It is or was straight north of Columbus Junction. I found this map source on GEN-NEWBIE from Roots Web. Hi - We just spent a Saturday looking up cemetarys in Oakland township. Norma loaned us her cemetary book and Bill borrowed a plot book and we were off and running. Got to look in the Louisa County Historical Museum for a few moments - very impressed. One cemetary we looked at - Oakland Carpenter in Oakland township is in really bad shape. It's really overran with thorny berry bushes and small trees growing everywhere. Couldn't find a stone that we found 15 years ago - in fact couldn't find even half the stones that were on the list in the cemetary book. Is there any thought to restoring that cemetary like the Spring Run cemetary, Beuchamp cemetary and probably others were? I don't know who has restored those cemetaries or whose responsibility this would fall under - but I know we would be willing to help. I know this cemetary is actually in Des Moines County, but Hawkeye cemetary is in the process of being "restored". Some of the stones have been repaired and I would assume the rest will be, as well. Someone said the Apostolic church has undertaken restoration in exchange for use of the cemetary for burials. We were very impressed with the care being shown to Oakville pioneer burials. One question we have - In the cemetary book, there are 6 cemetaries listed in the front listing, including the Orono cemetary. In the Oakland section itself, Orono was not listed out. We could not find this cemetary anywhere. At the Wapello library, Orono was not in the WPA listings we found, either. We checked with several of the local residents in that section of the township and none of them knew anything about it. Does anyone know where it is or why it's not listed out in the cemetary book? Thanks, Nancy Wagner
Hi - I don't understand this web site - is this the one that was meant to be listed? All I get are topigraphical maps. Nancy: There is a beautiful 1895 map of Iowa on that website. It is very, very large and takes forever to load. But if one has the patience to wait and wait and wait some more until the Muscatine Line appears, you can see Port Allen listed at the very tip of the southwest corner of Muscatine County in the inner right angle bend of Louisa County's extension up along Muscatine County. This map is located at: http://fermi.jhuapl.edu/states/1895/ia_1895.jpg Norma William Wagner wrote: > Hi - I don't understand this web site - is this the one that was meant to be > listed?
