Schaffner, 97, of Mount Pleasant, died at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998, at Henry County Health Center. Born June 24, 1901, in Orange County, Texas, she was the daughter of Charles and Helen Ridgeway Hannah. She married Neil E. Schaffner on July 24, 1925, in Sac City. He died July 3, 1967. Mrs. Schaffner attended schools in Sac City and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. She was the first graduate of the School of Expressions at Horner Institute of Fine Arts in Kansas City. She taught school for one year before performing in chorus lines and acting in opera houses and theaters. After her marriage, she and her husband formed the “Toby and Susie” tent show and toured the United States. She retired in Mount Pleasant, but remained active with the Theater Museum and Jimmie Davis, who then owned the tour group and tent show. For her endeavors with theater, repertoire and education, she received an honorary doctorate from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1978. She was a member of the League for Preservation of American Theater, American Society for Theater Research, International Platform Association, and Dramatists Guild, Inc. She was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, Mass. Survivors include two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one son. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Friday in the lower level of the Theater Museum at Midwest Old Threshers in Mount Pleasant. The funeral for Mrs. Schaffner will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Theater Museum Building. Burial will be in Wapello Cemetery, Wapello. A memorial has been established for the Theater Museum.
