Dear Ed, Go directly west from Columbus Junction for about 8 miles, on Highway 92. The first town you come to is Cotter. Continuing west, you cross into Washington County and then cross Highway 218 (this intersection is called Ainsworth Junction) and the present town or village of Ainsworth, which used to be a railroad center, is about half a mile from the road junction. It lies both sides of an existing and still operating railroad track. I think there is one service station still operating there, maybe a hog buyer, feed and supply store, a restaurant or tavern, but it is a typical small Iowa town that had its heyday almost 100 years ago. I know of more than one family in the area, who lived in Louisa County, to go to Ainsworth for medical assistance and thus die in Washington County. This was before hospitals. Since Louisa County never had a hospital, Louisa County residents still die in the hospitals in neighboring counties. At one time Ainsworth had traveler accommodations, a train depot, blacksmith, undertaker, doctor, school, etc. Keith/Connie Street ckcasey@netins.net 325 Franklin Ave, Wapello, IA 52653-1515 319-523-8164 -----Original Message----- From: Ed Gentzler <gentzler@gte.net> To: IALOUISA-L@rootsweb.com <IALOUISA-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, August 15, 1999 2:26 PM Subject: Ainsworth--Where is/was it???? >This is a multi-part message in MIME format. >--------------E08555D2D3C841890EE844A6 >Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii >Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > >I've been trying locate the town of Ainsworth, but none of my atlases or >maps (new or old) show it.
