had been a patient the past week. Mrs. Utterback it was thought was possibly injured early last week, when she opened a gate at their home near Ainsworth, for her sister, Miss Kate Gentzler, as the latter backed the car from their garage. She was taken to the Washington county hospital, where no serious injuries were found and circumstances indicated she suffered a stroke as she was opening the gate and fell. She seemed to be improving at the hospital until Friday, when complications developed and she died the following afternoon. Mrs. Utterback was the daughter of Reuben and Eliza Buffington Gentzler and was born at the family home near Columbus Junction, May 27, 1878. Later she moved to Columbus Junction and lived there until November 11, 1911, she was united in marriage to Joe Utterback, and they moved to a farm near Ainsworth which has since been her home. Mr. Utterback died January 12, 1944 and since his death she and her sister, Miss Kate Gentzler, have continued to make their home on the farm. Mrs. Utterback is survived by one sister, Miss Kate Gentzler, of Ainsworth and one brother, E. C. Gentzler of Columbus Junction. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist church at Ainsworth conducted by the Rev. Carl Steifel. Burial at Columbus City. Hope this gives documentation to you.
