Dear Jim, Yes, there is a published index of the 1850 Louisa County, Iowa, Federal Census, available through the Iowa Genealogical Society. In Residence # 122 Family # 123, in Grandview Township, is Jesse L. Adams, age 42, a farmer, born in Ohio. His wife is Sarah, age 36, also born in Ohio. Other household members, presumed children, are William, age 20, born Indiana; Martin F., 13, born Illinois; Melissa J., 10, born Illinois; John F., 8, born Illinois; Catharine, 5, born Illinois; and Jesse L., age 2, born Iowa. In Residence # 2, Family # 2, in Grandview Township, is John F. Adams, age 52, farmer, born North Carolina. His wife is Rebecca, age 45, born North Carolina. Children in household are Abraham H., 21, born Indiana; Jesse S., 19, born Indiana; Amelia, 15, born Indiana; John Q., 10, born Iowa; Rebecca S., age 7, born Iowa. In Residence # 174, Family # 175, in Grandview Township, is Joshua Adams, age 30, day laborer, birth state unknown; his presumed wife, Sarah, age 18, born Ohio. In Residence #89, Family # 90, in James Neel household, in Grandview Township, is Joshua Adams, age 34, born in Virginia; presumed wife is Sarah, age 20, born Ohio. These are the only Adams families listed in the county in the 1850 Federal Census index. In Residence # 14, Family # 14 in Grandview Township is the only Sargent family listed in this census for Louisa County. Abraham Sargent is 30, a cooper, born in Indiana. Nancy E. is 28, born in Indiana; John T. is 6, born in Iowa; Reson T., age 5, born in Indiana; Mary C., 3, born in Indiana; Oliver C., 10/12, born in Indiana. A Luther C. Cotingham, cooper, born in Indiana is also listed in this household. Hope this helps. Keith, thank you very much. That is the SARGENT family I am researching, although as usual with this family, some of the information conflicts with other records. Reson is my wife's gr grandfather. If this census information is correct, Abraham & Nancy were married in Louisa Co. in 1841 and had their first child there in 1844. They then moved to Indiana for five years or so and had their next three children there. Then came back to Louisa Co. in time for the 1850 census. With this family this is very possible, they moved across the state of Oregon about six times between 1858 and 1880. The John Adams family is also the one that I was looking for, although I haven't made the connection yet. I think that they may have been Nancy's parents. If they are, they also ended up in Oregon in 1852. Are there any earlier records that might give a clue as to when these families first arrived in Louisa County? As with most questions answered, more questions are asked. Thank you again.
