Dear list, Research results on EMERY surname in Louisa County. Donald Hopkins, 1115 S. Reno, El Reno, OK 73036 requested information last February on an Emery/Emory family in Louisa County in 1860, as shown by the 1860 Federal Census. William Emery (born KY) and wife Sarah (born NY) had children: William, George, Jacob, Matilda, Samuel and Sarah. Some of the children later settled in Grundy County, Missouri. I could find nothing on this family in Louisa County records. There is another Emery family about which I did receive information, however. The Wapello Tribune for Friday, April 5, 1900 has an obituary for William W. Emery, born at Raunds, near London, England on February 11, 1828. His father died in a few years, and about 1848 he, his widowed mother and three sisters emigrated to the United Staes, locating at Ft. Madison, where the mother died of cholera in 1848. William Emery came to Wapello in 1851, and except for about 4 years in Moline, Illinois, has resided here ever since. This William W. Emery married (1) Elizabeth Ann Keller in Louisa County on June 12, 1855. William and Elizabeth had two children (1) Lola Emery, who married Charles Baldwin in Louisa County on December 26, 1879. In 1900 Lola was living in Salt Lake City, Utah. (2) William Emery, who has lived in Nevada for several years and is there in 1900 at the time of his father's death. Elizabeth died about 1864. William W. Emery married (2) Jennie E. Curtis, in 1868, and had three daughters. I identify them by numbers 3, 4, 5 below, continuing from his two children by Elizabeth. (3) Mabel Emery, who married Walter/Wm C. Oren/Orem December 19, 1894, in Louisa County and in 1900 was living in Salt Lake City, Utah. (4) Nellie Emery, born 14 November 1870 (probably in Louisa County); died 27 November 1885 and buried beside her father in the Wapello Cemetery. (5) Irene Emery, with no further information. I have not researched the censuses, and there are no probate records on his estate, although he seems to have died in Louisa County. I found an affidavit that there was no administration of his estate, and that the heirs had paid all the bills. The land entries for the Emery surname do not fully match the information above. Deed Record D, page 295, shows a William Emery, of Cedar County, buying lots in Blackhawk (later Toolesboro) on May 4, 1840, with other land transactions by a William Emery in 1846, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1856, 1857 etc. A Nancy Jane Emery, daughter of a William Emery, is married in Louisa County to an Isaac Nevil/Newell on March 3, 1859. The only previous query received by the Louisa County Genealogical Society on the Emery surname came in 1993 from Charlotte (Reasland) Marvin, then of 401 2nd Street North, Humboldt, IA 50548. Her informaion starts with an Emanuel Emery, born 1831 in Tennessee, died at Mt. Grove, Missouri, in 1918; married Mary J. Kelley, born 1830 in Indiana and who had a son, Lewis Emery, born in 1875, who married Leona Learn. I hope someone can make a connection and benefit from this. From Keith, not Connie.
