Ruth French, 80, 1021 S. 3rd St., died Monday at University Hospitals, Iowa City, following a 5-month illness. Services are Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Washington United Methodist Church. The Revs. Walter Phelps and Deborah Kiesey will officiate. Burial will be at the Elm Grove Cemetery. The family will meet with friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home. The former Eunice Ruth Ball was born June 18, 1907 at Wapello, a daughter of Alvah and Estella Deppy Ball. Her marriage to Clarence French took place May 21, 1930 at Washington. She had lived in Washington County for most of her life and was a resident of Washington for 47 years. She was educated in the Wapello schools and graduated from Wapello High School in 1926. She taught school for four years prior to her marriage and then worked at the Washington J. C. Penney Store for 21 years. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women of the church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Jean) Hyde, Washington; a granddaughter; and two brothers, Merle Ball, Wapello; and Glenn Ball, Meridian, Miss. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977, her parents, a granddaughter and a sister. Source: newspaper clipping with handwritten death date of December 7, 1987
